Not many people will take out time to write out a well detailed and comprehensive guide on how to becoming a successful dog breeder in Nigeria—not just in Nigeria, but beyond. IF YOU FOLLOW THESE STEPS, YOU’LL THANK ME LATER. I WROTE SOMETHING SIMILAR YEARS AGO, AND EVERYONE WHO FOLLOWED THEM IS DOING GREAT! Now, let’s get in: The first thing you need to know is this; you see breeding? It is more than just mating two dogs and selling the puppies. Real dog breeding requires dedication, knowledge, ethical breeding practices, and a deep understanding of the breed you choose. —This is one thing many people who call themselves “dog breeders” do not know. They’re just after the money and nothing else. If you truly want to stand out in the Nigerian dog industry and be known for producing top-quality dogs, you must follow a structured approach. At Logadims Canine, we believe in responsible dog breeding, and in this guide, I’ll walk you through everything you need to know to build a reputable name as a dog breeder in Nigeria. 1. Choose the Right Breed & Study It Thoroughly: I’ll always tell people this, before jumping into dog breeding, you need to decide on a specific breed to focus on. Now, I know that many might want to breeder more than 1breed, but I’d personally advice you don’t do more than three(3). It is important to know that every breed has its history, purpose, characteristics, genetic buildups and unique care requirements. You must answer these critical questions: - Why was this breed created? (For guarding, herding, companionship, hunting, etc.) - How was this breed originally bred? (Understanding its lineage and genetic background) - What are the breed's key characteristics? (Size, temperament, energy level, health risks, grooming needs) - Is the breed suitable for the Nigerian climate and lifestyle? - What makes a good representative of the breed? (Appearance, behavior, work ability, etc.) Reading books, watching educational videos, and researching Kyle breed standards will give you a strong foundation. A good place to start isLogadims Canine on YouTube (https://m.youtube.com/@Logadimscanine).—You can add ask me questions there. --- 2. Connect with a Reputable Breeder or Mentor: One of the biggest mistakes new breeders make is starting on their own without guidance. Now, I know that many newbies were corrupted by so called old quacks parading themselves as experts. Starting alome is better than meeting those guys. —who make you political. Making you fight and keep malice with those that can help you in becoming a better breeder. A reputable breeder who has years of experience with your chosen breed can save you from costly mistakes. What to Look for in a Mentor or Ethical Breeder? - Someone who has been in the business for years and has a strong reputation. - A breeder who prioritizes —health, temperament, and proper breeding practices— over profit. - A mentor who understands genetics, bloodlines, and how to produce quality dogs. - Someone who keeps accurate records of their dogs and follows ethical breeding standards. Having a mentor will really-really fast-track your success because you’ll learn from their experiences, avoid common mistakes, and get access to the right breeding stock when you are ready. --- 3. a Kennel Club & Breed-Specific Groups: If you’re serious about becoming a successful breeder, you need to be part of an organized system. Kennel clubs—whether it’s in your state or a national organization —and breed-specific groups will connect you with professionals in the industry, expose you to new knowledge, and help you build credibility. Steps to Take: 1. Find a kennel club in Nigeria – Currently, we have NKC, CCN and COBA. COBA is currently active. 2. Look for breed-specific groups – If you choose to breed Boerboels, Rottweilers, or German Shepherds, find Nigerian communities dedicated to that breed. 3. Participate actively – Attend dog shows, competitions, seminars, and workshops. 4. Build relationships – Let people in the dog industry recognize your name. By being involved in these communities, you will stay updated on breed standards, health guidelines, and best practices in breeding. --- 4. Surround Yourself with Mentors & Influential People in the Dog Industry: No one becomes successful in isolation. Surrounding yourself with mentors, experienced breeders, and dog enthusiasts will help you grow faster. I am a product of many who were far-far ahead of me. They’ve all retired, but when active, they were very instrumental in building me. How to Build Strong Connections: - Attend dog shows and competitions – This is where you’ll meet top breeders and dog lovers. - Visit reputable kennels – See how experienced breeders operate. - Engage with top breeders online – Facebook groups, follow reputable breeders, and ask intelligent questions. - Network at events – Build friendships, collaborate, and learn from others. When you are well-known in the dog community, it becomes even easier for you to sell your puppies and get recognized as a breeder of quality dogs. --- 5. Invest in Proper Veterinary Care & Dog Welfare: A responsible breeder doesn’t just produce dogs —they ensure their dogs are healthy, well-socialized, and properly cared for. Must-Haves for Proper Dog Breeding: 1. Regular Veterinary Checkups – Always have a qualified vet for routine health checks. 2. Up-to-Date Vaccinations & Deworming – Protect your dogs from deadly diseases. 3. Proper Nutrition – Feed your dogs high-quality food and supplements for growth and vitality. 4. Exercise & Training – Keep your dogs mentally and physically stimulated. 5. Clean & Safe Environment – Your kennel should be spacious, hygienic, and comfortable for your dogs. Dogs raised in poor conditions develop behavioral issues, health problems, and weak immune systems, making them harder to sell and sustain in the long run. --- 6. Educate Yourself Continuously: The dog breeding industry is constantly evolving, and new research on genetics, breeding ethics, and canine health is always emerging. To stay ahead, you need to keep learning. Follow the custodians of your respective breeds. Follow their social media handles for updates. Follow top breeders for updates. KEEP LEARNING!! You can also follow me 📌 “Logadims Canine” on YouTube, Facebook and TikTok. Here’s a video I made about 4 years ago on this same topic: Watch Here]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHQTRyhZr3A) 📌 Read books and scientific research on canine genetics, breeding, and behavior. 📌 Attend webinars and seminars by top dog breeders and veterinarians. The more knowledge you have, the better decisions you’ll make as a breeder. --- 7. Build a Strong Reputation & Market Your Brand: Being a successful breeder is not just about having puppies—it’s about having a name people trust. How to Build a Strong Reputation? - Breed ethically – Avoid inbreeding, overbreeding, and unethical practices. - Produce healthy, well-tempered puppies – People will recommend you if you sell top-quality dogs. - Be honest in your dealings – Don’t lie about a puppy’s health, lineage, or training. - Educate your buyers – Teach them about responsible dog ownership. - Use social media to showcase your dogs – Post educational content, puppy updates, and customer testimonials. A strong reputation will make it easy for you to sell your puppies at prices because people will trust the quality of your breeding program. --- Final Thoughts Becoming a successful dog breeder in Nigeria takes time, effort, and dedication. It’s not a get-rich-quick scheme, disasters can happen. Your first, second, third or more dog may not get you something good or even any at all. But if you persist, and if done correctly, it can be a very very rewarding and profitable career. By choosing the right breed, learning from experienced breeders, ing kennel clubs, networking with mentors, providing top-notch care, educating yourself, and building a strong reputation, you’ll establish yourself as a respected and successful breeder. Start today by expanding your knowledge! Do these things and THANK ME LATER! Those who took that part years ago are not regretting. --- Let’s elevate the Nigerian dog industry together! |

One thing you need to know is this— dog training is more than just teaching commands—sit, come, down, etc.—it also involves understanding a dog’s genetics, temperament, and behavior to shape a well-balanced and obedient companion. Yet, across Nigeria—from Port Harcourt to Ibadan to Lagos—many dog owners fall into the hands of so-called “trainers” who lack proper knowledge, leading to wasted money, ineffective training, and even behavioral damage to dogs. As a dog trainer, canine behaviorist, and working dog enthusiast, I have seen too many cases where unqualified trainers create more problems than they solve. The guide in this post will help you identify real professionals, avoid scams, and make sure your dog gets the right training. Key Qualities of a Good Dog Trainer 1. Understanding of Genetics and Temperament Training methods should be tailored to a dog’s breed, genetic makeup, and individual temperament. A trainer who doesn’t understand this might use one-size-fits-all techniques that fail to bring out the best in your dog. 2. A Structured Training Schedule Professional dog trainers don’t just improvise—they follow a clear and systematic plan that addresses foundational obedience, behavior correction, and advanced training (if needed). If a trainer cannot outline a structured program, that’s a red flag. 3. Proven Experience with Various Breeds An effective trainer has hands-on experience with different breeds and their unique characteristics. A trainer who has only worked with small companion dogs may struggle with working breeds like Rottweilers, Boerboels, or Malinois. 4. Knowledge of Behavioral Science Real trainers understand the psychology behind dog behavior and use scientifically proven techniques to correct unwanted behaviors. If a trainer cannot explain why a certain method works, be cautious. 5. Ability to Handle Common Training Challenges Many dogs exhibit behavioral issues such as aggression, fear, separation anxiety, or excessive stubbornness. A qualified trainer should be able to identify the root cause of these issues and apply the right techniques to fix them. 6. Communication and Owner Involvement A good trainer does not just train dogs—they educate owners too. Your dog should listen to YOU, not just the trainer. Any trainer who excludes you from the process is not helping you in the long run. Red Flags: Avoid These Types of Trainers 1. Trainers Promising Instant Results Effective dog training takes time. Anyone who claims to “fix” your dog in a few days is likely using shortcuts that may cause problems later. 2. Harsh and Abusive Training Methods A professional trainer should never rely solely on force, intimidation, or outdated dominance techniques only.—There’s a reason why I used the word “only” there 🙃. Yes, I know that force, intimidation and co. can create fear and aggression instead of respect and obedience. 3. Trainers Who Lack Breed-Specific Knowledge Each breed has different motivations, energy levels, and instincts. A trainer who treats all dogs the same way will struggle to get real results. 4. No Clear Training Plan or Progress Updates A serious trainer tracks your dog’s progress, sets clear goals, and explains each step of the training process. If they cannot tell you what they are working on and why, they are not professionals. 5. Unwillingness to Work with the Owner If a trainer only works with the dog and doesn’t teach you how to continue the training at home, you’re wasting your money. The goal is for YOU to have control over your dog, not just the trainer. If You’re Looking for a Professional Dog Trainer in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Owerri, Imo State, and it’s environs. Finding a skilled and experienced trainer is crucial for your dog’s development. The reason is simple: there are many ignorant people selling dogs they know little to nothing about. Before you buy a dog, make sure you evaluate not just the dog but also the breeder or puppy owner. Evaluating just the puppy can be difficult since everyone is now selling at high prices. You may not be able to differentiate between genuine and fake sellers. Even backyard breeders are now selling at the same prices as responsible and ethical breeders. Never judge a dog or puppy based on its price. Buying the most expensive dog online doesn’t guarantee that you’re getting a quality dog or the best one. To get a quality dog or puppy, consider the following: 1. Confirm that the puppy is from parents with a traceable history. Look at the dogs that make up the pedigree, particularly the first three generations. Check the competitions the parents participated in and their grades or ratings. 2. Analyze the breeder. Who is he or she? What are their records? What are they known for? While awards can be a sign of quality, be cautious, as in some places, like Nigeria, only a few awards are truly reliable. 3. Don’t assume that a high price means quality. The saying “You always get what you pay for” is not always true when it comes to buying dogs. If you are ignorant of what you want or are about to get, people can sell you an expensive dog with hype-filled descriptions like “solid,” “super,” “pedigree,” or “pure,” and you’ll happily pay. 4. Do your research. Don’t be carried away by stories. Buying from a kennel club or a ed member of any kennel club is not a guarantee that you’re getting a quality dog. ~ Logadims 2 Likes |

, whatever you want your dog to be, whether in shows, sports, personal promotion, etc. your preparation and that of the dog starts with the grandparents and parents of the dog first. Genetics is nearly everything. Genetics can get you so far. But without discipline, a sound environment, the right types of equipment, and training genetics may not do much; and without genetics, there may be little to nothing to train or condition. |

The number of scammers is on the rise. Every dog lover who intends getting a new dog or puppy MUST be careful. If you're looking to purchase a new puppy/dog, it's important to be aware of puppy scammers who may try to take advantage of you. Here are some tips on how to avoid puppy/dog scammers: 1. Do your research: Before purchasing or adopting a puppy, do your due diligence and research reputable breeders, kennels or adoption agencies. Look out for what people are saying about them or reviews, ask for references, and their credentials. Your research shouldn’t be about the breeder alone but on what you want. To avoid what getting into “what I ordered vs what I got” 2. Beware of unrealistic prices: If a price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Puppy/dog scammers often offer puppies at unrealistically low prices to lure in unsuspecting buyers. 3. Don't send/transfer money anyhow: Scammers often ask for payment via transfer. Avoid sending money until you have met the breeder, seen someone who knows him/her or confirmed that he is what he truly say he is; either in person and verified their legitimacy from someone you know very well. 4. Insist on seeing the puppy in person: Scammers often use a their people’s photos or stolen images to puppies. Insist on seeing the puppy in person before making any payments. —That is if you’ve not yet seen someone who can vouch for him/her and you’re just not comfortable… 5. Trust your gut: If something feels off or suspicious, trust your instincts and walk away. A reputable breeder or or dog person should be transparent, trustworthy, and responsive to your questions and concerns. By following these tips and staying vigilant, you can avoid falling victim to puppy/dog scammers. ~ logadims . . . . . #gsdfn #gsdfnrivers #nigeriandog #nigeriandogs #nigeriandogbreeders #nigeriandoglovers #nigeriandogtrainers #nigeria #gsdfnigeria
