Humor is subjective. So what makes one person laugh can make another hiss.
Some have mentioned Brain Jotter as a boring comedian, but I've found his skits I've seen quite entertaining, though usually too long.

This post will be quite long, as we want to be detailed.

After 10 years online and 10,000 posts, we are selling our website, http://nalaugh.com. It has been a long road, and we hope to transition the website to a new owner.

We are posting it here, as we have also been part of the Nairaland community since it launched in 2005, and even started some trends that can still be seen in posts on Nairaland today. Background/overview:

Na Laugh is a website which publishes Nigerian (and other African) comedy content. Skits, jokes, stand-up etc. We launched in December, 2012. At the time, there were very few Nigerian websites dedicated solely to Nigerian comedy, so we decided to fill the void.

The site grew steadily since then, and at its peak (2017-2019), it received 1-3 million page views a month. That number has dwindled for several reasons that will be covered. Thousands of comedians have sent in their content to be published on the site over the years. Many of them, like Mark Angel Comedy have now grown to become household names. Na Laugh still ranks on the first page of Google for most Mark Angel related searches, for this reason. We never charged a dime to publish anyone's comedy, in all 10 years.

The site holds sentimental value to us, because since we don't live in Nigeria, one of the motivations to create it was to stay in touch with Nigerian comedy. We enjoyed publishing all 10,000 posts.

Why the sale?
There are several reasons:

1. Time: While we love the site, we are involved in several other projects and realize it might be time to it on to a new owner who can give it the boost it needs.

2. Google Adsense: Since most of our s over the years consistently expressed a preference for ing videos, instead of streaming them, issues developed with Adsense. While we only provided s for more popular content like Mark Angel Comedy, this resulted in irreversible issues with Google Adsense. Therefore, this site is no longer eligible for Adsense monetization. The site is not penalized on Google search or anything else. A new owner can use several other monetization options. As well as selling direct ads. Same way Nairaland transitioned from Google Adsense to direct ads in the past.

Site Assets:

Facebook Page: The site has a FB page with over 16,000 followers.
YouTube Channel: The site has a YT channel with about 10,000 subscribers.
IG page: The site has an IG page with over 500 followers. We never focused on IG.
Android App: The site has an android app, however, we are decommissioning it.

Site functionality and potential:

1. Videos can be ed directly to the site, as well as links from YouTube and similar sites.
2. The site has a comedian profile section which gives a brief overview of popular comedians, as well as their content on the site.
3. For a new owner, one potential game changer that could be added to the site would be a comedian booking section, with a commission structure. This could generate significant revenue, in the right hands. We simply no longer have the time to explore this possibility.

Site content:
Approximately 9000 posts are video content, in the categories of Skits, Animation and stand-up comedy. Approximately 1000 posts are jokes and memes.

Traffic:
Owing to less frequent posting (lack of time), the traffic has declined. However, a new owner can revive the traffic by posting frequently. The site still consistently gets 50,000-100,000 page views a month, from Nigeria and numerous countries.

Monetization:
Over the years, the site had three main monetization methods:

1. Adsense: It was monetized with adsense from 2013 to Feb, 2021. Averaged $200-300/mth.

2. Direct Ads: We sold direct ad spots to businesses who ed us to on the site. Ad spots usually sold at $50-100/mth each. Brands like 1XBet, fashion brands etc us to buy ad spots on the site.

3. Sponsored content: We sold spots for sponsored content. $70-$100 one-time charge.
note: We never charged any comedian to publish their content. Sponsored content were expressly requested by the r as a link presented in a permanent post format.

The site has several monetization potentials, though we never focused heavily on monetization, as it was more of a hobby project than a source of income. In the right hands, it can be a good source of income in Nigeria.

1. Free hosting for 3 months, while you transition to your own hosting. Can be longer, if necessary.
2. Prompt professional communication and transition to help you succeed with the new endeavor.
3. Training on how to manage the site, which is built on Wordpress.
4. Transfer of social media s.

Quick update for April.

We made it into a popular accelerator recently. Getting some cash and mentoring as a result.

Getting some good inbound requests and conversations and our pivot back to B2C is making sense.

Increased my team size and doubled my burn. Runway is short <6 months but we have faith that we are on to something.

Fun times ahead. We will prevail!
