THE NIGERIAN STATE AND THE INESCAPABLE WAVE OF NATIONWIDE PROTESTS: MY OPINION.

Twitter / x : @monakii01

I hope this piece gets to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or his handlers. This is a reder to express my deep concern and displeasure at the President’s highly awaited response which failed to address the genuine demands of well-meaning Nigerians and protesters across the length and breadth of our dear country.
Like the great sage and iconic laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka (who supposed that it will be unfair to judge the Tinubu istration in less that a full year), I have restrained myself in the last fourteen(14) months of making any ill-informed, harsh and rash conclusion about this government but the recent spate of protests in the nooks and crannies of Nigeria has made it necessary for every patriotic Nigerian to lend all necessary voices. Alas! The anticipated comion that the masses expected from this istration is still conspicuously missing.
However, as a patriotic Nigerian, and a firm believer in President Tinubu's istrative capacity who has followed his leadership antecedents well enough, I voted for PBAT in the last presidential election- Not just vote, I also canvassed and galvanised for his candidacy without requesting, getting or expecting any compensation than a better Nigeria of Nigerians’ dream. Based on this, i think i have the moral right to speak up having shun the route of protest.
Well meaning Nigerians (myself, as well) have always and continue to lend our voices in response and advice to government at various times in our history but it is an open secret that most governments in power are oftentimes insensitive to the voices of the masses and don't always heed the voices of reasoning. I do not expect this government to toe this same destructive path. Hence, we must continue to critique, criticise and speak with utmost patriotism until a better Nigeria is achieved. I strongly advise that we take caution and avoid the escalation of this hunger-induced protest in our land. “An hungry man is an angry man”.
The istration of President Tinubu may be making some bold, commendable and necessary reforms like the NELFUND, Credicorp, the 2023 electricity act among others but let me remind the President that production (governance) is incomplete until the product (good governance) reaches the final consumer (masses). Nigerians are yearning for the positive impacts of this government’s policies but its taking too long. Perhaps, the President, being surrounded by hypocritical praise-singers and mischievous sychophants is not in touch with the harsh realities of the people. This posture is reminiscent of what Nigerians have complained about previous governments which has continued to breed mutual disconnect leading to mistrust and distrust between government and citizenry.
To demonstrate genuine commitment towards rebirthing a new and better Nigeria, the following are some of the areas this istration must urgently address to de-escalate this rife tension:
DE-DOLLARISATION OF OUR ECONOMY- Nigeria must reduce its reliance on the dollar as a medium of transaction especially in the local market and/or businesses. The overflow of dollar in our economy is posing a great threat to our Naira and economy. The dollarisation of our economy has made looting a spree among the political elites and their acolytes. The opulent and ostentatious lifestyle and display of wealth by the political class is mind bugging and continues to show that there is a wide margin seperating government and the governed. In order to de-dollarise our economy, government must
Outlaw all extra-banking currency trading (including forex and POS centers)
Sustain the cashless policy of the last istration and ensuring every economically active Nigerian is banked. In doing these, the CBN needs to review frameworks to reduce multiple bank charges and gear commercial banks to improve on their respective service delivery.
Introduction of online/offline credit card that can enable holders transact offline and quickly pay for necessary and compulsory quotidian services like groceries, transport, feeding etc.
Incentives/subsidies for holders and s of the so-introduced “credit card” and those willing to subscribe to government cashless policy. For example, a grocery of N1000 may cost N800 for credit holders. The difference shall be borne by government until the timeline provided to ensure all are banked.
In addition, all international payments or transfer are to be done under the CBN regulation through the local banks.

AGRICULTURE- aggressive, careful and intentional investment in systemised and mechanised farming should be a bold statement and frank commitment of this istration. As per worldbank.org, growth in the agriculture sector is two to four times more effective in raising incomes among the poorest compared to the other sectors. Agriculture is crucial to economic growth. It s for over 4% of world’s GDP and in a developing nation like ours, an estimate of 25% was predicted. On this note, it is instructive to say that the government’s fixation to oil revenue and lack of adequate investments in our agricultural potentials are great recipe for hunger, economic downturn and the resultant inescapable agitation we are experiencing. To avert the hunger in our land, government must do the following:
Concerted efforts by governments at all levels to restore security across the length and width of the country in order to make farmlands secure enough for farmers to operate without fear. This surely also require resolving the farmers’ and herders’ clash once and for all. Creation of a separate ministry for livestock may not be necessary if we can set our priopities right. Nigeria is too broke to own close to fifty ministries.
Robust grants and incentives to existing farmers and motivation of the teeming youth population into the the farming occupation.
Funding, research and development of agricultural machineries and equipments. Agriculture in this 21st century has gone beyond farming at the backyard. The medieval Africa did backyard farming for subsistence and sustenance and not for economic advancements. The government’s ceaseless gospel of backyard farming is sickening and annoying. Is this how the political class survive? By now, Nigerians are expecting government to match actions with intentions by initiating an unprecedentedly robust agriculture development plan which will guarantee fast and accurate results within reasonable timelines.
Foreigh Direct Investments (FDI) partnerships in agricultural value chain. Where we may not have enough strength, it is not out of order to forge partnerships or seek investments from private sectors, Multi National Companies (MNC) and other countries. In any case, agricultural engineering, agricultural technology , food processing and food security must continue to dominate the most of our converstaions at this critical period until food sufficiency is attained.
Re-introduction of the Agricultral Produce Commodity board. This will prevent farmers loss and as well guarantee consumer protection. It will regulate prices of food items and interplay in the agricultural value chain.
Cash crop farming leading to raw materials production. In order to stimulate non-oil investments and revenue, this istration must invest and incentivise farmers to cultivate cash crops that can feed the nation as well as make raw materials available for basic processes leading to massive industrialisation. Where there are excess produce, we can start considering export in order to earn foreign exchange or needed goods in return.

POWER- electricity is a key factor of production for any developing society or economy like Nigeria. From research, electricity has low substitutability with other factors of production and this may frustrate productivity and resulting outputs when unavailable. Also, a serious government needs energy to deliver key public services including health ,education, industrialisation etc. Therefore, government just have to do more in the power sector. The 2023 Electric Power Reform Act is indeed commendable for unbundling the sector and restoring the state’s authority in the power sector to its pre-1999 levels. The big puzzle now is why are the federating units not exploring this opportunity to provide accessible and affordable power to Nigerians? So far, the governors have done nothing to consolidate the giant stride made by the federal government in that sector, perhaps because they have access to all forms of alternative electricity at tax payers expense. To make matter worse, the banding of electricity s is an aberration and at best it is an unacceptable segregation which is against moral and fundamental rights of the Nigerian masses. Why should a serious government descriminates its own citizens? There are alot of potentials in the rural areas just like we have in the city. These potentials sometimes require power to blossom. Unfortunately, the banding will in the long-run encourage increased urban congestion when we are suppose to be encouraging decongestion and rural migration. Must everyone live in the city to enjoy a decent supply of power? This is pure discimination and totally unacceptable. A reversal of the banding policy and mass metering is a quick way for government to intervene here.
More disturbing is the inappreciable role of the power minister in the saddle. He appears to be ill-informed and ill-equiped for the role. He is also unconnected and non-challant about to the plight of the people with respect to our power needs. It is public knowledge that the DISCOs’ licences have expired since september 2023 and public is yet to be informed of any positive step forward there around despite the DISCOs’ uninspiring and shabby conduct in the last ten years. Government cannot keep running business as usual and not expect backlash from the people. To avoid continual distrust, government officials must be able and responsibile in conduction of public affairs and to this effect, President Tinubu needs to step in to sanitise the power sector and rid it of monumental corruption. Giving its importance to national development, the president must get government at all levels to work concertedly to ensure power is available for all. At less than 5000Mega Watts and with a population of over 200million people, Nigeria appears unready for the big leap towards development. God, the cretor of the Universe created light(power) first before anyother thing.

REVIVAL OF DEAD/ MORIBUND GOVERNMENT CORPORATIONS AND REVERSAL OF PRIVATISED ONES- The federal government must be bold enough to revive important but dead /moribund corporations in order to create more jobs , to boost local productions, to regulate market interplay and to reduce extortionist tendencies which has been the bane of a capitalist and free market economy. The Nigeria Sugar Company in Bachita, Ajaokuta steel, Iwopin Paper Mill, Oil Refineries and several others are very important to our development at this critical period. Nigeria cannot afford to run a free market economy for now therefore government must set the pace and provide enabling environment through regulation, participation and frameworks for interplay across key sectors. This applies to all poorly packaged privitisations done under previous istrations. Protectionism and Statism is very important now! If Nigerians must pay more for services let us get to see and/or enjoy the quality services first.

REDUCTION OF GOVERNANCE COST- the call for the reduction of cost of governance may becoming stale but indeed is very necessary and cannot be less so. In order to walk the talk, this government and its officials must demonstrate its genuineness by sacrificing for this country. Government need to cut cost to reflect the brokeness that they often mouth at the slightest conversation. The masses cannot continue to tight their belts while government officials are loosing theirs. Are the politicians more Nigerian?

Some of the immediate ways to cut government expenses would be reduction of ministers and ministries, reduction of aids for government officials, slashing of salaries of political office holders, reduction of foreign trips and ban of medical tourism. By doing these, we would have a need to revamp our health and fix our country to the benefit of all and sundry.
As a member of United Nations (UN) and World Trade Organization (WTO) , the Nigerian government must ensure that only profitable and beneficial trades are entered into. All diplomatic and economic relationships that do not benefit the Nigerian state and people must be severed forthwith. Our government representatives have oftentimes conduct shady and opaque businesses on our behalf only to serve their own personal and pecuniary gains. Nigeria is bleeding and we must stop the hemorrhage now. The Pandora paper scandal, Panama Paper Scandal, Haliburton scandal, P&ID scam are some of the monumental frauds that government officials have packaged and served to the face of Nigerians and yet no single soul has been brought to book. How long can we continue with this recklessness?
In view of the above, this government needs to do the following
1. Strengthen anti corruption institutions like EFCC, IC to undertake speedy, sincere and unbias prosecution of corrupt officials.
2. Create enabling environments for foreign and local businesses to thrive and produce what the country needs locally. This will eliminate wastages, reduce cost and corruption

F. ELECTORAL REFORM - In fairness, the new local government fiscal autonomy is a step in the right direction but for it to serve genuine purpose, series of measures still need to be taken. Below are some reasonable suggestions in this regard.
1. Constitution amendment to allow INEC or a similar new central body to be in charge of local government election. Currently, most, infact all State Independent Electoral Commissions (SIECs) are at the beck and call of respective governors and are not desirable nor fit for the task of conducting credible grassroot elections capable of birthing a better Nigeria that the masses are seeking. SIECs need be scrapped in order to allow the people choose their representatives through their voting power.
2. The local government elections should be made to come up as mid-term score card for the upper federating tiers of government.
3. Outlaw all politics of sharing money, vote buying and ballot snatching.
4. Introduction of BVN/NIN/synchronized online voting, vote counting and transmission of result in order to reduce cost, improve efficiency, eliminate electoral fraud and guarantee free, fair and credible elections.
There is a sharp disconnect between the political class and the Nigerian mssses and only a sincere and thorough electoral reforms that guarantee free, fair and credible elections can eliminate the widening gap and leadership recklessness.

Important to note, subsidy is gone and I believe it should remain so. I stand with this government on this. Although, I, like many Nigerians have always faulted the time and atmosphere of the pronouncement, regardless, there is no better time to do the right thing. However, as a people, we need to learn to do the right thing the right way. We need to find a smart way to ameliorate and extinguish the agonizing pains that has accompanied the subsidy removal regime. To this end, government must find a way to make our local and private refineries work as soon as possible.

As well, the floating of naira may be needed but one would have expected the President to be comionate enough to give decent healing time for one strong policy before visiting another. Bye and large, there is no going back to our Egypt. The patrotic masses are expecting the cushioning effects and not a reversal to the old order. The president, as a father of the nation, must live up to the responsibility of heeding the yearnings and whinings of genuine citizens at this critical time and set solutions in motion.

Finally, an average human being (certainly, Nigerians as well) is crooked by nature and only stringent laws can curb and checkmate human excesses. Record has shown that most of the beautiful ideas of government do not get to the masses because some or most of our people (especially people in power) are self serving and unrepentantly corrupt. Mr President should be more aware and must do everything possible to eliminate any form of obstacle or impediment that may prevent our people from benefiting from some of the great initiatives of this istration.
Real patriots do not just stand-by but galvanise and endure for his or her country and leaders (in charge) in order to achieve a greater and better country together. This I have always do and will continue to. Let us all be aware that we have no other country and we owe ourselves the duty to build our Nation well. We can't keep doing things the old way and expect a different result. The President’s tactics just have to change at this historical point in order to provide the charge for a new Nigeria. I pray for Mr. President to succeed as we hope he will swing into action enroute Nigeria's path to recovery and prosperity.
God bless Nigeria.

Honestly, I find it baffling that the Nigerian education system has been structured in a way that Nigerians suffer to make and take decisions.

I can relate. I quite understand what you are possibly going through. However, I will suggest you look towards a master in business education or education management or pure/applied economics or any other related field. This will allow you to take upward leap with gradual deviation. You may later decide to take a doctoral study in business istration or management or economics or any other area you later develop interest.

In my opinion, the PGD route is a very tough, needless and expensive voyage which you can avoid. Good enough, you can afford one of the private universities, that, makes it easier for you to get ission on a more flexible note. You just have to channel the fund you want to use for PGD into one of the masters I suggested up there.

PS: In whatever decision you take, please give your best and hit a good grade in order to convince anyone who scrutinizes your CV.

I agree with Laolu Akande, Hajia Uwais is a brilliant lawyer, one of the women making Nigeria proud. She should even be considered for a job at the humanitarian ministry, top boss and decision maker there .

I bet you don't know the uwais or you are mixing things up.

Unfortunately, Nigeria is in a shambolic state because we (especially our leaders) show contempt and disdain for inputs of our followers especially genuine and patriotic ones. In this regard, Tinubu has really bested the most of our past leaders.

However, I would have alleviate the suffering of the masses by subsidizing cost of staple foods and providing general food security plus commence a constitutional-rework to fast track a genuine fiscal and true federalism.... If I were president Tinubu.
