CROSS RIVER STATE: ON THE HIGHWAY TO NOWHERE The Governor of Cross River State is a professor likewise his deputy. That invariably means they have the highest academic qualifications and thus enviably qualified to occupy that position. However, there is a difference between 'textbook knowledge' and the 'knowledge of governance'. Since coming into office in 2015, the governor has become famous for using 'jaw breaking' and ambiguous words to describe his annual budgets. Budget of Kenetic Crystalization, Budget of Quabalistic Densification and Budget of Olympotic Meristemasis are just some of those 'funny' tittles. But like many have been asking, how will these titles help in bringing development to the state? To further widen the space for 'chasing shadows', the state government has created ministries for payroll, climate change, grants, and the most outrageous; ministry for aviation and ministry for Foreign Affairs. Let me remind us that Foreign Affairs and Aviation are both domiciled in the 'exclusive list' by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. I.e, they can only be istered by the Federal Government. so what exactly is the motive of the Governor for embarking on these 'ghost missions'? , a journalist who criticized the governor has been in detention since then. He created the ministry of Climate Change and still went on to destroy large forests in the state while trying to construct a 'Super Highway'. According to a report in the Times Newspaper, the Governor even contemplated on creating a ministry of Defense for Cross River State. You can follow me on twitter @Aganjustice |

emmasege: Pls don't mind these people, most of them have never traveled outside their city of residence before. Anyone who is a regular visitor at the Aminu Kano International Airport Kano would testify that the new terminal was completed (including the renovation of the old terminal )even before the 2015 general elections. The only new structure at that airport after the 2015 general elections is the entrance gate which is just beside the Nigeria Army 3Brigades barracks. However Buhari also deserves some accolades for ensuring that all these projects are put to use. The only problem is his failure to give honour to whom honour is due just the same way he has been exposing and name-shaming those who contributed greatly to the underdevelopment of the country. No zombie should quote me ooo, I am not feeling fine. 2 Likes |

https://selectng.com.ng/why-government-is-becoming-less-important-in-our-lives/ The welfare of the citizens is one of the major responsibilities of government hence they ensure that they provide employment for the masses. Government also performs the function of settling dispute between individuals and between individuals and the government. Government does this through the istration of justice. This is just an ideal concept of how government should work. But unfortunately, here in Nigeria, we have come to accept certain anomalies as the normal way of doing things; providing electricity for yourself is just one of them. As we grow old as a nation, we are becoming less dependent on government day-by-day due to the fact that we are as private citizens are now shouldering the responsibilities of government despite the fact that we are being heavily taxed by the same government. As a Nigerian, you will provide electricity for yourself (at least 80 percent of your energy needs), send your kids to private schools because the public schools are in comatose. You provide security at your residence, business premises and get escorts (if you can afford) least you will be kidnapped! Being a Nigerian, you have to ensure that you sink a bole hole else you won’t use water! These are just some of the many functions of government that Nigerians are now performing on behalf of the government without getting any accolade from the government. To remind us, the major functions of government www.selectng.com.ng has enumerated some of those functions bellow: FUNCTIONS OF GOVERNMENT All over the world, government performs several functions which include the following: Security: one of the most important functions of government is to provide adequate security for the protection of life and properties. Law and order: It is the duty of government to maintain law and order by ensuring that people obey the laws that are made. Provision of basic amenities: Government also has the responsibility of providing basic social amenities such as good roads, pipe born water, electricity, public health facilities etc. Employment: The government also performs the function of providing employment for the citizens either directly or indirectly by ensuring that the citizens are gainfully employed by the private sector. Defense: The government also performs the function of defending the country against external aggressors https://selectng.com.ng/why-government-is-becoming-less-important-in-our-lives/ |

https://selectng.com.ng/permanent-solution-for-body-odour/ Body odor (or B.O., bromhidrosis, osmidrosis or ozochrotia) is a perceived unpleasant smell our bodies can give off when bacteria that live on the skin break down sweat into acids. Some say it is the smell of bacteria growing on the body, but it really is the result of bacteria breaking down protein into certain acids. In simple and lay man’s language, body odour is an unpleasant smell emanating from our body. Body odor usually becomes evident if measures are not taken when a human reaches puberty – 14-16 years of age in females and 15-17 years of age in males. Body odour is never pleasant, and we’ve all been crammed on a train or been in a busy shopping centre and noticed the distinctive smell of stale sweat. Men sweat more than women, so it’s no surprise they are the worst offenders. But is it a case of poor hygiene, or do some people have a medical condition that makes them sweat more than average? WHO ARE THOSE SUSCEPTIBLE TO BODY ODOUR? People who are obese, those who regularly eat spicy foods, as well as individuals with certain medical conditions, such as diabetes , are more susceptible to having body odor. People who sweat too much ( those with hyperhidrosis) may also be susceptible to body odor, however, often the salt level of their sweat is too high for the bacteria to break down – it depends where the excess sweating is occurring and which type of sweat glands are involved. Sweat itself is virtually odorless to humans; it is the rapid multiplication of bacteria in the presence of sweat and what they do (break sweat down into acids) that eventually causes the unpleasant smell. The smell is perceived as unpleasant, many believe, because most of us have been brought up to dislike it. Body odor is most likely to occur in our feet, groin, armpits, genitals, pubic hair and other hair, belly button, anus, behind the ears, and to some (lesser) extent on the rest of our skin. Body odor can have a nice and specific smell to the individual, and can be used – especially by dogs and other animals to identify people. Each person’s unique body odor can be influenced by diet, gender, health, and medication. How can this menace called body odour be tackled? What are the best solutions for managing body odour? https://selectng.com.ng/permanent-solution-for-body-odour/ |

https://selectng.com.ng/origin-of-cultism-in-nigeria/ ORIGIN OF CULTISM IN NIGERIA With the increase in violent cult clashes across the country in recent times, there has been a lingering question on the origin of cultism in Nigeria which many believe is alien to our culture. To help answer this question, www.selectng.com.ng has put this report together to explain how cult groups came about in Nigeria. Though several traditional cult groups have existed in Africa for a longtime, their activities were based on African traditions and culture which was largely to help in organizing a peaceful society. For instance, in the Old Oyo empire, the Ogboni cult was a group of elderly men whose major duty was to put a checkmate the authority and activities of the Alaafin of Oyo (The traditional ruler of Oyo) to ensure that he did not abuse his powers as the king. In modern day Nigeria, the Pyrates Confraternity is said to be the first established cult group which was formed at the University College, Ibadan, now (University of Ibadan) in 1952 by a group of students which include Nobel Laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, Ralph Opara, Sylvanus Egbuchie and a host of others. Their objectives then were: 1) To compel the colonial government to stop imposing foreign culture on Nigerians, so that Nigerians could be themselves. I.e. live by their own culture, tradition and norms. 2) To work for Nigeria’s independence. 3) To correct the ills of the society by fighting corruption, indiscipline and tribalism. 4) To encourage humanitarian activities such as blood donation and collection of money for charity. This group and its carried out their activities peacefully in order to achieve their aims and objectives. However, personality clashes and rivalry within the group led to some of the being expelled from the group. The expelled went forth to establish other cult groups that were more radical and violent than the initial group; then the rivalry and battle for supremacy began. For example, the Super Eiye Confraternity (National Association of air Lords) led by Adegoke Adeniyi was formed at the University of Ibadan in 1970 while Nolaji Carew formed the Buccaneers Confraternity at the university of Benin the same year. The Supreme Vikings was formed at the University of Portharcourt in 1982 and the at the University of Benin in 1984. Today, the number of cult groups in Nigeria is almost uncountable with every group always fighting others to show its supremacy. www.selectng.com.ng |

https://selectng.com.ng/why-america-is-the-worlds-super-power/ WHY AMERICA IS THE WORLD’s SUPER-POWER? The United States of America is regarded today as the most powerful nation in the world, but have you ever asked why America is considered the most powerful nation in the world? If it is by population, USA is not the most populous nation in the world; China is. If it is by land mass, USA is not the largest nation in the world; Russia is. If it is by civilization, USA is not the first country in the world to be civilized; Egypt is. If it is by human and natural resources, USA is not the country with the most human and natural resources; Nigeria is (arguably). So then, what makes the United States of America so great and powerful? www.selectng.com.ng has put this write up together to x-ray the some of the dynamics that surrounded the emergence of the USA as (arguably) the most powerful nation in the world. The United States of America rose to become the world power during the closing stages of the Second World War when it quietly and secretly developed its nuclear weapons which were used to wipe out the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This not only made Japan to surrender there by bringing to an end the second world war but it equally sent out a strong warning to all the countries in the world; and the fear among the comity of nations that what has happened to Japan might also happen to any nation that openly challenges the USA; and this made America become the strongest super power in world politics. Coupled with massive industrialization, America leveraged on its nuclear power to stamp her giant feet on world politics by maintaining a strong and firm grip on the world’s economy. America became the world police, the big brother of the world, the invisible hand in the economies of almost every nation on the surface of the earth, and the crusader of capitalism. Her influence in the world has grown so much that “Whenever America sneezes, the whole world catches cold”. Read also..Grass to grace stories of Honda, Ford and other billionaires Being fully aware of the pillars of her power, America has ensured that other nations (Except a selected few) are prevented from acquiring or developing nuclear weapons. With the forces of her ‘invincible hand’ through her disciples such as the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (World Bank), America ensured that other nation’s economies are crippled so that USA continue to flourish. Whether good or bad, America knows the source of her power and they don’t joke with it that’s why they have continued to wax stronger. Other nations such as China, , Britain and are also good examples of nations that have kept their source of power close to their chests. https://selectng.com.ng/grass-to-grace-stories-of-honda-ford-and-other-famous-billionaires/ THE GRASS-TO-GRACE STORIES OF HONDA, FORD AND OTHER FAMOUS BILLIONAIRES Every body today wants to become a billionaire whose name will be celebrated all over the world; but actualizing this has been the problem for many. Daily, we often set out for the day with the hope of achieving our goals in life. Even when things don’t go the way we’ve planned, some people still try hard enough to hold on till they get their breakthrough while majority give up as soon as they fail after the first attempt. The ability to remain committed to your dreams even when the success you crave for is not forth coming is actually what defines the rue character of someone who is determined to succeed. To further buttress this point, www.selectn.com.ng has compiled a list of great men/women who defied all obstacles and went on to become rich and famous. So here we go in no particular order: HENRY FORD Most of us know the famous name that is associated with American cars, Henry Ford. Despite the fact that he went on to become so successful and famous all over the world, his beginning was actually nothing close to success. Henry Ford actually failed in his first businesses and that left him broke five times. But he never despaired until he founded the Ford Motor Company; what is today one of the largest automobile companies in America. HONDA Born to a very poor Japanese family, Soichiro Honda struggled to learn automobile repair works but poverty was always a set back for him. Even when he applied for a job as an engineer with Toyota Motor Corporation, he was turned down and this left him jobless for quite some time. He never gave up. Honda later started making sooters of his own at home; and spurred by his neighbours, he went on to establish his own automobile company that today competes with Toyota; a company that had refused to employ him in the past. BILL GATES Most of us only know of Bill Gates as one of the richest man in the world and a name that is synonymous with Microsoft; but we know little or nothing about his humble beginning. After Bill Gates dropped out of Harvard, he started his first business with his business partner called Traf-O-Data. The business was a failure. But they never gave up their dream of establishing a successful technology company so they went ahead to establish Microsoft which has gone on to become a global brand. WALT DISNEY Known today for being the owner of a multi billion dollars business empire that comprise of several movies and themed parks around the world. Walt Disney had a rough time while trying to get started in the business world. Firstly, he was fired by a newspaper editor because “he lacked imagination and had no good ideas”. Thereafter, he started a number of businesses that went bankrupt in no distant time. All the failures he was known for could not discourage him; he kept on trying and failing till he got it right. Today, Disney is a household name in the world of entertainment. ALBERT EINSTEIN The great scientist, Albert Einstein could not speak until he was four years old, and then could not read until he was seven. This made his parents and teachers to believe that he was mentally handicapped; slow and anti-social. The problem went from bad to worse when he was expelled from school and refused ittance to the Zurich Polytechnic. His ‘I-can-do-spirit’ made him to later catch up pretty well and go on to become one of the greatest scientists that has ever existed. Aside winning the Noble price, his name is today almost synonymous withy the word ‘genius’. THOMAS EDISON Famous for haven invented the light bulb, Thomas Edison is the epitome of shear determination. In his early years, teachers told him that he (Edison) was too stupid to learn anything. This was evident as he was fired from his first two jobs for not being productive enough. When trying to invent the light bulb (majorly because he was scared of the dark), he was always failing. He kept on trying even after making 1000 unsuccessful attempts, Edison didn’t give up till he succeeded in inventing the light bulb. WINSTON CHURCHHILL As a student, Churchhill struggled in school and failed the sixth grade. Even after completing his school, his struggles with failure continued. He went into politics but failure accompanied him and every election he contested in he was defeated. But despite the continuous embarrassing defeats, he kept on contesting until he finally became the prime minister of Britain at the age of 62. He went on to become a twice elected prime minister and a noble peace price winner who made a mark for himself. J.K ROWLING A divorced poor lady who struggled to raise a child on her own. J.K Rowling was severely depressed. In the mist of these, she struggled to write a series of novels. Even with the rejections and being penniless, she pushed through till she got a publishing company who decided to take a second look at her work. And in a space of five years, she became one of the richest women in the world. https://selectng.com.ng/grass-to-grace-stories-of-honda-ford-and-other-famous-billionaires/ |

https://selectng.com.ng/is-nigeria-a-mistake/ God is not a fool, so Nigeria can not be a mistake. We are the ones who have made ideological mistakes with the project called Nigeria; and the ignorant misconception that Nigeria is a mistake is first among those mistakes. No country under the sunlight fell from the sky, all countries in the world today came into existence through the decisions and actions of individuals [either covertly or overtly], and Nigeria is not an exception. For those who have been consumed with the illusion that Nigeria is a mistake should please stop for a moment and ask themselves these questions: If this thing they call ‘a mistake’ hadn’t happened, who could have been the custodian of Africa’s reservoir of strength? Without this ‘mistake’, who would have fought to liberate the likes of Namibia and Zimbabwe from colonial captivity? Without this ‘mistake’, who would have ‘jumped and touched the sky’ just to free South Africa from the shackles of apartheid? Without this mistake, what would have been Africa’s strongest bargaining power in world politics? Without this ‘mistake’, who would have carried West Africa on its shoulders? Your guess is as good as mine! The defining factor for every nation has always been the type of leaders that emerged after that nation was created. Let’s take the United States of America for example; after Christopher Columbus [ who discovered the sea route to America] arrived in 1492, European nations such as Spain, Britain, , and the Dutch trooped into the New World [America] with their colonizing missions. Britain later emerged as the major colonizing power in the new world and began to oppress the natives with its harsh istrative style and exploitative laws. When it became unbearable, the people revolted, but Britain resulted to quash their agitations with force. In reaction, thirteen colonies came together, called themselves the United States of America, and declared independence from Britain in1776. This culminated into a war known today as the ‘War of Independence’ between Britain and the thirteen colonies [the United States of America]. Under the leadership, morale, and motivation of General George Washington, the freedom fighters fought gallantly till they defeated Britain and became a sovereign nation. Surprisingly, Washington who had proven to be a great by working with every needed party, efficiently selecting, mentoring and training his officers, and leading his army to victory did not seize the opportunity to hijack power after the nation became independent. Instead, he retired to his home in Virginia after the war. Even when he was later chosen as the president in 1789, he refused to serve more than two , stressing the importance of federalism and ethics; an act which set a precedent and became a template for the United States of America. The great Madiba, Nelson Mandela spent 27 years in prison for fighting to end apartheid in South Africa and to install a democratic government with equal rights and opportunities for both whites and blacks. Even when he was offered the opportunity of his freedom if he renounces his violent struggle; he blatantly rejected through a letter from prison to his daughter Zizi: “My father says: I can not and will not give any undertaking, at a time when I and you, the people, are not free. Your freedom and I can not be separated, I will return” When he was later released in 1990, and later elected as president, he had the yam and knife in his hand; and vengeance would have been an easy task; but he did otherwise. He rallied the nation together and granted amnesty to all those who had sinned against the nation and her citizens during the apartheid regime. Mandela pleaded with the citizens to forgive one another, and stressed the need for a one united and democratic South Africa where no one, whether white or black will be discriminated. Despite the love, , and influence that he commanded, he chose not to re-contest elections for another term. He retired and became a statesman in 1999. F.W De Clerk was the president of South Africa when Nelson Mandela was still in prison, he latter lifted the ban on African National Congress, ANC, a party dominated by black South Africans, and released Mandela from prison. He and Mandela then worked together to end apartheid in South Africa and also conducted a universal election [for both whites and blacks] for the first time in 1994. Nelson Mandela’s ANC defeated De Clerk’s National Party N.P, but then they formed a government of ‘national unity’ and Clerk became a deputy president to Mandela till 1996. Their action saved South Africa from diving into a civil war and helped to heal some of the wounds that the apartheid regime had created. Their effort in ending apartheid earned them the Noble Peace Price in 1993. When Nigerian gained independence in 1960 from Britain, what did our leaders do instead of developing and uniting the nation? They were busy fighting over census figures and resources allocation to various regions. They got themselves busy fighting over who becomes the national leader of the top political parties in the country then (A.G in the South West, NCNC in the south East and Northern Peoples Congress in the North). Our ‘power thirsty’ leaders became drunk with power and unconsciously drove Nigeria into a needless civil war that we are still battling to heal some of its wounds. In Nigeria, our diversity is not the problem but our inability to discover that there is actually ‘strength in our diversity’. From time immemorial, the inability of a people to live together has always been their ignorant refusal to accept each others opinion and tolerate their differences. Today, countries like India who have more population, religious and ethnic diversity than Nigeria are doing exceedingly great as a nation. If we say our diversity is the problem, what then do we say of a nation like Somalia which has been termed a “One Big Family” due to the fact that everyone there is of the same ethnic group, religion, and religious sect [The sunni Muslims], yet has soaked itself in conflicts for many years even as poverty and hunger continue to explode in that African nation. Another African nation, Sudan which has less ethnic groups and tribes than Nigeria swam in a bitter civil war for years, and arrived at the decision to separate between the North and South in 2011. And even after the separation, the new born country, South Sudan remains in the moldy waters of war within itself. We have clipped our interest and frustration so much on the past that we have continued to live in the Nigeria of yesterday that our fathers had built according to their taste; eminently denying ourselves the opportunity of creating a Nigeria of ours for today and the future. Let’s stop the blame game, let’s stop the habit of apportioning blame to every other person except ourselves, and let’s stop burying our heads in the sand while our body is up there in the air like the ostrich. Let’s take responsibility for our failure as a people because poverty knows no tribe, ethnic group or creed. Nigeria will not become better if we refuse to become better Nigerians. As we pray for good leaders, let’s also pray for good followers and good citizens. Read more of my articles on www.selectng.com.ng Follow me on twitter @Aganjustice [email protected] |

The Super Eagles of Nigeria played out a one-all draw with the Samba Boys of Brazil on Sunday October 13, 2019 in Singapore. It took the effort of Real Madrid midfielder, Casemiro in the early stages of the second half to cancel out Joe Aribo’s goal for Nigeria which came late on in the first half of the match. The South Americans who have gone four games so far without recording a win pilled pressure on the Super Eagles in the closing stages of the game but could not find the back of the net despite Nigeria haven lost Francis Uzoho to an injury. After the match in Singapore, here are the five talking points that every football analyst is talking about. JOE ARIBO HAS CEMENTED HIS PLACE IN THE STARTING LINE UP OF THE SUPER EAGLES After a brilliant performance that saw Aribo scoring on his international debute for Nigeria, he earned another invite from the Super Eagles coach for this crucial friendly match. The Rangers FC man appreciated the confidence imposed on him by the coach with another brilliant performance by giving Nigeria the lead in the first half. Though he was substituted late on in the game, it is most certain that he has earned for himself a first team shirt for the Nigerian senior national team. NEYMAR IS BECOMING DISPENSABLE The Paris Saint Germain star got his 100 international caps for the Brazilian National team in their match against Senegal three days ago and started the match against Nigeria. He was a not too impressive game against the Senegalese team and limped off just few minutes after the commencement of the match against Nigeria. This Brazilian team won the Copa America title without Neymar and have been struggling since his return to the team. WILL ALEX IWOBI GO THE SAME WAY OF KELECHI IHEANACHO? The Everton midfielder had a very quiet game till he was substituted fo Ramon Azeez late on in the game. In the absence of Etebo, the Indidi, Iwobi and Aribo combined in the midfield with Alex Iwobi appearing as the weaker link. The introduction of Joe Aribo to the national team has added creativity to the midfield of the super Eagles but what will be the fate of Iwobi when Etebo returns to the team? As we know, Wilfred Indidi has been in superb form for the past two seasons and can hardly be dropped presently for anybody in that team. Joe Aribo has brought in what no midfielder has been able to offer to the team for a couple of years now; creativity and goal scoring ability. So obviously, he will always have a first team shirt if he continues to play this way. Etebo has been a workaholic in the Super Eagles midfield since last year’s world cup in Russia and has been an excellent combination with Indidi. Alex Iwobi’s form has continued to diminish since after moving from Arsenal to Everton. (4)WILL ONOUCHU STILL BE INVITED TO THE SUPER EAGLES? After an abysmal performance at the Nations Cup in Egypt and a woeful display against Brazil, will the Super Eagles coach maintain his confidence in the striker by inviting him again? HAVE WE GOTTEN THE TEAM WE CRAVE FOR YET? After the Super Eagles performance in the last two friendly matches against Ukraine and Brazil respectively, many Nigerians have expressed their satisfaction with the way the team has been playing since finishing third at the African Cup of Nations. Many analysts have even argued that if the Super Eagles had not missed some key players like Etebo, Samuel Kalu and Kenneth Omeruo to injury, Nigeria would have defeated Brazil. But the question is, have we gotten that team that we have long craved for? https://selectng.com.ng/top-20-phrases-in-pidgin-english-and-their-meaning/ |

Sad enough, conceited efforts are not even made presently to develop the city or at least maintain its status as a beautiful city.

https://selectng.com.ng/abuja-is-a-big-lie/ ABUJA IS A BIG LIE! In 1976, the then military government decided to move the capital of Nigeria from Lagos to a new place. The major reason for this was that Lagos was overcrowded, located at the tail end of the country and thus will be an easy target for any external aggressor; hence the city was considered unbefitting for Nigeria; at least that’s what we heard from the grapevine! So Abuja was chosen, and a new city was carved out from Kogi, Niger, and Nasarawa states to be the Federal Capital Territory. The largest national park in Nigeria Well planned, structured, and designed; Nigeria commenced the construction of a model capital for Africa. The city was designed to have five area councils (AMAC, Abaji, Gwagwalada, Kwali, and Bwari) which were then divided into districts. Isn’t that supposed to be awesome? These Area Councils were to be developed in stages with the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) being the first to be developed. So in 1991, Nigeria officially moved her capital from Lagos to Abuja; then everyone one began to move to the new ‘corridor of power”! With a well developed road network and gigantic projects like the Aso Rock Presidential villa, National Assembly Complex, Ministers Hill, Gwarimpa Estate which is the largest estate in West Africa, Abuja became the dream of every Nigerian. Maitama, Asokoro, Utako, Gwarimpa, Jabi and Central Business Districts were the flagship areas to receive the excellent touch of a well planned road network that was accompanied with beautiful landscapes. In the early 2000, (under the istration of former president Olusegun Obasanjo) Abuja was said to be the fastest growing capital in the world due to the massive construction and city beautification projects that were undertaken by the government under the then minister for the FCT, Mallam Nasiru El Rufai to make the city a world class capital. However, since 1991 till date, only AMAC has been developed at least in resemblance of the city’s original master plan. It’s sad to let you know that the Abuja we hear of and see on TV with beautiful streets, and well planned infrastructure is just a small portion of the city which is inhabited by those in the corridors of power. Every good thing you hear about Abuja and every beautiful picture you see about Abuja is just of AMAC. In fact, the Abuja Municipal Area Council (AMAC) is well developed and beautiful that it will be difficult for any foreigner who is visiting Nigeria for the first time to accept that there is a great infrastructural deficit in Nigeria let alone other parts of Abuja. The Abuja they show to us is just within the Central Business District where you will find the CBN headquarters, the NNPC Towers, the Church Gate Towers, the World Trade Centre, the Millennium Tower, the Central Mosque, and The national Encumical center and the three Arms Zone where the National Assembly complex, Eagle Square, Aso Rock presidential Villa are located. Then the beautiful but outrageously expensive residential districts like Asokoro, Maitama, Gwarimpa, Wuse, Utako, and Jabi Districts. represent a city (just like the Nigerian government) without plans for the average citizens. Funny enough, just beside this paradise are shanties and slumps that can only be compared to those in war torn areas like Somalia or Syria. It is sad to know that 27 years after moving Nigeria’s capital from Lagos to Abuja, only AMAC which has been designed for politicians and the super wealthy people has been developed, leaving other Area Councils meant for the low income earners deliberately undeveloped and un attended to like a penniless patient in a private Hospital. Another bitter pill is the fact that about 95 percent of those who live in Abuja are in the satellite towns but however, 99 percent of Abuja’s infrastructure is concentrated in AMAC where the rich, influential and powerful people who make up just one percent of the city’s population reside. The real face of Abuja is not what they show on TV but the towns and villages where majority of the residents live. These places have no vestige of government presence and lack all the basic social amenities just like every other place in Nigeria. Walking through the streets of Abuja, you are surrounded by beautiful and intimidating buildings that will compel you to rue the fact that you are poor. The question most residents ask is “When will Abuja become a city for everyone, both the rich and the poor”? But wait a minute, someone just whispered to me right now that even those beautiful infrastructures that we use to know Abuja for are now in comatose and begging for help. www.selectng.com.ng An Alabama judge has ordered that a man who robbed a bakery of $50.75 be released from his life sentence. Alvin Kennard, 58, was handed the harsh sentence under strict rules introduced in the 1970s to deter repeat offenders. The ruling provoked an emotional reaction from friends and family, who have been visiting Kennard throughout his incarceration. His lawyer, Carla Crowder, said he was "overwhelmed at this opportunity" and would be looked after by family. He wanted to take up his former job as a carpenter, she added. In 1983, when he was 22 years old, Kennard robbed a bakery with a knife. Although there were no injuries, he was sentenced to life without parole. He had previously pleaded guilty to a burglary, meaning he had breached the old Habitual Felony Offender Act, otherwise known as the Three Strikes Law. The law has now been changed to allow the possibility of parole. Appearing in his red-striped prison uniform, Kennard told the judge he took full responsibility for his actions. His family and friends jumped up, cheering and hugging him as the ruling was made. "All of us cried," said his niece, Patricia Jones. He had been talking about being free for over 20 years, she added. "What's extraordinary about Mr Kennard is that even when he thought he was going to be in prison for the rest of his life, he really turned his life around," Ms Crowder said, according to The Guardian. Kennard, who lived in the faith-based wing of Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer, Alabama, told Ms Crowder he had thought about whom he would leave his belongings with , according to ABC News. She said that due to the levels of deprivation in the prison, "he wanted to make sure that somebody else got his thermals so they could stay warm this winter". https://selectng.com.ng/man-who-has-spent-36-years-in-prison-for-stealing-50-to-be-released/ |

South African authorities have seized a plane from Tanzania's national carrier, the Tanzanian government said. The Airbus 220-300 was due to fly from Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday to Dar es Salaam in Tanzania. It was not immediately clear why the action was taken, and South African authorities have not commented. But a retired farmer has said the aircraft was impounded because Tanzania's government had not paid him $33m (£28.8m) it owes in compensation. Tanzania country profile Lawyer Roger Wakefield told the BBC the money was awarded after Tanzania's government seized lands belonging to the South African farmer. A Tanzanian government spokesperson told the BBC that the country's lawyers had arrived in South Africa to investigate. In a statement on Friday, Air Tanzania said that it expected to make flight schedule adjustments "due to unforeseeable circumstances" , but did not give any further details. The carrier's managing director Ladislaus Matindi told Reuters arrangements had been made for engers to resume their journey on another flight. The move comes barely two months after Air Tanzania opened its service to South Africa. Tanzania's President John Magufuli has led attempts to revive the state-owned airline, hoping to boost tourism and turn the country into a major transportation hub. It had just one plane when the president was elected in 2015. Since then, millions of dollars have been spent on the purchase of eight new aircraft. But the carrier is battling several multi-million dollar lawsuits with its former suppliers. This is also not the first time Air Tanzania has had a plane seized. In 2017, Canadian construction firm Stirling Civil Engineering seized the airline's new Bombardier Q400 plane in Canada over a $38m lawsuit. The Q400 was released in March 2018 after Tanzania's prime minister and attorney general negotiated its release. No details were given about the of the settlement. https://selectng.com.ng/air-tanzania-plane-seized-by-south-africa/ |
