True and real business men and women don't waste their time responding to threads about immigration. You are not a business man looking a thing. You are just confused about what to do in life to get rich quick. Being on this thread... you are on a long thing.

peacengine:

Why do you feel the need to write an epistle in response to my view? Even mentioning President's son and bike accident, don't people survive worse accidentz without travelling? Bro, I'm here to see if there are opportunities for guyz like me to start business of exporting but all I see is job seeking here and there. If I'm rich, I won't relocate, this is my personal choice, I'm a business man looking for things I can export to make dough.

Go to settings/phone/inbound calls - enable it/ringtone - set tone.

Back to settings again/notification - enable it/notification sound - enable it/Notification tone - should show the ringtone you set above.

Dial your freetone number severally to test.

Hope this helps.

Big congrats to God's glory! EmmyToluwa, this is just the beginning... God has greater things ahead for you and family. I faithfully tap into this favour. God will provide me a testimony to share... I believe!

EmmyToluwa:
LONG POST ALERT!!!

Hello all!!! I have been a silent follower of this thread though I have posted a few times in the past. I just felt it is important I share my landing experience so far so that people can learn from our experience. my time line follows:

1. Bought tickets October 3rd (please note not a mistake, na faith and good deal)

2. Got PPR November 8th 2017 (after 8 months of wait)

3. COPR and port returned November 27th (I had sent out our port November 13th).

4. Landed in Toronto 17th February with my wife and son via Ethiopian Airlines, and received by my friend who took us to his place in London (we are still in his house at the moment), Ontario. The landing procedure was a bit slow as we landed on a Saturday and the customs officials were not so fast. Because of this we couldn't get our SIN and our PR card was not processed also as we couldn't the friend's postal code. The customs officer we met was a nice woman, she even gave us her phone to call my friend who had been waiting outside. They didn't check our bags and she asked us to sign Goods to follow forms as I was sending food over from Naija. To cut long story short, we reached London, ON around 2:16pm as it is a 2hr drive from Toronto.

5. On Sunday 17th February, we followed my friend to his church, a white dominated church, and after the service we were introduced as first-timers, this was where our miracle began. The woman (my angel actually) that attended to us, also an immigrant (from El Salvador) happened to be an HR manager at one of the Top 5 banks in Canada and while we were talking about our induction process in church got to know that we just arrived in Canada the day before asked about our employment status and I told her we will start to look for jobs once we are settled. Well na so she told me her bank would be having a career fair for job seekers and she will want to me to attend. I was like wetin I dey do wey I no go fit go?? I don reach there self!!!

6. Monday 19th was a public holiday (Family day, please note no be only naija we like holiday o....dem get holiday us for here sef).

7. Tuesday, 20th February, my friend drove us to Service Canada. We got our SIN and the woman we spoke with gave us the procedure to submit address for PR card. We went from there to Scotia bank to open and got $3000 in credit card immediately to start credit history.

8. Wednesday 21st, we went to get phones. This we did under my friend's plan as those ppl didn't want to give phone to a newcomer on plan. Well I didn't mind, I sha got iPhone 8 to pay over 24months.

9. Thursday 22nd February, I was home all through applying and reading for my A conversion. I had aready started this from Naija. We also got a a very good laptop at a crazy price from Kijiji, for here kijiji and Facebook market place are your friends. I know there are other good ones too! We did not really look for house as my friend said he will introduce us to a friend who is an expert at settling new comers, including house and other things.

10. Friday 23rd, I attended the TD bank Career fair and it was fun, I told my interviewer I willing to start with them but they have to know that I am more qualified than the entry level job they are recruiting for. The woman said she understands, but that if selected, I have to be patient with them because they have a 1-yr period of assessing new intakes before determining if you can move up the ladder. Come and see me as I dey speak phone wey I no say na lie. I come dey dictate when I neva even do test let alone interview. The woman said they will get back if they feel say my skills and experience allign with their available roles.

11. Saturday/Sunday, we were home applying for jobs and adjusting CV. Oh I missed out the part where the my angel said I should send her my CV so that she can fine tune it to the way TD bank likes candidate's CVs to be like. So this was the CV i took to the CF on Friday.

12. Monday, 26th I received an email that I should complete an online assessment which I did like 36 hrs later as I was visiting friends and still dropping CVs to companies and also visited Access Center for bridging programs (another story).

13. Wedneday 28th Febraury, I received a call fro TD bank HR inviting me for an interview on Friday. I called my angel immediately and she immediately sent me their interview format to use, She said I should practice many times infront of a mirror. Well I did.

14. Thursday, we went to check our first house and the agent/lanlord were very willing to give us the apartment because of the friend of my friend. The only issue was that we have to wait one month for the current tenant to vacate and for repair works to be done. For my mind, I was wondering what was there to repair, everything looks good!!!

15. Yesterday, March 2nd, I was at TD bank with 6 other candidates, infact na then I know say naija peeps dey waka. of the 7, 3 of us were Nigerians. The interview was in 4 stages, role play, group assignment, assessment and a one-one interview. At the end, I was drained but yet fulfilled in a way I couldn't explain. The HR lady told us to expect feed backs and possible appointments by next week.

16. This afternoon, my friend and I went to drop another friend who was travelling to the US and on our way back I was telling him our my confidence has dropped since the interview and I was feeling they might be calling to tell me no. See Satan!!!

As we got back home, my phone rang and it was the HR recruiter with her nice voice. She asked me what I tot about the interviews and I how tot I performed. My heart wan cut, i tot this is it, maybe they have rejected me. I told her I learnt alot and also that I am confident my skills and experience are well aligned with the role. And then I heard, WELL I AM HAPPY TO INFORM YOU THAT WE ARE OFFERING YOU A CONDITIONAL EMPLOYMENT!! I shouted!!! The thing just be like say I dey dream. I was like I neva even get house, I don get job. All the things the woman dey talk I no even hear, I was just too happy.

So my peeps, na so our tory be so far so. Na so God show say Na HIM be the REAL GOD oooo. Much as this is an entry level job, I am happy I can quickly have my CV updated with a Canadian Experience.

I pray we all have good stories to tell in this Canadian dream!!!

POF is basically for unencumbered funds or funds that can be easily converted into cash(liquid), documents that show property or capital payable to you, such as: stocks, bonds, debentures, treasury bills; documents that guarantee payment of a set amount of money, which are payable to you, such as: bankers draft, cheques, travellers cheques and money orders. POF can also be mutual funds, cash in a fixed deposit , savings , checking or current , all of which must be at least 6 months old at the time of application. If you are currently 49.5 years old, then accessing your pension balance at 50 can be a reasonable deduction. Otherwise, pension fund balances will not fly.

Note: POF is funds readily available to your and family to sustain basic needs of life for at least 6 months after landing without any from government or people. POF cannot be borrowed. POF can be gifted cash or cash deposit from an immediate family member only and in this case, your spouse and you still have to show proof of the source.

Any funds perceived by CIC or immigration officers as not readily available to your in cash in your own name, will not fly as POF. You will be rendered economically inissible in Canada if you cannot show the minimum POF required for the size of your family. POF will need to be maintained from the beginning of your application process until you land in Canada.

I hope this clarifies. You can get more details here: https://www.canada.ca/en/immigration-refugees-citizenship/services/immigrate-canada/express-entry/become-candidate/eligibility/proof-funds.html

Cheers!

I do appreciate your response. At the embolden, I don't think it is necessary. This is an online forum, where the real personality of people is difficult to measure. Not everyone gets involved in any act of dishonesty or criminal act: I am not one! I was only asking if it could be used; considering the fact that one can still have access to this pension again( having withdrawn the first 25%) when one clocks 50 years. Your insinuation was highly unfounded and lacks substance.Once again,I do sincerely appreciate the time used to respond to my inquiries.[/quote]

Stay in the current job based on the following reasons:
Pros:
1. Current job/pay is just below $7 and bonuses from sales can offset that
2. You and wifey are earning, family income still higher
3. National organization with benefit plans to cover family
4. Lower cost of living

Cons:
1. New job requires 3 hour commuting
2. Wifey loses her job, family earning decreases and burden falls on you
3. One man business will lack organizational structure and benefits do not cover family. Providing them for family will erode your earnings.
4. Higher cost of living associated with big cities

You have been looking at things from your own perspective(my field). Consider wifey as well. I believe she would love to be busy and ive rather than sit at home while you bear all the financial burden. In my opinion, the cons outweigh the pros. So my advice is that you stay put on your current job and city, wait for similar opportunity in you current location. You can also hone your skills in what you are doing currently. Be open to new careers and opportunities and don't clink on the phrase "my field". If you find another opportunity in your field, maybe in another big city, use the pros and cons model above.

Cheers!

Anytime I read though he comments hear I'm always pleasantly amazed at the depth o knowledge and insight we have access to for free here. God bless all of you who share your experience freely here. It really helps a lot of people around the world. Pls I need advice on an issue. I just got a new job offer that's in my field (technical maintenance and repairs) and I like the learning opportunity it offers and also the Canadian experience in my field. But I'm having second tots about taking it for the following reasons: 1. It's 3 hrs away from the city where I currently reside with my family so I will have to commute daily, weekly, or move there. 2. I already have a customer service job that pays like $7 less but my present job has opportunities for bonuses from sales which can be more than your salary in a good month. My wife works at same job and if we move together for d New job she will have to stop work. That means temporary loss of second income. 3. The new job is a one man business but my present job is with a national organization so the medical and other plans are better than with the new offer and I'm considering this cos I have kids. 4. If I move alone temporarily I will have to incure additional rent expenses and other costs that would've been shared if I dey with family. 5. Because the loction of the new job offer is in a bigger city, expenses there are a bit higher ( cost of renting, childcare, future house purchase etc) than where I am now. But there are also more job opportunities in a bigger city with higher salaries.

The main reason I'm still considering the new offer is because it's in my field and the few days I spent trying it out showed there is a lot to learn from the job. I'm just scared of jumping from a tree I am familiar with to an unknown, smaller, but promising tree. The bills are already lined up and there is no room for error (lol) but my heart really wants the new job cos it's in my field and I will derive joy from doing it. But is joy all that matters? Please advice

Canadian work experience or not, some us will learn the hard way, some will unlearn to learn the new culture while some will still find it hard to blend until maybe over a longer period. Our past Nigerian work experiences will have some role to play. Training can direct us to pointers we can use to integrate into the new culture and some by association. We all can't be Canadian overnight. It is easier for kids to integrate into new cultures than adults based on their very active learning rate. Adults will still do some Nigerian stuff by default or caught off guard until over some time when the environment starts taking some of it off.

Please note: There's Canadian work experience and there's organizational work culture. Both aren't the same. No one organization have the same work culture. For job interviews, I would suggest we research more on their organizational work culture because interviewers watch to see how you would be a perfect fit. Canadian work experience is so open that it is not a one-size-fits-all for the ten provinces. In other words, what will seem to be a Canadian work experience for company A is actually their organisational culture and don't be wrong to take the same experience to deal with company B at another interview. Both organizational cultures(company A & company B) are Canadian work experiences.

Research more on organisational culture and exhibit that and your Canadian work experience hurdle would have been jumped without a notice.

N/B: My opinion might not necessarily be aligned with that of others.

Thanks a lot alt3r3go for sharing your experience. I will go with the advice of giving them the addy of someone I know as well as linking the PR card application.

Cheers!

alt3r3g0:

I had this same question prior to (short) landing, let me just share my experience and lessons learnt.

When we landed, the officer asked for an addy, i told him i will send it later online but he insisted i gave him one even if it was temporary, that i can change it later within a 3 week period. He also gave me a number to call to do so. The number always directed me to an answering machine that "everyone is busy i should raise a CSE" and then after two weeks of callls, i raised a CSE for me and my spouse (Copy paste same message) to update the address and we both got auto-response mails from cic a few second later.

I linked my PR card application to my cic and got an email when it was approved. A few days later, My wife got an email (her address on the email was the new address) about sending another port. So i am thinking, since her address was updated, then mine must be updated as well right? WRONG!!

After another two weeks of no pr card, ed CIC to ask when and what addy they sent my Pr card. Turns out it was the first addy i gave at POE. Anyways, any system with humans will be prone to errors.

So it's best to keep it simple. If you already have someone that can keep it safe for you, just give them that addy right away. I know someone that gave an address with a different province at POE and no issues (This was after my case though).

If you don't have that address, then maybe raise a CSE and request they acknowledge the change of addy.

Then link your PR card so you know in time when things start to go south.

Hi Blackbuddy, just a quick one. What address did you use while filling your declaration form onboard as you were moving into a hotel?

Thanks!

Blackbuddy:

Hi, I landed and did not give any address at the airport as I went to a hotel from there. I told the officer that I would update an address online when I get a fixed abode. The guy shook my hand and told me to ride on. You can update your address or change it within 180 days of landing at this link, https://services3.cic.gc.ca/ecas/introduction.do?app=coanotify

To God be the glory! Congratulations bro. Started the FSWP in 2010 and never succeeded. I gave up at some point until I read a moving post like yours in early 2016, then I knew nothing about provincial nominee programs - PNP. Someone got a stress-free successful applications and is now living in Canny. I tapped into that testominy(not trying to sound religious here, I acknowledge the work of God with High regards) and applied in the same year. Everything about it until this moment has also been stress-free for me as tapped. Those of us who apply through PNP can tell how cumbersome/long the process could be. I had my visa within six months of application. From provincial nomination to visa at hand took about 9 months(delayed for two months in the process to add our 2nd child) which could have been faster.

With that same faith, I am tapping into your testimony too. I want to come back here to share with all so God's power can be made known. Because I have said this and I believe it, God will make it happen. When His Glory is returned to Him, He will surely show Himself as God. For those of the christian faith, faith without works is dead. Bro you are just a product of divine favor. Not all who have put all the work will get this. For something more than the natural to happen, "super" has to be added to it to make it supernatural.

For those who have the faith, put action into it and pray for favor, your answers will surely come IJN...Amen!

freeradical:
I'm back people with yet another of my recent experience with career advancement in Canada. So you guys me telling you all how I got two jobs and was spoilt for choice over which to pick. Well to refresh those that may have forgotten I chose the big firm (even though the position was temporary and entry level hourly operator while the other was permanent ,full time but for a smaller firm) because I believed it had better prospects for career growth.

Well I took my humble pie and resumed for the hourly operator job on 2nd January and we were all placed on a 3day orientation and training program. It went on like that up until Thurs when something dramatic happened. After we have been dispersed to head to our various departments, as I was waiting in the lobby with my other colleagues for our department rep, I was approached by the operations manager who asked if I could spare him 5mins of my time. I obliged and he took me to a meeting room and we were immediately ed by another manager. I sensed I was going to be interviewed again, so I quickly psyched myself. The operations manager started by telling me he needed a new group manager in his department as one of his guys just got promoted and moved to another location and he feels I can fill that position. The next 30-45mins was a grilling but yet refreshing interview where I was mainly asked competency based questions that required I relate my answers very well to my past experiences (which all came from Nigeria).

Afterwards I left the interview feeling like what just happened and went back to the rest of my hourly operator crew only for the heads upstairs to send for me again after like 30mins. When I came up this time, the operations manager was there to receive me and then he told me there is someone he will like me to meet. This time it was the overall Plant manager who is the top boss in the Edmonton plant. I almost froze to the floor but then as omo naija my head quickly correct grin. After a firm handshake with the Plant manager I was taken to a larger conference room just me and him. Then he started interviewing me again. As usual I kept relating my answers to past work experiences from Nigeria. In the end he thanked me and encouraged me to keep developing myself especially in the new job I was being offered as they strictly apply meritocracy in career advancement in d organization.

I closed from work that still perplexed at how fast my fortunes are about to change. I got home and was still narrating the whole ordeal to my wife when I got a call from the operations manager that I have got the job and if I'm willing to accept the offer. I answered in the affirmative. Then he asked me to come into the plant the next day(we were billed to attend a safety training off-site as the hourly operators) as I need to sign a new offer letter and start immediately on the new management position I was offered.

So people that was how I started the year/week as a floor staff but ended the week as a first-line manager. The purpose of my sharing this story is not to in any way pride in my efforts because I owe everything I am to God but to encourage someone/anyone who can dare to believe in the impossible. Yes miracles still do happen. It's not by he that runneth but on the Lord that showeth mercy. Be courageous my fellow naija Canadians. Go out there and claim what's yours!

Peace.

Nice thought process @AZeD1. You really made your resume open. Kindly share examples of "identifying details" on a resume. Your response will be highly appreciated. Keep up the positive drive!

AZeD1:
Also do not be afraid to try something different. I got my job via Reddit.
I posted my resume on Ottawas subreddit but removed all identifying details.

My present company was planning to hire in January but after seeing my resume ( no need to put out an advert or screen so many candidates) the CEO got in touch, and the rest is history.

From this statement, success is for the informed and well prepared. There are platforms for this and if one takes advantage of them, it changes a lot and makes integration easier.

I am preparing for same and really ire the zeal from freeradical. My spouse and I got some inspiration from the story. Maternal as an experienced senior has said it in a few lines but if you dig further, there is more to unravel for the wise ones.

Pre-arrival Preparations are not compulsory. Success as well is not a guarantee. One has to be prepared to succeed. Where do you see yourself in 5 years after migration? If you cannot answer this question or have a glimpse of what it would look like, then migrating will be like jumping on a moving wagon(to any place it takes).

Some people learnt the hard way. Some got informed before hand. The success rate lies between the differences in timing and the choices they make. So... you decide!

Migration is not for everyone. If you must, it must be for the best reasons...
maternal:

The gov't of Canada spends millions of dollars each year to help bridge immigrants into the system so they can become successful. A good amount don't use it. A lot don't even take sound advice from knowledgeable people on the ground.

My people, sorry for late response. To for canprep you have to Please ONE of the following documents confirming your eligibility: 1.) IRCC invitation to obtain pre-arrival services, 2.) Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) letter/document, 3.) port request letter that indicates Permanent Resident visa issuance, 4.) Single Entry Permanent Resident Visa, or 5.) Permanent Resident Visa pick up notification letter.

A long the line, you will be assigned a mentor. Mentoring will be via email communications and skype calls. Bridging programs is best when you land but you can commence the application process after you receive COPR. You can start preparing for job openings from here but actually getting the job is rare as most recruiters will go for citizens or permanent residents in Canada. The canprep mentoring will expose you to a lot.

Your resume style will change to Canadian. There are course modules that will teach you different styles. You will get insights on job search techniques and how to succeed in the Canadian workplace after you get a job. It's a step by step preparation and it will guide your focus to positive events for the future.

You will end up a better equipped person that what you already know. There's lot's of culture shock awaiting new migrants but when you get to know something, it's no longer a shock. Like boys scouts, "Be prepared".

Success = opportunity meeting preparedness.

Cheers.
vascey:

My brother this is the same thing I have been saying. Abi them send them ni.
Meanwhile, How are you doing canprep mentoring from here. can you share the link? Is it also possible to partake in those bridging programs while awaiting PR?

I think you are doing great. This is surely the way to go. While I have been working on aligning my current professional qualification with theirs, I am yet to enroll in any school for additional courses. I have also been looking up job openings I am interested in. This will help me tailor my resume properly.

Nice one

Migration is not for everybody. If there's no interest in it, one should not be on this thread. Living In Canada/Life As A Canadian Immigrant is the topic(and not a question) of the thread. Please let's get to read more experiences from our landed brothers and sisters out there to the benefit of those planning to land or even the newly landed. This is a life changing thread and not a gamble, families are involved.

On the flip side, I have been preparing myself for the new life studying for relevant professional qualifications, working with a CANPREP mentor to be job ready in canny and processing issions for studies to acquire a canny qualification, in my opinion, will help me integrate and adapt to their academic standards. My spouse is also preparing so we can be of benefit to each other and make life easier. We have plans to do a survival job as well as volunteer during the waiting period for the dream job. We have an idea about the neighborhood we will be looking for accommodation, an idea about school for the kids, shopping and other social amenities.

We also do online research every other day and sometimes make phones calls to people to get real answers. I read and learn from this thread regularly. I sieve out what is important to us and add to the heap of information already in our kitty. Shouldn't people be doing same in here? My thoughts.

Now with all the above, we feel very confident about the future, what about you?

One year from medicals or expiration of port, whichever comes first. Yes, visa expiry date is usually stated on stamped visa and COPR.
XX01:

Nah. It is 1 year. Date is normally stated in the visa.

db23, thanks for your response. I now understand the process of declaring cash.

Cheers.

A family travelling together share one landing card, so it won't matter if you split it. So Just declare the money to be safe, you won't get penalised for it.

Blackbuddy, Thanks for your response. Surely it did help to clear my doubts and I'm grateful.

Cheers.
Blackbuddy:

As regards landing with cash, you are expected to declare any cash amount with you equal to or greater than $10,000.00. For amount less than that, you will still need to fill in how much you're bringing on the landing/declaration card. Some people split their POF between the PA and spouse for safety reasons lest the whole cash get lost. We've had an instance where someone slept off on the plane, his cash fell out his pockets and it was at the point of declaration after landing, he realized he de-boarded the plane without his cash! It's usually at Nigerian airports some people don't declare all their cash so as to avoid drama from our customs and immigration people but please once you get here, declare all your cash you came with regardless of where you kept it. These people randomly check and they don't joke with under-declaring cash especially with anti-money laundering and terrorism concerns here. Our Naija people are landing here with $100k in cash and it's not a problem if you can prove the source. They are used to seeing Nigerians with big money, it does not faze them. Hope this helps.

To Salford1, Ballerz and other seniors in the house,

...bringing cash into Canada, can I have about CAD9,000 on me and the same amount on my spouse and still not declare? Can't exactly where I read about principal applicant and spouse spliting their POFs. I need some clarity on the declaration part please.

Thanks in anticipation of your reponses.
