In my candid opinion, I think Nigeria should enact a law that prohibits the discussion of electoral matters till 6 months to an election. All these political unrest is just causing unnecessary distraction for the President. Attention that should be paid to national issues is now being shifted to party affairs! It is just so unfortunate. Jonathan should be allowed to do his job. These distractions are detrimental

A widower in Brazil, Aparecido Castaldo, 74, has decided to end his solitutude and marry his pet goat, Carmelita.

World number one Serena Williams insists she is not thinking about Steffi Graf`s all-time record of 22 majors ahead of her US Open final showdown against Victoria Azarenka on Sunday.

The 31-year-old American will try to capture her 17th Grand Slam title and become the oldest women`s champion in US Open history in a repeat of last year`s final which she won in three sets.

Williams seeks her fifth US Open crown in her seventh final, her 21st career Grand Slam final, and would be the first top-seeded champion since Justine Henin in 2007.

And she would move her career Slam total just one shy of Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert for second on the all-time list behind the 22 of retired German star Graf.

"I can`t think about it," Williams said. "It`s so close but still so far. I have to play a great player and play great tennis."


Williams, who has lost only 16 games over six matches, could win the title 18 days before her 32nd birthday, making her 293 days older than Australian Margaret Court was when she won the 1973 title to set the current age mark.

And after titles in 1999, 2002, 2008 and last year, Williams could finally claim back-to-back crowns.

"To be able to defend a title for once would be really awesome," she said.

Not since Williams in 2008 has a US Open champion lifted the trophy without losing a set, but Williams could make it happen Sunday by winning her ninth crown of the year, what would be her career-record title haul for one season.

No matter how Sunday turns out, Williams and Azarenka will have combined to win six of eight Grand Slam titles over the past two years, although their only Grand Slam finals matchups in the span have come in New York.

"When you play against Serena, you have to play your best. She makes me play my best. I think I kind of do the same way to her," Azarenka said.

"We raise each other`s level all the time and take each other to the limit, to go out of that place where you sometimes don`t know how far you can go, but you just still go for it."

Williams leads the all-time rivalry 12-3 but Azarenka has won two of three matches this year, most recently in last month`s Cincinnati final.

Gunmen have abducted the Provincial Bishop of the Niger Delta North Province and Dean of the Anglican Church of Nigeria, Archbishop Ignatius Kattey in Rivers State.

Bishop Kattey and his wife, Beatrice, were kidnapped in Eleme in Eleme Local Government Area of the state at 10:30pm on Friday on their way to Port Harcourt.

Sunday Sun gathered that the kidnappers abandoned Mrs. Kattey in her husband’s car and fled with the bishop into the bush.

No group has claimed responsibility for the crime and no demand for ransom made yet.

Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer, Mrs. Angela Agape said it was the hot chase policemen gave the bandits that forced them to abandon the cleric’s wife.

She said that the State Police Command had intensified efforts to rescue the bishop unhurt and arrest the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, an Anglican reverend in the province who did not want his name in print, said that they (Anglican reverends) would meet in the evening (yesterday) at the Cathedral in Port Harcourt over the incident.

He stated that no had been established with the suspects, while Archbishop Kattey’s whereabouts remained unknown.

A newly wedded wife, Jamila Saidu Umar is now cooling her heels in police cell in Katsina State after being arrested for pouring hot water on her husband, Aminu Umar, during an argument over sex.

It was gathered that Umar incurred his wife’s wrath when he accused her of not performing to his expectation in bed.

The suspect, Jamila Saidu Umar who spoke to Sunday Sun said  “I have confessed my sin to the police at the State CID. I got married to my husband five days before the incident happened and I am his sixth wife.

“My husband had sex with me many times and on each occasion after the act, I would have to use hot water to treat the wound I sustained during the sex.

“My husband loves sex too much and there is no day he would have sex with me that I would not be treating wounds in my body with hot water.

“He complained that I didn’t satisfy him in the bed and that if I must remain with him I must agree to have sex and satisfy him always. I don’t know why he loves sex so much.”

Jamila further explained that an argument ensued between her and her husband on the day of the incident over sex.

“He kept accusing me of not performing to his satisfaction in bed and he started beating me.

“Suddenly I ed that I had hot water on fire, which I was preparing for his  bath. I rushed to the kitchen in annoyance and carried the hot water and poured all on him.”

“Neighbours who were nearby rushed in and rescued him and took him to the General Hospital in Katsina where he is receiving treatment.”

Narrating his ordeal, the victim, Aminu Umar said, “I instructed my wife to prepare hot water for me to bathe and we had a quarrel. My wife suddenly rushed into the kitchen and carried the hot water and before I knew what was happening,  poured the hot water on me. I began to shout for help but she continued pouring the hot water on me.

“As I was shouting for help, the good people in the neighbourhood came to my rescue.”

Speaking on the incident, the Katsina State Commissioner of Police, Mohammed Hurdi , said the ugly incident occurred about 10.00am in the Quarter Area of Katsina.

According to the commissioner, the suspect poured the hot water she was preparing for her husband’s bath   due to the cold weather, on him  during an argument, which resulted in a fight.

“The couple were just five days into their marriage when the incident occurred,” Hurdi said.

He said it was the husband’s cry for help that attracted good Samaritans who rescued and rushed him to the General Hospital in Katsina where he is receiving treatment.

The police commissioner said the suspect was in police custody and would soon be charged to court.

Richard Thomas, 27, collapsed when police informed him about his victim's medical status, and is now waiting to hear if he has contracted the virus.

Thomas knew the woman and was aware that she has another illness, but had not known about the HIV.

He was shocked when he was told and asked to be taken to hospital, Liverpool Crown Court heard.

He had let himself into her home in Leigh, Greater Manchester, uninvited in the middle of the night and she awoke to find him raping her.

"She froze and no words were exchanged. He pulled up his shorts and left," said prosecutor Harry Pepper.

"He was arrested and interviewed and said he had been drinking heavily, taken cocaine and ecstasy and could not recall the incident," he added.

Thomas' barrister, Virginia Hayton, said he could not recall the attack, but said of his victim: "(She) would not lie, she tells the truth. If she says I have done it, I have done it."

Jailing Thomas for five years and four months, Judge Mark Brown said he had committed "this dreadful offence" while she lay asleep, having taken a sleeping tablet, and left her distressed and anxious.

He ordered him to sign the Sex Offenders for life.

Thomas, of Sandringham Drive, Leigh, pleaded guilty to raping the woman on July 20 this year.

Miss Hayton said Thomas, who has previous convictions but none for sexual offences, "is remorseful and cannot understand why he did it and it is troubling him".

She said he would not find out the result of his HIV test until Friday, and has had the worry of the outcome hanging over him.

"It is his own fault, if he had not committed this offence he would not have placed himself in this position."

She said that he started using cannabis at the age of nine and was drinking heavily at the age of 11. He became addicted to ecstasy and cocaine at 13 and was put in care the following year.

He has been trying to his family but they want nothing to do with him, she said, and he will now be away from his partner and their young daughter, as well as his two other older daughters from previous relationships.

A 29-year-old man, Stanley Bestman, on Wednesday appeared before an Abuja Magistrates’ Court for allegedly attempting to rape a woman, Naomi Haruna, on her farm.
The accused, who is of no fixed address, was charged for criminal assault and criminal force with intent to rape Haruna at Daki-Biyu village, Jabi, Abuja on Aug. 30.
The police prosecutor, l. Simon Emmanuel, alleged that Haruna was working on her farm with a baby strapped on her back when the accused suddenly emerged from the bush.
He said that the accused then grabbed her and pushed her to the ground and forced his finger into her private part with the intention to rape her.
Emmanuel further alleged that the accused ran way when the victim raised an alarm which attracted the attention of people who came to the scene of the alleged crime.
The prosecutor said the accused was subsequently trailed and apprehended by neighbouring farmers who took him to the Life Camp Police Station.
The accused, however, pleaded not guilty when Magistrate Idaiyat Akanni took his plea.
Akanni itted the accused to bail in the sum of N100,000 with two reliable sureties.
She ordered that the sureties must be resident within the court’s jurisdiction and one of them must be a civil servant not below Grade Level 7.
The Magistrate adjourned the case to Sept. 20 for hearing.

The  Imo State Government and the Catholic Archdiocese of Owerri are now on warpath  following the legalization of abortion in the state.  Consequently, the Archbishop of the Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Anthony Obinna has demanded that the two obnoxious law containing the anti-life legislation said to have been signed into law by both Governor Rochas Okorocha and his predecessor Chief Achike Udenwa in 2012 and 2007 respectively be repealed.

Addressing newsmen in Owerri, on the forthcoming 2013 Odenigbo Lecture of the Diocese, Dr. Obinna regretted that in spite of the public outcry and pleas to the State House of Assembly not to the evil law legalizing abortion in 2010, Governor Okorocha quietly signed the bill as Imo State Law No 12 which he said contains the obnoxious lethal legislation on the 29th of May 2012 and thus coinciding with Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

The law, the bishop lamented, now threatens many conceived unborn children in the state with death.

The Catholic prelate also slammed ex-Governor Achike Udenwa for equally g on 25th May 2007 “the gender and Equal Opportunity Law 2007 No 7” which he said, equally legalized abortion without considering the right of the unborn child.

“Since abortion is a murder of the helpless child, we as a God-fearing people in Imo State cannot stand by and allow this law to rampage our society in the name of  Women’s Reproductive and Gender Rights,” he warned.

While calling for the immediate repealing of the two abortion laws in the state, the Archbishop said that  although the church will not be mired in the nation’s murky waters of partisan politics, it will continue to demonstrate interest in the nation’s democratic process for the common good of the  people.

However, most people in the state have expressed the fear that the law did not only legalize abortion and prostitution  but may have also legalized the trafficking in human embryo as section 38(h)  and (I)of the legislation  seem to suggest.

The Catholic Medical Practitioners who were the first to speak vehemently against the law slammed the state legislators for ing such an obnoxious and inhuman law which has not only given license for promiscuity but has inadvertently sanctioned murder of unborn babies in the state, as well as encourages the trafficking of ovarian eggs in the state.

According to Dr Philip Njamanze, president of the association, considering the contents of the law as ed by the state legislators implies that a woman is entitled to have an abortion even at the ninth month no matter how she conceived it.

He noted that the section which gives the right to every woman to take decisions about her health needs and requirements implies that abortion has been legalized and operational in the state, irrespective of how the pregnancy was conceived.

No fewer than 24 youth volunteers popularly known as Civilian JTF were killed yesterday when Boko Haram insurgents ambushed the vigilance group in Monguno, northern Borno. Sources also said many of the volunteers are still missing.

A police source hinted that the tragic incident occurred following a counter insurgency mission embarked upon by the Civilian JTF in Boko Haram camps around Kaleri, Shuwari, Maganari and Nannari villages in the Monguno Local Government Area. But the mission took a sad turn when the insurgents in a military vehicle ambushed the youths.

“The vigilante youths numbering over 100 were on a mission to smoke out some Boko Haram men but they were ambushed by the insurgents. About 24 people may have died while about 36 were still missing.

“There was an initial arrangement with military troops that they will accompany the vigilante youths to the Boko Haram camps but the youths had to leave after endless waiting. Because the military did not surface, they moved to Monguno in a  convoy of about five vehicles but the armed Boko Haram who disguised in army camouflage and a captured military patrol  confused the vigilante youths to think they were  military troops. They just opened fire on the young men while many others fled,” one of the volunteers who could not make the trip to Monguno disclosed in Maiduguri.

Spokesman of the defunct t Task Force (JTF), Lt Col Sagir Musa and the Police Public Relations (PPRO), Jibril Gideon could not be reached as at press time.

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Jigawa has arrested a 25-year-old woman for allegedly dumping her new born baby girl in a graveyard in Kazaure Local Government.

The NSCDC commandant in the state, Mr Muhammad Gidado, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Dutse that the suspect was arrested on Friday at Ilallah quarters in Kazaure town.
Gidado said the woman, who was a housemaid in the area, was arrested after the corps conducted a thorough investigation among divorcees, widows, housemaids and prostitutes living in the area.

“We were able to identify and arrest the mother of the baby girl that was abandoned at grave yard after conducting thorough investigation among divorcees, widows, house maids and prostitutes living in the area,” Gidado said.
He said a medical examination at the General Hospital at Hadejia revealed that the suspect was the biological mother of the baby.

“She also confessed to being the mother, as well as dumping the baby.”
The commandant said the suspect alleged that she was impregnated by one Alhaji Haruna of Makara-Huta quarters in the same town.

The baby was discovered and rescued by men of the NSCDC while on patrol in the area on Aug. 27 when they were attracted to the scene by the cry of the baby.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN) has offered provisional ission to 2,691 UTME candidates who made the institution their first choice in the last t ission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) examination.

The UNN Registrar, A.I. Okonta who released the result at the weekend said the successful candidates will pursue various first degree programmes in the 15 faculties of the university for the 2013/2014 academic session.

He advised the successful candidates to visit the university website at www.unn.edu.ng or its portal, www.portal.unn.edu.ng to confirm their acceptance of the provisional ission.

Okonta also advised interested 2013/2014 UTME candidates who have not been offered ission but had a UTME score of 180 or above and the UNN P-UTME score of 180 or above to apply for the institution’s d courses.
