Former Governor of Ogun State, Segun Osoba, on Tuesday, described the first 16 years after he left office as governor of the state as traumatic.

Osoba narrated that his successors, Gbenga Daniel, and Senator Ibikunle Amosun, made the state “hell” for him after leaving office in 2003.

The former governor spoke at the commissioning of a press centre built in the premises of the Governor’s Office in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, and named after him.

Narrating his experience immediately after he handed over to Daniel in 2003, Osoba said, he was declared persona non grata by the istration of Daniel, which he said prevented him from entering the state after his tenure.

Osoba said, “When I left office, I was so harassed to the point that all the plaques and the symbols of all the projects I did were the first to be removed throughout the state.

“The first 16 years of my leaving this office have been very, very traumatic. I never came back, I became a snake that doesn’t go back to where it has turned over its skin. This premises (Governor’s office) became a no-go area for me. To imagine that in my life, my return to this premises will be this glorious is something of emotion.

“The first eight years, I was virtually declared persona non grata in Ogun State, well, that is settled, those involved have come to apologise.

“My name was sent to EFCC so many times. The EFCC investigated, because everything was documented in files, they found nothing.

“I couldn’t come to Abeokuta not to talk of visiting the office of the Governor. The other eight years, that one, also became problematic.”

Osoba however expressed his joy for coming back to the Oke-Mosan Governor’s office after 16 years of leaving office.

He said, “Mr Governor, you will not know how many hours you have added to my life with this action today. It may be hours, weeks, days, or years, but you have added something very great to my life today.”

The governor however lauded the former governor for his contributions to the development of the state and the country.

Even the local government issue can be settled by federal judiciary if Buhari is serious. Fight against corruption is not serious and not straight forward. Governors banned open grazing to help end farmers herds en clashes but Buhari and his cabals nullified it. It is the job of the president to fix the country. The governors are only taking advantage of the president's stupidity.

A Professor of Mathematics from Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Prof AbdulAkeem Agboola has been accused of frustrating efforts made by the Academic staff Establishment Unit of the institution to investigate him for allegedly falsifying his age.

It was gathered that the Academic staff Establishment Unit’s periodic review discovered that Agboola did not submit his birth certificate, M.sc and Ph.D certificate to the school’s registry.

Findings however revealed that this prompted the unit to write Agboola in an internal memo, asking him to submit his missing credentials to its building.

The internal memo dated 13th April, 2021 which was obtained by our reporter gave Agboola till 16th April, 2021 to submit the missing documents.

It was however discovered that the Professor who replied the memo in another document sighted by this reporter described the memo by the school’s establishment unit as “highly embarrassing and worrisome.

Agboola explained in the memo that since he ed the University in 1994, he had participated in at least two staff auditing exercises where originals and photocopies of his certificates were submitted apart from his PhD certificate which he submitted in 2002.

The professor in his reply noted that all other documents were submitted in 1994 and all have since been in his personal file with his department, college and without any complain from the registry.

The academician however obliged the unit’s request by sending the requested certificates as sighted in a documents obtained by our reporter.

Agboola in the memo said, ” Your memo added April 13 2021 referenced FUNAAB /R/ASP.467/1/207 on the subject is referred.

“It is highly embarrassing and worrisome for me to be written that I did not submit my birth certificate to the registry. Apart from my PhD certificate which was submitted in 2002, all my other credentials were submitted in 1994 and they have since been inside my personal file in the department, college and without any complain from the registry.

“I hope someone somewhere is not tempering and playing foul with my personal file in the registry.

“Consequent on your request I hereby resubmitted photocopies of following documents to the registry, birth certificate, M.Sc and PhD certificate”

The Establishment Unit in its response in another internal memorandum dated 26th April, 2021 and sighted by this reporter however said Agboola’s response to its former memo was “incorrect and needless”.

The unit stressed that Agboola submitted a “To whom it may concern letter” as evidence for the completion of his M.sc when he was employed as an assistant lecturer in 1994.

The unit also noted that Agboola never submitted a doctoral certificate and birth certificate.

Agboola was asked to submit any contrary evidence to the claim by the unit.

The Unit noted that after a quick review of the submitted credentials, it discovered a lot of inconsistency in the names on the birth certificate to his doctoral certificate, calling for an explanation from Agboola.

The Unit said it also observed that the name on the birth certificate is not in tandem with 60th birthday celebration the Professor had in public place.

The Professor was however asked to forward explanation for the inconsistency on the name on the credentials submitted to the Establishment Unit’s building not later than April 29, 2021.

The Memo partly read “that the university registry in it’s periodic review, requests for any documents found missing in individual files of staff.

“You are expected to forward the explanation for the inconsistencies in the name on your credentials to the academic staff establishment unit not later than Thursday April 29,2021”.

Lagos and Ogun States have launched a t development commission, which is geared towards fast-tracking infrastructure development and smoothening areas of cooperation between both states, especially in border communities.

Lagos Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Ogun Governor Dapo Abiodun announced the development on their respective social media pages.

Lagos and Ogun for a chunk of Nigeria's factories and businesses. Most folks who reside in Ogun, earn a living in Lagos--Nigeria's commercial capital.

However, road infrastructure linking both southwest states has been left to crumble and rot through the years and there has been little, if any cooperation, between governments in both states.

Past governors of both states have also bickered over who should collect taxes from folks who reside in Ogun but work in Lagos.

"Let's hope this leads to an upgrade of the infrastructure in those neglected towns like Akute, Mowe, Iju, Ishaga, Ọta, Agbára, etc, on the boundaries of both states," says journalist Nicholas Ibekwe

The Ogun State Government says it has extended the ban to the sale of all cooling system servicing and repair of air-conditioning and refrigerating units across the state until further notice.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, Ola Oresanya, disclosed this in a statement on Sunday.

The government had last week Friday announced the ban on the sale and repair of industrial gas after five explosions hit some parts in Abeokuta.

Explaining the extension of the ban to cooling gas, Oresanya said it was to allow for proper investigation into recent gas explosions in the state.

He added that the explosion arose from sources suspected to have engaged in the adulteration of these combustible products, which has led to the loss of lives.

The statement read in part, “Technicians who specialise in the repairs and servicing of these cooling systems, and dealers on the affected gas types, are directed to adhere strictly to this ban in their own interest and that of the public.

“With the recent incidence of gas explosions in Ogun state, the State government in its bid to ensure that no further lives are lost through similar circumstances, or any other avoidable circumstance whatsoever is placing a ban on all cooling systems related gas sales, purchase and use, until further notice. Compliance is not optional.”

Oresanya called on all dealers, retailers, and technicians in the combustible products to comply immediately with the ban as the state government will clamp down on any outlet or individual that flouts the order.

The Ogun government has temporarily banned the sale of industrial gas following recent explosions in the state.

Two persons were reportedly injured on Friday morning as a gas explosion occurred at Onikoko area of Abeokuta, the Ogun capital.

On Thursday, a gas explosion occurred at the Olusegun Obasanjo presidential library (OOPL) in Abeokuta, killing one person.

Less than than 48 hours before the OOPL incident, a gas explosion rocked the Conference Hotel opposite the library, claiming two lives.

On May 12, three people, including an infant, were killed, while others sustained injuries, following a gas explosion that occurred in another area of the state capital.

Speaking during a stakeholders meeting in Abeokuta on Friday, Femi Ogunbanwo, the state commissioner for special duties and intergovernmental affairs, said all major stakeholders in the gas sector are expected to abide by the directive.

“Anyone found guilty of selling adulterated gas products or violating safety protocols would have the full weight of the law to contend with,” he added.

He added that Dapo Abiodun, the state governor, has been in consultations with the federal authorities, relevant agencies, and the police to investigate and bring to book whoever is found guilty of sharp practices or negligence that could cause further occurrence.

Also speaking, Ola Oresanya, special adviser to the governor on environment, described the incidents as an ugly development which must be nipped in the bud.

Earlier, a team consisting of Ogunbanwo, Oresanya, Rasaki Ojetola, permanent secretary, ministry of environment, and other government officials had visited different sites of the explosions and some gas plant outlets.

During the visits, two plants in Omida and Idi-Ori in Abeokuta metropolis were sealed off.

A gas explosion on Tuesday ruptured the calm at the Conference Hotel on Presidential Boulevard, Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital, killing a technician and another yet-to-be identified person.

The explosion, which occurred around noon time, left three others with varying degrees of injuries.

The hotel sited opposite the sprawling Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL), is owned by former Governor Gbenga Daniel.

The injured are receiving treatment in a hospital.

Reacting, the hotel facility manager, Engr. Tunde Osinubi, confirmed the incident, saying it was greatly regretted.

Osinubu, in a statement, attributed the cause of the explosion at the Conference Hotel to “fake gas cylinder.”

He said: “A routine maintenance of the automatic revolving door at the entrance of hotel reception, which involved the use of oxyacetylene gas to weld the door hinges, was being carried out.

“The Oxyacetylene gas cylinder suddenly exploded, killing the technician and one other person yet to be identified.

“Three other people were injured and were immediately taken to the hospital. They are responding to treatment.

“So far no sabotage is suspected. It is however suspected that the gas cylinder purchased at the open market may be fake and unable to withstand gas pressure.

“The incidence of Gas explosions as a result of fake cylinders being sold has become worrisome and of great concern as similar incidents have been reported in several locations in Abeokuta recently with casualties.

“The management of the hotel sympathizes with the families and friends of the deceased and wishes to warn the general public of the presence of fake gas cylinders in the market.

“This incidence is however greatly regretted.”
