Here is mine:

Actually, this is a true story that happened to a family friend of mine.

A few years ago in Abeokuta, I visited one of my friend's house. It was just a normal friendly visit. The house was a 2 storey building 3-bedroom flat in the main town.

On my first visit, I noticed there was no light but wasn't surprised. I mean this is Nigeria it's is not as if there is always power but one thing that caught my attention was that there didn't seem to be any sign of power in that house which made me investigate.

At this moment, I stood up to take a look around the house and tracing their wires from the main pole outside. There was no wire coming into the house so I assumed they must either be doing something illegal or their line was disconnected by PHCN.

When he came back inside, we discussed at length and I asked my friend how often do they have light, He laughed! like I just cracked a silly joke before he explained the whole ordeal and the reason I am writing this thread.
They rented the house 2 years ago not knowing that the house had an outstanding power debt of over a million naira. 1,000,000 naira nepa bill debt! how did it happen? from when did they start owing?

He told me they had been owing for several years but instead of paying up, they bribed the Nepa officials when they came around till the debt go totally out of hand. Whenever they were disconnected, they would go ahead to pay an electrician to connect them illegally till they got caught and they were totally cut off from the grid before been slapped with a huge bill and several fines for cheating on the system

I Pitied my friend. He had rented an apartment without doing proper investigation and now he has to suffer the consequences of this mistake for as long as he lived in the house. If he had done his investigation, he would have asked for previous bills and asked neighbors around the house for information on the house. If he had known, he wouldn't have rented that house for sure.

My advice for people renting a new house is to do your investigation yourself. Do not rely on any agent to do it for you because he will not live in the house, it is you that will live in the house with your family.

1. Check around the house for power, for water, for security.

2. Go to where the power is connected and check. Ask for old bills before renting the house. Preferably, rent a house with a prepaid meter installed and get an electrician to install it for you. Visit https://nepa.ng to pay your bills if you don't know how to.

3. Ask, ask, ask. This is the best way to get information as far as I am concerned. Ask people living in the house nicely about things in the house after that, ask neighbors around the same questions to compare their answers to be sure your agent is no lying to you.

Well this is my advice for people renting a new apartment. Share yours below
P.S: That my Friend has now move to his own house now with his wife and 2 kids.

Operating the prepaid meter is very easy as it is a very simple device.

There are a few basic commands to know if you want to:

1. Check your meter number
2. Load a token
3. Check your unit balance

1. Check your meter number: To check your meter number, Firstly make sure your meter is connected directly to a wall socket when there is electricity (If you run out of units and there is still power, you can power it using AA batteries) then dial "65" on the keypad and the blue enter button.

The meter will display your meter number which you can use to purchase a token in step 2.

2. Load a token: A token is a 20digit number that you can use to top up your prepaid meter. It is just like the paper recharge card you purchase to top up your phone. Firstly, you need to purchase the token online or offline. To purchase it offline, visit a vendor that sells electricity and pay them for the token. They will give you the number which you will then type into your meter.

After you type the number, press enter and the meter will tell you "accept"(sometimes it doesn't show this but still works) once it works, power will be restored to your house and your units will be topped up.

The other method which is faster is to purchase the units online from a reliable vendor. I use https://nepa.ng due to their simplicity and speed.
For this, you need an internet-connected device and a credit card. Simply head over to their site and choose your disco. For example Ibedc, Ikeja electric, etc, type in your meter number, and how much you want to buy.

After this, the system will confirm your name or the name ed with the meter to avoid errors then you can proceed to pay securely via flutterwave portal online by entering your card details. You can also pay by entering your bank if you don't want to use your card.

After this, they will and send you your token on that page and on your email. Then you can load your token on your meter as I explained earlier.

3. To check your balance, simply dial "07" into the meter and it will show you your remaining units in KWh(Kilowatthour).

I hope this tutorial was easy for you to follow. If you have any issues, reply under this thread so that I and other nairalanders can help you out.

If you like the tutorial then share it. Also, look our for my how to save energy tutorial with simple home hacks anyone can do.

One of the first things to know when dealing with sea freight is how to calculate cbm.
CBM simply means cubic meter = (length x breath x height)

Because Ships carry goods via container, it means every good that enters in should fit into a container. If it is a small good, it should fit into a pallette or a cbm.

For example I want to ship a laptop, A dell laptop box dimension as shown below is 0.15m x 0.57m x 0.465m = 0.04cbm approximately.
To know how many will fit in a cbm we do 1/0.04 = 25boxes.

The same thing goes for anything good you want to buy. All you need to do is know the dimension of the carton your supplier is putting it into in order to estimate your costs.

Intro

one of the biggest problems for people in the importation business is shipping. After all the market research and negotiating with the manufacturer especially when buying goods from china, you finally want to bring in the goods to Nigeria.
Usually the importer in faced with two options. Air or Sea, air being faster and sea slower obviously.

What a lot of importers do not know especially new importers is that each means of transportation have their advantages and disadvantages and it also depends a lot on what you are shipping.

Generally as a rule of thumb, when shipping anything below 150kg, air is advised generally while anything above 150kg is generally cheaper with sea or not?

Take for example a Seller Ada buys a box of a dozen drilling machines.
Each machine weighs 12kg with the weight of the crate or box 6kg that is a total of 150kg.
she pays the manufacturer 1000usd for the whole purchase and now she is ready to ship.
If she ships by air , she will pays150 * 7$ per kg(the average air mail price) =1070usd to ship an item of 1000usd, that means she has to sell the machines at at least 3 times the original price to make any profit without even taking into consideration domestic logistics etc.
If she wants to sell online on jumia or konga for instance that means 4 times the price due to commission and fulfillment.

If she had fitted all those machines into a box , the total size could not have been more than 1/4 of a cbm.
Average cbm price can go as high as 700usd (including clearing)
1/4 * 700usd =175 usd. Instead of spending twice, Ada saves 895usd buy shipping via sea a whooping 5 times lower than air.

The reason for this is because sea shipping is measured by space not weight so it doesn't really matted how heavy your good is , you can always plan ahead of time and save a lot of money. If she plans well ahead of time, communicates with her manufacturer and gets a good manufacturer, she can buy more machines next time and save more money.
Another this is she didn't order a whole container. This is called LCL contrary to popular belief that sea shipping is all about containers. Yes its about containers but you don't have to order a whole container you can order small quantities if you have a heavy good.

This of course doesn't mean air is bad. Air is fast and good for small sample quantities and light goods but For any thing big and heavy sea should be your number one option.

*More than 90% of global trading is done via sea. Oh Yeah! Except Nigeria is not on the globe then you might not consider sea freight.*

To ship your goods successfully via sea you need to do the following things
1. Measure the weight and dimensions of your goods in kg and cbm.(Your manufacturer should be able to do it for you)
2. Plan way ahead of time. The business world is competitive and sea shipping takes time to arrive and clear.
3. Get a reliable shipping agent or Freight forwarder that is specialized in sea shipping.
