Onaiyekan condemns pardon for Alamieyeseigha, Bulama
THE presidential pardon granted former Bayelsa State governor, Depreiye Alamieyeseigha, may never go down well with most Nigerians as more high profile figures have condemned it.

The latest condemnation came from the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, in his Easter message.

Onaiyekan, troubled by the pardon - like many Nigerians since the news of it broke - dedicated his Easter message to condemning it.

President Goodluck Jonathan drew local and international anger after he granted state pardon to his former boss, Alamieyeseigha. The former governor, wanted in the United Kingdom for money laundering and convicted in Nigeria for embezzling state funds while he was in office, was pardoned alongside another convict and former head of the Bank of the North, Shettima Bulama.

Bulama, like Alamieyeisegha, was investigated and later prosecuted for corruption by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for crimes committed as head of a Nigerian bank.

While many Nigerians have described it as the worst setback to the fight against corruption in the country, the controversial pardon sparked diplomatic row between Nigeria and the United States, with the Americans threatening to punish Nigeria over Jonathan’s action.

The president also drew public anger for the pardon of a former army major, Bello Magaji, a homosexual rapist whom the Supreme Court jailed for five years for serially sodomising four teenage boys.

Onaiyekan, who spoke to Times, an on-line publication, said the pardon is a “case where moral issues is at stake, where people are condemned or liable to be condemned for breaking the law and going against moral norms.”

According to the cleric, Alamieyeisegha and Bulama, and others ‘unjustly’ pardoned, ought to have shown some form of public repentance “which should be clear to everyone.”

“Furthermore, a sincere effort must be made to pay back as much as possible of what has been stolen. That money belongs to the Nigerian people and it must be given back to them (as a precondition for the pardon),” he added.

The Cardinal advised the government not to forget that the issue of massive corruption in high places is of major concern to Nigerians who are fast losing confidence in the sincerity of government to turn the tide.

“Pardon for high profile corruption cases will certainly reduce further whatever is left of the confidence of the people. This has serious political and social fall-out that government cannot afford to ignore.

“We must tell the truth that anger is mounting in the land, especially among the youth whose patience is running out. The clock of social tension is dangerously ticking towards explosion. The nation is in danger. What is needed are clear and visible gestures of reassurance that a real change and genuine transformation for the better has started,” he said.

Boko Haram should be granted amnesty if they repent – Onaiyekan
Catholic Archbishop, Cardinal John Onaiyekan, yesterday, backed the call by the Sultan of Sokoto for the granting of amnesty to of the Boko Haram sect, as a means of achieving peace in the north.

However, before the pardon, the clergy wants of the sect to seek repentance for the large number of persons and property they have destroyed without any justification.

Cardinal Onaiyekan, who stated this in his Easter massage, noted that although government had power to give state pardon to criminals, it must be done with caution.

According to the Cardinal, the sect must seek forgiveness and repentance, so that it would not appear as if the had done the right thing and were being persuaded to seek pardon from the government.

He said, “as regards the case of an offer of amnesty to the Boko Haram, I believe that we should not throw away outright the consideration of such amnesty. Faced with an intractable problem, we have to explore all possible avenues of solution. The security response in of arms, gadgets and trained personnel is useful and necessary, but obviously not enough on its own.

“Government does well to reach out to all political forces and currents, so that the nation can be on the same political page and tly address this common menace, which terrorism is.

“Under such an atmosphere of common efforts, the call for amnesty would seem to me quite appropriate and even necessary. I therefore see the call of the Sultan as an invitation to further discussion and dialogue among Nigerians to sharpen the focus of government action in this matter.

“That discussion has started, for which we should thank the Sultan and his courageous proposal. In every conflict, a time comes when dialogue and talking must be brought into the equation, in view of final solution.

“But before the Boko Haram can be seriously considered for amnesty, they must meet the two conditions mentioned earlier for forgiveness, namely repentance and amendment. Before they are eligible for any amnesty, they must at least it that they were wrong to be killing innocent people, whatever may have been their grievances. If this is not done, they could well continue to feel that they did the right thing and perhaps, it is the rest of us who ought to beg them for pardon.”

The Archbishop urged the government to address the growing problems of poverty and unemployment and promote good governance so as to give the people justifiable reasons for electing them into the office they are occupying.

Govt should address poverty, unemployment

“We have to find ways of getting ourselves out of the tight grip of these two evils (insecurity and massive corruption). It will require not only legal approach but also wise political moves and quiet diplomatic efforts as well as the input from the spiritual leadership of the country.

“This means that the problem of Nigeria is the problem of all of us and we must find a way of putting our heads together to change our ways of doing things so that a great nation can emerge.

THE Ekiti State Police Command Tuesday quizzed the state’s Chairman of Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN), Olajide Awe, over the murder of Mr. Ayodele Jeje at Erinjiyan Ekiti in Ekiti-West local Council Area at the weekend.

Jeje, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), was shot dead in Erinjiyan Ekiti, Awe’s town, at the weekend while one Mrs. Julianah Adewumi and Gbenga Adewumi were also shot by unknown gunmen while attending a PDP meeting in the town.

The PDP alleged that Awe, who was a high chief in the community, led some ACN thugs to disrupt the meeting, which was summoned in preparation to receive some ACN that were decamping to the PDP. However, the ACN leader in the state denied the allegation, saying that the killing was a result of internal crisis in the PDP.

The state Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Victor Babayemi, confirmed that Awe was quizzed to explain his alleged involvement in the murder. According to him, “Mr. Jide Awe was invited for fact finding in respect of the killing in Erinjiyan Ekiti at the weekend.”

Meanwhile, Ekiti PDP Chairman, Mr. Makanjuola Ogundipe, told a press conference yesterday that the statement credited to Awe to the effect that the murder was caused by internal crisis in the PDP was diversionary and criminal.

Ogundipe said it was unfortunate for the ACN chairman to deny the killing even when the victims could recognise him vividly among the hoodlums that attacked the community, leading to the death of one person and injury to many others.

Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi has berated the former governor of the state Senator Chris Ngige over Ngige’s poor rating of Obi’s performance.

The governor was reacting to the recent statement by Senator Ngige that Obi’s istration scored seven percent of the expected Anambra State development in his seven years istration in the state.

Senator Ngige representing Anambra Central Senatorial Zone, in an apparent attempt to justify his ambition to return to Anambra State Government House, said that he recorded 20 percent achievement in his three years as governor, while Governor Peter Obi recorded seven percent in his seven years of leadership of the state, leaving 70 percent of expected development of the state.

He said, “Circumstances are compelling me to run for Anambra governorship election because I came to Government House with a blueprint and I was able to do 20 percent. Another Governor came in and did just seven percent in seven years and I want to ask who is going to do the remaining 70 per cent.” Dr. Ngige released the scorecard during a media briefing and distribution of gifts to his constituents.

Replying to Ngige’s performance rating through his Commissioner for Information and Culture, Chief Joemartins Uzodike, Governor Obi said Ngige’s statement was laughable.

According to the statement signed by the Information Commissioner, “What Ngige’s score card revealed, is a total lack of national thinking and deepened sense of appreciation of magnitude and quantum of monuments, which is staring everybody in the face, including the blind in all parts of the state.

“For three years Ngige istration scored zero in education, zero in health, zero in water supply and all other fundamental indices of development.”

“For such a person to stand up and claim to have scored 20 percent simply because one or two roads were hurriedly put in place around his community apparently due to pressure of removal and fear of further abduction all predicated on unfulfilled promises and illegal pre-election deals and agreement is to say the least, most unpatriotic and quite instructive of the type of leadership some desperados offer and still want to offer Anambra people.”

Governor Obi advised Senator Ngige to focus on his primary duty of attracting Federal Government attention rather than concentrating on fault finding with a performing and successful Governor.

“Ngige should be further told that the Government House, Awka, has been ransacked and that no forgotten property of his was found anywhere around there, hence the advice for him to concentrate on attaining quality representation and the state of the National Assembly” the statement declared.

Wrong!!

His post wasn't addressed to any tribe, it was about a person?? He didn't insult Igbos or any other tribe so wtf are you saying??

ALL threads have the potential of turning into a tribal war if Bigots are allowed to have a free time on the thread. The issue isn't about Igbos but Oju-Iku...

Are you saying one cannot discuss Oju-Iku or Awolowo on NL??

What about Tinubu, Achebe, Roaches and Fashola?? Can we discuss them as well??

Can you refer me to a rule on NL that the OP flouted in the aforementioned thread??

I see this as an abuse of power and on the part of OAM419.
The thread was senseless and mischievous. It is classified as a troll thread and deserves to be deleted if not, nairaland will be opening its doors to more troll threads which we all are capable of creating. The op is foolish, he should worry about his father instead of ojukwu.

I think Seun should come to the rescue here and ban this foolish maggot brained op for life. You opened an idiotic post mean for scumbags like you and you come here whining after the right thing was done fool. You also know another legitimate thread in defense of ojukwu was deleted too.
