“While it is wise to learn from experience, it is wiser to learn from the experiences of others.”- Rick Warren

Let us learn from these three individuals:

Alex worked as a junior ant for a firm on the island . As a youth, he was interested in technology to develop software solutions that would improve people's lives. But then, he was afraid to transition.

He said “ I was just going to waste my time and energy and would probably not learn anything by the end of the 3 months, because people usually say tech is hard, but Moat Academy changed that.”

To read full interview with Alex : https://nairaland.macsoftware.info/6497228/ing-software-development-less-than

He currently works as a Senior Software Engineer at Scam AI, a platform for detecting deepfakes, speech clones, and AI-powered scams.

Sunkanmi resigned from his position as a field engineer at Remote Monitoring Solution Company to pursue a career in technology. Then his fear surfaced.

He said, “My biggest fear was the complexity and difficulty attached to learning programming languages. I did not believe I would be able to understand programming and web development in that short space of time.”

To read full interview with Sunkanmi :https://moatacademy.com/blog/2019/04/02/i-was-able-to-develop-a-professional-networking-site-and-i-now-have-a-job-as-a-software-developer-sunkanmi/

Sunkanmi is currently employed in the UK at Hottinger Bruel & Kjaer (HBK) as a Software Engineer. The business serves a variety of industries, including defense, energy, and aerospace.

Mariam was a graduate who was job hunting and preparing for interviews when her aunt advised she go into software development. Then she developed a dream of becoming one of the best female software developers in the world, but along came this fear. According to her:

“My biggest fear was if I can ever be able to understand programming and the fear pushed me away from actually studying computer science in Uni. How I feel now? I am ready to go at any length to become the best in software development”

To read the full interview with Mariam : https://moatacademy.com/blog/2017/08/22/moat-academy-is-the-best-academy-you-can-ever-choose-for-your-career-in-software-development-i-now-have-a-job-as-a-developer-mariam-adedeji-2/

Undeterred, Mariam pursued her dream. Today, she works as a Senior Application Engineer at Sourcegraph, a complete AI Software Development Life Cycle platform headquartered at Silicon Valley, USA.

Aside from their status as elite professionals, these three individuals have four things in common:

1. They have dreams: They yearned for change and a better future. You should have big dreams too!

Dream big, because dreams come true.” Alex Morgan

2. They overcame fear: Resistance comes after a dream. It takes numerous forms, including self-doubt, fear, procrastination, perfectionism, and self-sabotage. You should not allow fear to hold you back.

“If your dreams don't scare you, they're not big enough.” - Muhammad Ali

3. They are committed to their dream, investing time and resources for success. What separates an amateur from a professional is commitment!

"If you don't sacrifice for what you want, what you want becomes the sacrifice"—Anonymous

4. They all graduated from Moat Academy: Yes, their journey began at Moat Academy where an environment has been developed to encourage rapid growth and excellent performance in order for participants to become remarkable developers.

The next cohort of Moat Academy will resume on August 11, 2025. To apply, complete this assessment form on https://moatacademy.com//apply

@CirocBoi,
There is no need to "school" us .

Nairaland is an open forum. Please , if you are achieving better results, come and list those you have schooled and they are making impact in the software development industry.

Until then, we still believe you have been so much beclouded with negativity that you can no longer acknowledge any thing good.

CirocBoi:

Try and be honest with yourself, it's not matter of negativity, I will school you and your best tutor. NO CAP

And, from your investigation ; you cannot deduce that this is an innovation.

Innovation is defined as the process of bringing about new ideas, methods, products, services, or solutions that have a significant positive impact and value. It involves transforming creative concepts into tangible outcomes that improve efficiency, and effectiveness, or address unmet needs.

That is where Nigerians are falling behind, what you failed to recognize they are seeing it outside the country. Organizations and individuals outside Nigeria are reaching out to us. For example; last year, on the invitation of the Mayor of Moscow , we were in Russia where we signed a partnership agreement with Moscow Innovation Agency ( a development institute responsible for creating a truly favourable environment for the advancement of technology in Moscow; a one-stop shop for Moscow's innovation ecosystem.

Below is a shot clip of the event, right there is Abiola Ilupeju ( Principal Consultant , Moat Academy).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKvqyEpg7HU?si=U_Qw9h57gA5Yvc-b

Today, over 60% of our alumni are not working for companies in Nigeria, they are either based in those countries or working remotely, leading teams.

Please let those that are interested apply and take your negativity away .

Deelaw:
From my investigation, you all will be shocked that this program is just 3months!

"THREE MONTHS" for a "Fullstack Development Program" which includes both web development and backend (frontend & backend combined) 👀🤦

Please, what is achieved here is through pure dedication over the years .

If you can see all these people listed here and many more not listed working in global tech companies coming from one single place in Nigeria.

Nigerians, don't pull down a global organisation created by your people because of your ulterior motive even if you cannot . Please just keep quiet. The bootcamp is for those interested.

He was just derailing the post.

From the post , it is evidenced enough for everybody to see that we are achieving the results; it is not a marketing gimmicks. Moreover, he isn't a prospective participant as he once claimed to be an IT specialist but he is limited by his knowledge.

The issue here is that we are breaking down the entry barrier to this profession. And, some of those who have worked hard for years to get to where they are now are disappointed to see some of our graduates who have only spent a few months/years getting there!

We hope that more people interested in becoming developers can discern this and make an informed decision.

@Obaidan,

What do you mean by unrealistic?
Are you saying that all of the persons mentioned there aren't real?
Do not discourage people from pursuing their dreams in life. People like you were the skeptics when alumni like Mariam, who works in a senior role with Sourcegraph (headquartered in Silicon Valley, USA), came to the bootcamp. If Mariam had listened to individuals like you, she would not be where she is today; last year, she was named a global Tech hero!

@ iLoveYouToo: No one who has performed well in the program is expected to intern. Internships and apprenticeships are the two routes to the professional world.

An apprenticeship is mostly structured (time required and what to learn from time to time is already scheduled), and you learn from masters. In contrast, an internship is unstructured and you only learn from your senior colleagues while carrying out their tasks.

At Moat Academy, we operate an apprenticeship model, and you have probably seen several of our graduates landing full-time jobs following their training.

We our alumni and develop long-term relationships with them. Since they have been empowered, they are no longer where they used to be , and our relationship even becomes mutual. Our Alumni are key part of our framework.

The time commitment cannot be compromised; to be very good, you must commit the time. Our August cohort will require daily attendance.

Technology is designed to make life easier — to automate processes, save time, and reduce human effort.
But behind every line of code is a human, and behind every system is a person who relies on it.

As software developers, our work is more than creating features.
It is noble — and it carries serious responsibility.

Technical Glitch, A Life Lost
Following the release of candidates’ results by the t issions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Nigeria, a 19-year-old student tragically ended her life after receiving what she believed was a poor UTME (Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination) score: she thought her dreams were over. Her confidence was shattered. This is heartbreaking.

Not until days after the release of the result that investigation into JAMB’s system revealed that the system could not be trusted due to technical error.

Not a hack.
Not a breach.
Just… a glitch.

But the consequence? Irreversible.

The Weight We Carry as Developers
At Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com/ ), when teaching software development, we lay emphasis on the need to test edge cases, understand the “why” beneath every abstractions and know the impact of every decision made in the code. It is not until one starts building systems for safety-critical industries like airline, health monitoring etc that security be given its place because the truth is: every piece of software is safety-critical as long as real people are using it.

The platforms we build hold the dreams, data, time, and dignity of real s: even the smallest bug can have devastating consequences.

Security has long be classified as a “non-functional requirement”, much like visual design or UX enhancements. How can security be a ‘nice to have’ ? optional ? No, It must be central to how we build!

Avoiding the Glitch
Some 8 years ago when Moat Academy was founded, one of the challenge in the software industry we sought to address was the proliferation of software developers who ‘created applications’ through a copy-and-paste approach – code monkeys who simply copy insecure and unvalidated codes from online forums and use indiscriminately because they either do not have a deep understanding or are not aware of security best practices in application development.

Now, in the era of vibe coding, the conversation must shift even further. We must teach developers to understand the building blocks of software, to explore why things work, because that is how innovators and creators are born!

The software we build has real consequences; it can determine: who gets itted to school, who gets hired, who gets credit, who feels empowered and who feels invisible, we can not afford to leave the fate our s in the hands of LLM prompts.

The tragedy surrounding the JAMB result is a reminder that all “technical glitches” must be investigated and where necessary, people must be held able.

That’s why data protection regulations like the GDPR mandate disclosure of security breaches.
Transparency and ability help us grow, improve, and restore public trust.

Today, we celebrate the participants in our ongoing coding boot camp (Cohort 30), which began on January 13, 2025, for their hard work and devotion.

On Thursday, April 10, 2025, with about a week left in the boot camp, our participants demonstrated various web applications they developed from the ground up using the newly gained knowledge, skills and abilities.

Here, we highlight four of them that can deal with some of the issues facing the world today.

Transportation: Peddle by Ifeoluwa

Having another means of transportation that is accessible and efficiently run that does not use fossil fuel energy could bring some relief to the masses
Peddle is a bicycle rental platform where can hire bicycles at the nearest station and return them to the closest station to their final destination.

"I currently utilize some of the concepts learnt during the boot camp from working with PHP and integrating APIs to develop and automate workflows."- Blessing ( one of the cohort from our last concluded boot camp )

Can we meet you?

My name is Blessing Iyobosa, a results-driven graduate of Mechanical Engineering.

What were you doing before coming to Moat Academy?

I worked as a reporting analyst.

What is the name of your current company and role?

I currently work in the Applications development Unit as a Process Automation Developer/Engineer in a Financial Institution.

What exactly do you want to achieve with the software development skills?

I want to use my software development skills to solve real-world and business problems by building digital solutions that are efficient, -friendly, and scalable.

Why did you choose Moat Academy for Developers?

Three reasons: Track record of results, affordability and a recommendation.
Moat Academy has a track record of developers it has trained over the years with various projects being developed at the end of the 13 weeks boot camp. I needed a place that would accelerate my progress and be able to come up with result(project) that will make me utilize tech stacks. Moat Academy is top quality/value when you compare it to the boot camp fee. These reasons made me choose Moat Academy.

How have things changed for you since gaining software development skills?

I am confident about my JavaScript skills because that was my ‘last bus-stop’ after completing HTML & CSS while trying self-learning. The academy has a unique and structured way of teaching which makes you understand concepts easily. It helped me go beyond just understanding syntax, just being a mere programmer to actually building meaningful full stack solutions.

What was your biggest fear before coming to Moat Academy and what do you feel about it now?

Will I actually be able to come up with a project or build a working application? Not just mere programming but putting all programming concepts together to come up with a working application. How possible was it within a short period of time? That was the biggest doubt I had, but after going through the Academy’s hands-on and well-structured approach, that doubt was eradicated. I now feel more confident, especially in my ability to break down problems and build functional solutions from scratch.

How will you describe your experience in Moat Academy?

It was a challenging yet transformative experience. Transformative in the sense that I came in as one with just basic knowledge of HTML and CSS and left being a Full stack web developer. What captured my attention was the standard training facility and environment the first day I stepped in. I met well-experienced tutors who carried the class along. I must commend the tutors as it not really that easy to teach and impact knowledge. I also got to meet and work with brilliant and smart minds as well.

What have you been able to achieve with the training?

I have been able to come up with web applications built from scratch and launch my self into the tech space. Moat has set the foundation.

Can you share your experiences with us since you graduated from Moat Academy?

Thus far, it has been a nice experience. I have written some tech assessments and gone though some interviews. I currently utilize some of the concepts learnt during the boot camp from working with PHP and integrating APIs to develop and automate workflows.

What advice do you have for those coming into Moat Academy?

Have the mindset that I am here for serious business and I must leave with a result.
Do not miss classes or take classes with laxity because you might find yourself lagging behind.
Practice, Practice, Practice what was taught in class because that is the only way you can get used to new concepts.
Don’t stress yourself with external videos or resources during the course of the boot camp.
Be active and participate in the leadership session.
Be ready to learn and put in the best effort.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

A lead software Engineer.

Are You Prepared for an Apprenticeship Journey?

When Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com )was birthed, the plan of our faculty was to replicate themselves in our Participants… And that is the power of Apprenticeship!

A job seeker needs to get industry experience to perform better at the workplace. Such trainings give a huge experience in making their career a success. It is also important to choose the right path of training whether it is apprenticeship or internship to increase one’s employability.

An apprenticeship is the practice of asg a novice to learn a trade under the direction of an expert ( Master); as an apprentice, you’re in the trenches alongside the veterans to gain in-depth experience in a specific field. It consists of a combination of hands-on experience and classroom education.

Under an apprenticeship model, you work alongside experts and doing what they do, you learn to solve challenges in a real-world context, working both creatively and effectively. In respect of the guild system, becoming a master craftsman took years of hard work. You had to through these stages :

Apprentice : This is the first step in learning a trade. You learn and work with a master. You usually don’t earn any money and your family had to pay the master to take you on. In this stage, your focus is inwards. Your goal is not only to grow your skills and yourself but also to learn how to learn. You should be like a sponge, to soak up as much knowledge as possible.

Journeyman : Once you had finished your apprenticeship you could earn money. Then you would be called journeyman. Sometimes you had to travel around to find work. Like the apprentice, the journeyman still maintaining an inward focus to learn and grow in their craft. And yet, add another focus of building an ever-larger portfolio of applications that demonstrates his progress in the craft.

Master: As proof of your skill, you often had to make a masterpiece; eventually you might a guild as a master craftsman. In short, masters view the acquisition, usage and sharing of superior skill as the most important part of being a software craftsman.

At Moat Academy, you learn from the likes of Abiola:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OyFwYGcyAfQ

Abiola Ilupeju, professional experience spans over 15 years in which she developed various applications among which is a patented software product - Customer Management and Self-Service portal.

Perhaps you can transform major challenges into blessings if your name is Blessing!

That was exactly what Blessing, one of the participants at Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com ) last concluded coding boot camp did; his desire to solve the waste management challenge with his recently acquired software development skills led him to develop a web application he called Eco Earn.

According to the Environmental Performance Index of 2024, Nigeria was ranked 105th out of 180 countries with a score of 27 out of 100, indicating Nigeria still generates massive amounts of solid waste, with poor collection and management posing immense threats to human and environmental health.

If Eco-Earn is adopted, it will help in the collection and recovery of energy and materials from waste. In turn, it becomes a money-spinner for everyday people; according to the Managing Director of Pioneer Waste Master Limited, about $250 billion is yet to be tapped in Nigeria's waste management sector.

Eco Earn ( https://moatcohorts.com.ng/c29/ecoearn ) is an application that incentivizes the general public to separate and gather their waste in order to be collected by waste agents known as collectors at a price set by the of the application. The collectors will in turn sell to the recycling company at a profit margin.

The application has an end ( screenshot below) where most activities are managed and reports are generated.

Blessing developed this application from the technologies learned at Moat Academy Coding Bootcamp using HTML, CSS, Bootstrap, and Javascript/JQuery for the frontend along with PHP OOP for the backend.

Blessing has now ed the development team of one of the nation's commercial banks

We are happy once again to have stayed true to our commitment to raise remarkable software developers.

The role of mentorship or expert coaching cannot be overemphasized when it comes to competence development and career growth.

Mentoring is an approach of training and developing people, where more experienced individuals (mentors) share their understanding and experience with less experienced individuals (mentees).

This might not apply to all fields of endeavor but there are some fields that mentoring is highly necessary in order to attain greatness. These fields have the following two characteristics:

1. A well-developed field, i.e. one in which the best performers have achieved a level of performance that distinguishes them from those
who are new to the area.
2. A competitive field.

Software development field has the two above:
It is stratified: we have junior developers, senior developers etc and it is highly competitive: there are a lot of coding challenges and hackathons.

When you try to review those who have attained greatness in some of the fields that fall into this category. For Instance; Football:

A quick google search on who was Messi’s mentor will fetch Ronaldinho.
And who was Ronaldinho’s mentor will fetch our own Jay Jay Okocha
But conduct a search on who was Okocha’s mentor, it will fetch nobody.

Messi won a record eight ballon d’or awards, Ronaldinho won two FIFA world player of year awards but unfortunately Okocha didn’t win any.

For most that have attained greatness in these fields have benefited from mentoring/ expert coaching such as Usain bolt with Glen Mill, Tobi Amusan with Lacena Golding-Clarke and many others.

Since software development field fall into this category, it cannot be exempted: Let’s take Mark Zuckerberg as a Case Study:

Mark Zuckerberg’s father, Edward, was an entrepreneur. He maintained a dental clinic at the family’s residency.

Computer programming was a hobby for Mark Zuckerberg. When he turned six, his father taught him Atari BASIC Programming.

As Mark Zuckerberg became more interested in programming, he became very proficient. Within four to six years, Mark created ZuckNet, a chat network for his father’s dental clinic and the rest of his family.

Mark’s family thought that he could develop much further and hence hired a software developer teacher David Newman. During this high school period, he enhanced his programming skills significantly.

In your software development journey, you need an expert that knows much about where you are going and how to get there.

This will help you maneuver learning plateaus among many other benefits: A learning plateau is a flat place in a learning curve, indicating a period of little or no progress.

We have heard of so many that have experienced stagnation in their learning journey; some stopped at CSS, JavaScript even HTML and couldn’t move no further while some even spent longer than they should on their road to mastery.

At Moat Academy ( https://moatacademy.com ) , we have a specially designed curriculum and an effective pedagogy with our team of experts (our trainers are well experienced software engineers) that enables our participants to achieve proficiency in a short period of time.

Our Alumni are enjoying accelerated careers within and outside the country!
