In recent times, there has been a steady rise in migration of Nigerians to other countries, not just in popular countries like the US, the UK, and Canada alone, but across the world. As of 2024, there are approximately 17 million Nigerians living abroad, according to the International Organization of Migration. This significant trend has expanded the market for Nigerian products. For instance, in the year leading up to June 2023, Nigeria’s exports to the Uk reached £3.3 billion, an increase of £1.4 billion from the previous year. This creates a growing market opportunity in the diaspora that small businesses can’t afford to ignore and shows an increasing need for authentic local products in foreign markets. Exploring this market offers huge opportunities for growth and global recognition for your business.
One important advantage of selling to the diaspora market is the current demand for familiarity and connection. Nigerians abroad often seek products that remind them of home, they also like to introduce their foreign friends to their culture, hence, products ranging from traditional foods and spices to handcrafted items and cultural attire are in high demand. By providing these products, businesses can establish a loyal customer base eager to purchase local and authentic goods.
One other benefit is the potential for pricing. Customers abroad are often willing and ready to pay a higher price for these high-quality items from Africa that are usually difficult to source for overseas. This creates an opportunity for small businesses like yours to increase profit margins while delivering value to their customers. This makes it a win-win for both parties; Buyers and Sellers respectively.
In trying to reach these markets and sell to a global audience, the rise of e-commerce platforms has made it much easier than ever for small businesses. According to recent data, global ecommerce sales were estimated to be around $6.3 trillion in 2023 and are projected to reach $8.1 trillion by 2026, with significant growth expected year-over-year as online shopping continues to rise across the globe. Therefore, platforms like Ojah.shop which connect vendors to an existing ready-to-buy global audience, offering features like international shipping, product listings, and prompt customer , are the best option for small and established businesses to leverage. Ojah.shop eliminates many of the challenges traditionally associated with exporting, in of logistics and receiving payment.
Lastly, tapping into the diaspora market through Ojah.shop encourages cultural exchange and strengthens the connection between Nigerians at home and abroad. It also opens up the Nigerian and African markets to a global audience, by granting its vendors access to sell to over 100+ countries.

The global market is a goldmine for every small business. In 2025, trying to expand your local Nigerian business into global markets involves a mix of a thorough strategic plan and the ability to leverage modern tools and platforms. Over the years, particularly since the COVID lockdown year, there has been an increase in people’s trust in e-commerce companies has led to a surge in online shopping. With over 2.77 billion people around the globe making online purchases from dedicated e-commerce platforms like Amazon, Temu, Etsy, Jumia, and Ojah.shop. This shows they process millions of orders daily from customers, significantly reducing the need for visits to physical stores globally. As a business owner, you can tap into these, and here are five practical steps to take your business to the next level.

1. Understand Your Target Market

For a business owner, one important step is to do research before exploring international markets. With over 33% of the world's population shopping online, e-commerce is now a $6.8 trillion industry and will reach the $8 trillion mark by 2027. It is essential to identify countries, cities, and people in demand for your products. As a Nigerian, if you produce local authentic products, then you’ll need to pay special attention to countries like the UK, the US, and Canada where many Nigerians often migrate. Within the last two years alone, over 3.6 million Nigerians have migrated out of the country. Take note and study the consumer preferences, the legal requirements for your products, and cultural differences to tailor your offers effectively.

2. Leverage E-Commerce Platforms

After understanding your target market, the next question on your mind is how can you reach these potential customers, ready to buy your products. The easiest way is by leveraging existing online marketplaces like Amazon, Jumia, Temu, and Ojah.shop. These platforms can connect you to a global audience. According to Statista, in 2024 alone, retail e-commerce sales were estimated to exceed 4.1 trillion U.S. dollars worldwide, with this figure expected to reach new heights in the coming years.

As a Nigerian, Ojah.shop stands out because of its focus on connecting small business owners with global buyers seeking authentic local products. Ojah offers seamless shipping with integrations with top shipping providers and fast payments to your local bank through its parent payment company Payshiga. All you need to do is sign up on Ojah.shop, list your products, and let Ojah.shop handle the heavy lifting while you focus on growing your business.

3. Streamline Your Logistics

As a small business owner trying to expand your business abroad, you need to be efficient with your shipping and delivery systems. They are very important in your success globally. Partnering with reliable international logistics companies ensures timely and cost-effective delivery to your customers. However, negotiating deals with these logistics companies can be challenging. Instead, you can partner with Ojah.shop, which boasts reliable shipping networks with insurance-backed services to safeguard your deliveries.

4. Work on Your Branding and Marketing

The global market is very competitive, so a unique brand identity is essential to stand out. Use aggressive social media campaigns and create influencer partnerships with community leaders in the diaspora to build awareness and trust. The Nigerian heritage of your business can be highlighted as a unique selling point to your potential customers.

5. Be ready to comply with International Regulations

To ensure smooth operations for your business, you’ll need to understand international trade laws, tariffs, and the necessary documentation required for exports. Hiring trade consultants, or you attending export-focused webinars can guide you in navigating these requirements.

The steps highlighted in the paragraphs above, if followed diligently, can guarantee a positive shift in your business growth, whether you operate in Nigeria or elsewhere. With strategic planning and leveraging the right tools like Ojah.shop, the global market is within reach for you.

Speaking about leveraging the right platforms and getting information, the team at Ojah will be hosting a webinar on the 28th of January, 2025, just a few days away. AliExpress, a China-based B2B platform, offers a wide range of Chinese products to buyers worldwide. In this step-by-step guide, we'll show you how to make purchases on AliExpress from Nigeria, using the Cardify virtual Mastercard (funded with NGN or USDT), and share valuable hints for a successful shopping experience.

Basic Things to Do First
a. AliExpress Mobile App and : Begin by ing the AliExpress mobile app and ing your . Set your shipping address, but you can edit it at the checkout page if needed.
b. Change your currency to usd in the currency tab on the right hand corner as the conversion rate when in NGN can be deceptive. Search for Your Desired Item: Use the search box to type in your desired item.
c. Explore Search Results: Explore the search results, considering factors like price, sellers' ratings, , and offers. Reading item descriptions thoroughly is crucial. Opt for sellers with ratings of 4.5 and above for a reliable experience.
d. Proceed to Payment: Once you've identified your chosen seller and item, proceed to payment. This often times is the biggest challenge with respect to shopping on Aliexpress from Nigeria, but with startups like Cardify Africa, it is becoming increasingly easier to pay with a virtual dollar card. Below is a step by step guide on the processes i went through.

Step 1

I started by ing the Cardify Africa mobile app from the Play Store. After installation, i followed the registration process and verified my to level 2. This verification level is necessary to create a virtual Mastercard, although level 1 verification still affords you the ability to do other things like paying bills with NGN and USDT on the system.

Step 2

Once my got verified, i realised that i have the option to create and fund a Dollar Card with either the Naira wallet or Usd wallet on the system, as i have some USDT, i opted to fund my USD wallet by clicking on deposit and sending USDT to the generated wallet, the fund reflected in my USD wallet immediately i did that. I then proceeded to click cards and "Get New Virtual Card", over here i saw a list of options but chose my USDT wallet since that is the only wallet i have funded, note: of you have funded your NGN wallet, you can easily choose NGN wallet at this point.

Step 3

Now that your Cardify Dollar Card is loaded with USDT or NGN (Note: there are cases where it takes sometime to have the card reflect the new balance, so you might have to be patient in such cases), head over to AliExpress and search for the product you wish to buy. In my case, it was a 50000mAh Power Bank 20W PD 3.0 Two-way Fast Charging desk lamp Powerbank. To save on shipping costs, filter the results to display items with free shipping. Once you've made your selection, proceed to the checkout, fill in your address and click add payment option. Proceed to your Cardify app and click on the card you have created and funded then click on View card and input your 4 digits pin to view the card details, enter the card details in the fields provided on AliExpress and click proceed.

You can check the full video of How To Buy Things On AliExpress From Nigeria here :https://youtu.be/7-1-SxNSQjo

Viola! order complete. As i await the arrival of my power bank, here are three compelling reasons why I rate Cardify above other virtual dollar card providers:
1. Direct Funding with USDT and NGN options:
Cardify's unique feature allows you to fund your virtual card directly with USDT, streamlining international transactions without the need for traditional banks or currency conversion.

2. -Friendly App:
The Cardify app is -friendly, making the entire process from registration to card funding and usage straightforward and accessible even for those with limited tech experience.

3. Responsive :
In my experience, Cardify's customer was impressive. They promptly addressed my concerns and kept me informed about system status, ensuring a smooth experience.

I have about $4 left on my dollar card.

I learnt www.chippercash.com is a good alternative. Nevertheless, I am really gutted.
