Overtime, a typical Nigerian politician is said to be unstable in his political affiliations and interests. Today he is here, tomorrow there. As they say, “ In politics, they are no permanent enemies, but permanent interest.”

Yesterday, the spokesperson of Alh. Atiku Abubakar, the Presidential Candidate of the 2023 General Elections in person of Barr. Daniel Bwala paid a courtesy visit to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the presidential villa, Abuja. The opposition party chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party during his visit to the president said he is committed to ing the istration of President Bola Tinubu, even if that required him to defect to the All Progressives Congress. He further said, “ I am committing to play my part to your istration, and I have no apologies to anybody.

Prior to this visit, Barr. Bwala is known for being a staunch critic of the APC government led by President Tinubu. In one of his interviews late December, 2023, Barr. Bwala was quoted to have said “ Even if you give Tinubu 30 years, nothing will work”. One may start to wonder what changed. Why the sudden change of mind? These and many more questions surround the minds of well-meaning Nigerians as to whether a typical Nigerian politician has integrity or not.

Anyways, let's see where this leads us.

The recent suspension of Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Dr. Betta Edu is one too many of top federal government appointees from Cross River State origin disgracefully suspended or removed from office as a result of corruption allegations or misconduct in time past.

Recall that in 2017, Rtrd. Justice Walter Onnoghen, the then Chief Justice of the Supreme Court was suspended and later removed from office by the then President Buhari after a petition was filed by the civil rights group at the Code of Conduct Bureau (CCB) alleging that he owns sundry s primarily funded through cash deposits made by himself.

Again, in 2019, the then Head of Service of the Federation (HoSF), Mrs. Winifred Oyo Ita was prematurely retired from service over corruption allegations, prosecuted along with others before a judge for money laundering involving about N570million.

Yet again, Barr. Okoi Obono-Obla, a former Senior Special Assistant to President Buhari on Prosecutions was relieved of his duties as a result of alleged certificate forgery in 2021.

The climax of these disgraceful incidents happened yesterday when the Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation Minister, Dr. Betta Edu was suspended by President Tinubu over alleged diversion of more than 585 million naira of public funds into a personal bank .

One may begin to wonder whether these inauspicious happenings are mere coincidences or politically masterminded due to the geo-political minority status of Cross River State. However, be it as it may, stakeholders from the state should have a roundtable discussion in order to forestall future occurrences.

May Cross River State succeed!

Our Tertiary Education prepare graduates to seek employment after graduation from school, and not as entrepreneurs. Hence, the high rate of unemployment in the Nigerian society.

Going forward, a smart graduate should apply the knowledge he/she gathered from college to solve problems in the society, thereby making a living from it. Do not confine yourself into the belief that you must be employed by that company, organization or ministry. Determine to be a problem solver, not necessarily being part of the society's problem.

Be the employer and not the employee!

PRESIDENT TINUBU SEEKS EXPEDITED PACE OF PROGRESS IN DIALOGUE AS ISLAMIC ULAMAS PREPARE TO CONTINUE TALKS WITH MILITARY JUNTA

The Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Tinubu has implored a delegation of Islamic scholars (Ulamas), who were previously engaged in discussions to facilitate the restoration of constitutional democratic governance in Niger Republic, to expedite progress in their ongoing dialogue with the military junta.

The President received a comprehensive briefing on Thursday at the State House in Abuja, from the Ulamas, who were led into the meeting by Sheikh Bala Lau.

The briefing followed the Ulamas' two most recent visits to Niger Republic.

The Islamic leaders had informed the President that the military junta was open to deepening dialogue with ECOWAS as more steps are being taken to forestall armed conflict with a more detailed acceptance of the ECOWAS position by Niger military council officials.

Responding to the delegation of Ulamas, against the backdrop of ethnic rumours peddled by domestic political figures inside and outside of the country, President Tinubu emphasized that he is at the forefront of a peaceful resolution of the crisis, even in the midst of more hawkish individuals urging swifter intervention.

"I am managing a very serious situation. If you take ECOWAS aside, other people will react, those who are outside of our control. I am the one holding those sides back. I am the one holding back ECOWAS," he disclosed.

Addressing the urgency of the situation, the president added:

''Even as of this morning, I have been inundated with phone calls on the readiness of countries with their military force and contributions. However, I told them to wait. I am meeting with the Ulamas and I will get back to you."

President Tinubu told the Islamic delegation that the military junta must be held able for putting the entire people of Niger Republic in jeopardy.

''They cannot use the gun given to them to protect the sovereignty of the country and turn it against the people of the country," he said.

President Tinubu pledged that ECOWAS will remain steadfast in its commitment to diplomatically engage with all stakeholders and seek a peaceful resolution to the ime in Niger Republic.

"I will draw a line in the sand and ask you to make arrangements to go back to Niger Republic," he stated.

On the request by the Islamic scholars for the Federal Government to monitor the distribution of palliatives to States, the President promised that more palliatives are coming for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) nationwide.

He also appealed to State governments to ensure transparency and ability in the distribution and management of these palliatives.

"The people reside in the States. Even if I set up a , I will have to go through the governors and the local governments. We will continue to talk to the governors. Nigerians must hold them able," he continued.

"It’s unheard of that in a constitutional democracy; a president will sit here and give orders to States. I can only appeal to them to implement. The people reside in the states, and if the Governor is not doing well, the people must vote them out," he concluded.

STATE HOUSE PRESS RELEASE!

President Bola Tinubu on Monday charged the 45 newly inaugurated Ministers of the Federal Republic to prioritize the interests and welfare of the entire nation and its diverse population, above any regional or state-specific considerations.

Speaking at the inauguration of new of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) at the State House Conference Centre, the President underscored the immense responsibility the ministers now bear in shaping policies that will significantly influence the lives of hundreds of millions of Nigerians.

"You are not a minister of a particular state, colony, region, or ethnic nationality. You are a minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," President Tinubu declared, setting the tone for his directive to the new ministers.

"This is all about the cohesion and work of a great team, and I believe we now have it. It is an honour to be chosen to serve as a minister in the Federal Executive Council, and such a high honour comes with tremendous responsibility. In this moment of abundant promise and peril in equal measure, all of you that have been sworn in have been called to distinguish yourselves. Nigerians are highly expectant of excellence in service delivery, ability, and transparency," he said.

The President also reminded the new ministers that they can not disappoint Nigerians, who expect them to serve with integrity, dignity and competence to actualize the Renewed Hope manifesto of the istration—failing which he will not hesitate to take necessary remedial measures.

"As your country honours you today, you must each work to make yourselves worthy in the eyes of God and our entire nation’s people. Your highest obligation is to restore public faith in government so that our people can once again believe that government can be a positive force for transformation and a vehicle for collective progress of all citizens of this great country," President Tinubu said, while congratulating each of the ministers and welcoming them to "the istration of Renewed Hope."

He further affirmed that the newly appointed ministers were selected based on their track records of excellence in both the public and private sectors, noting their effective representation of the rich diversity present within Nigeria.

Expressing his wishes for the success of the cabinet in the discharge of their duties, the President invoked a metaphor of a journey, in which he is the driver of a vehicle, along with all Nigerians as engers.

"In this new assignment, we are in this boat together, even if it is a vehicle, I am the driver. The entire nation sits watchful, as you and I navigate this vehicle. We must hold each other responsible. We have to do the job to meet the expectations of all Nigerians. God be with you, and God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria."

The social media has recently gone agog as to who this ravishingly cute guy is. He has arguably taken over the place of other cute nollywood actors like IK Ogbonna, Maurice Sam, Alex Cross, among others, and have the ladies droll over his handsomeness.

Chidi Dike was born on the 29th of June, 1990. He hails from the eastern region of Nigeria. Chidi completed his early education where he grew up with his parents in Lagos, Nigeria. He began his career as an actor a few years ago and has become a well-known character in the Nigerian entertainment industry after starring in blockbuster movies like “I Will Wait For You”, “A Touch of You”, “Agony of Trust”, and the newest one which is “Better Half”, a movie produced by ace actor and producer, Ruth Kadiri which has amassed a whooping 7 million views on YouTube in just about 14 days of release. Chidi has appeared in several Nigerian Nollywood movies and has worked with a lot of top celebrities, including Ruth Kadiri, Uche Nwaefuna, Maurice Sam, Cynthia Okereke, Lizzy Gold, and Deza The Great.

Special commendation and applauds should be accorded to ace Producer, Ruth Kadiri who discovered and brought him into limelight.

We are watching out for more interesting movies from him.

The past general elections left me with valuable experiences that will be indelible in my mind for the longest of time. The presidential election was where my interest lied, because the presidency and ofcourse the federal government is the life-wire of the country's development and progress. Who we chose or elected was vital to the entire growth of the country.

H.E Peter Obi was my preferred choice as former President Buhari's successor, not because of religious or tribal sentiments, but because I felt he was the best man for the job; bearing in mind the hardship and woes the APC has inflicted on Nigerian, as well as a lesser evil compared to other candidates who contested against him.

The outcome of the election was not what most Nigerians, especially the youths expected as Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu was declared winner of the 2023 presidential election. Some said the election was rigged in favour of the APC being the rulling party, while others said he really won the election as results reflected the wish of teeming Nigerians. Other quarters of the country believed that H.E Peter Obi actually won the election. Although, the court is yet to decide who the true winner of the 2023 Presidential Election is as the case is still being deliberated at the Presidential Election Petition Tribunal (PEPT).

H. E Bola Ahmed Tinubu has only been president for about 13 days, and we're beginning to see imperative and bold moves previous presidents could not make. From the subside removal to timely invention on matters of public interest. For the first time since I started following national politics, the president would have meetings with heads of government and agencies openly for the public to see and hear their deliberations and decision afterwards. With President Tinubu, no behind closed doors with Governors and others. Everything is made public for all to see.

According to a report released by StatiSense, Nigeria gained about +5.22% at the Nigeria Stock Exchange Market, the highest for a new president since 1999. With this momentum and positives, I think Nigerians should expect the best from his istration. Although, these are early days, but let's be optimistic and remain hopeful for a better and prosperous Nigeria for us all.

Uproar, criticism, condemnation and disapproval greeted the choice of Senator Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Presidential candidate of All Progressive Congress (APC) for the forthcoming General Elections. Sen. Tinubu on Sunday 10th July, 2022 announced on his verified social media platforms that he had chosen Sen. Kashim Ibrahim Shettima, a former Governor of Boko Haram ravaged Borno State as his running mate. This bold step by Sen. Tinubu came as a huge surprise to Nigerians, especially the Christian population who did not expect such an unusual pairing.

Nigeria is a heterogeneously diverse nation, which reflects on our collective beliefs, culture, traditions and customs. Nigeria consists of two predominant religions; Christianity and Islam. Since the advent of democratic dispensations in 1999, it’s been a conventional rule for political parties, especially the ruling party to present a balanced ticket of Christian/Muslim or Muslim/Christian Presidential Candidates as it was the case with Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo/Alh. Atiku Abubakar in 1999-2007, Alh. Umaru Musa Ya’adua/Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan in 2007-2010, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan/Arc. Namadi Sambo in 2010-2015, and Gen. Muhammadu Buhari/Prof. Yemi Osinbajo from 2015 respectively. These pairings have overtime fostered national unity, development and peace as it went further to suppress chances of regional agitations and perceived marginalization from either the Christian or Islamic population, as both religions are seemingly carried along. Many Nigerians, especially Christians had expected before the various party primaries were conducted that the next President would be a southern Christian since we already have a Northern Muslim as President. But the whole permutations changed when Sen. Tinubu, a southern Muslim emerged as the candidate of the APC. Although, it was expected that his vice would be a northern Christian to balance the ticket as a common convention in our political space; shockingly, he chose a fellow Muslim to deputize him.

It will be a missed opportunity and a great loss to the Christian voice should Sen. Tinubu emerge as the next President of Nigeria. Many Christians have questioned the relevance and importance of a Christian Vice to the Christian population since to them the office is ineffective and voiceless; especially in the wake of several attacks and killings Christians have suffered, yet their perceived representative is silent and obviously helpless to the plight and concerns of his brethren. Surprisingly, some Christians of high repute have come out to the decision of Sen. Tinubu to present a Muslim ruling mate, citing competence and political affiliation as their reasons against national unity and fairness. I wonder if there is no competent Christian from the north. Nevertheless, there are several benefits that come with being the “Number Two” citizen of the country, and as Christians, having one of us there is a plus. As the Vice President, he can exercise the powers of the President in his absence, he chairs the National Economic Council, he is a member of the National Security Council, he participates in all cabinet meetings and chairs in the absence of the President, the interest of Christians can easily be presented, represented and reflected on national programmes and policies, since we have a strong voice as part of the formulators and facilitators of policies and programmes. The Office of the Vice President comes with influence, contracts, and employment opportunities abound therein. And these opportunities can easily be accessed by Christians if one of us is there; as Galatians 6:10 says “As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith”. These and many more benefits may cease if one of us is not there. And the suspected Islamization Agenda can easily be achieved as they would be no opposing voice in the Executive Arm of Government. When issues of national security are discussed, who will speak for us? Do you know what it means for a particular religion to produce both President and Vice in Nigeria? Do you think they will discuss what will interest you at their own peril?

The 2023 General Election is nigh. The choice is yours, vote your conscience. If you do not have your Permanent Voter’s Card (PVC) yet, go get it now.

God bless Nigeria!

The Calabar Urban Development Authority (CUDA) is saddled with among other duties the responsibility of keeping the Cross River State Capital - Calabar clean and green at all times. This is made possible by a group of hard-working, committed and ionate individuals who are hired to ensure that Calabar is of-course made the cleanest and greenest Capital City in Nigeria, a feat the state is famous for in a long time now.

Sadly, on Wednesday, 20th October, 2021, a group of Calabar Streets Sweepers consisting of mostly women stormed the streets of Calabar in protest against the failure of Government to pay them their monthly remunerations of N7,500, spanning for half a dozen months. This action sparked public outcry, emotions, empathy and condemnation of Government's cruel manner of handling the people who daily ensure that Calabar is clean and beautiful for residents to live, and for tourists to visit.

According to information at my disposal, funds allocated for their payment were long disbursed to their superiors, yet these funds are hoarded. This is the height of wickedness, callousness and inhumanity metted on these old and helpless women in this harsh economic situation bedeviling the country. And the people responsible for this evil act are those whose salaries and allowances are promptly paid as at when due, yet fail to pay others their remunerations. The truth is, this is one too many of similar situations happening in the public sector yet to be brought to the public eyes.

However, I blame all the arms of government for failing to perform their constitutional duties of checks and balances. This is not just about the Governor, the Legislature and the Judiciary should also be held responsible for their inaction in matters under their purview. The Executive is particularly inexcusable in this matter. If she had lived up to her responsibilities, this shameful incident would not have occured. The Commissioner for Environment and other relevant agencies should be summoned and questioned immediately. We cannot not continue in this manner.

The Government should be held able for their actions and inactions. If we must criticise the Government, we should do so constructively and unbias. The Local Government Councillors, Chairmen, State House of Assembly and the Federal House of Representatives , Senators, the Governor and Ministers must all work together, regardless of theirs political affiliations to ensure a better and blessed Cross River State of your dreams.

Politics is a game of shared interest, , idealogy, determination and unity. Without these and more, political success is almost impossible. The youths overtime have agitated to be given the chance to taste leadership and hold sensitive political and elective positions in the country. However, their chances seem to be restricted by their respective political leaders who have clinged to power for almost eternity without any obvious signs of relinquishing same to the younger generation.

In April, 2018, the Nigeria's Senate resolved to transmit the “Not Too Young To Run” bill to the President of Nigeria. On May 21, 2018, 55 youth-led organizations gave President Buhari an 8-day ultimatum to assent to the bill. On 29 May 2018, Nigeria's President Buhari announced in his Democracy Day National Address that he planned to sign the bill into law. He subsequently signed the bill on the 31st of May 2018. On May 31, 2018. And this cheering news happened a few months before the 2019 General Elections.

Subsequently, as expected, a good number of youths declared their interest to run for their respective and desired political offices, even for the seat of the President; notable names included Mr. Omoyele Sowore, Mr. Fela Durotoye amongst others for the Presidency. In my dear State: Cross River, some caricatures cum aspirants sprung out for Governorship, Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly, but these same “Youth Aspirants" along the line ended up declaring their and loyalty to these same old politicians without a fight or recourse to their own little ers who in the end got disappointed and never took them serious anymore.

Taking-over is a not child's play. It is not what is achieved by mere talk. What have you put in place to takeover? Do you think it's that easy to takeover from people who have been in the corridors of power for more than two decades without proper planning and strategies? The 2023 General Elections is around the corner, and it's still not clear whether the youths are ready to takeover from the “Robert Mubabes and Paul Biyas" of Nigeria. All I hear and read all over the social media is the annoying phrase “We Move”, move to where? You move to unending followership, slavery and loyalty that will only end in political appointments or perhaps a job with a paltry salary structure without a clear-cut interest, willpower and the self-determination to takeover?

Although, I have been able to identify some critical factors inimical to this infinite political dominance by our leaders which include: low finances, lack of a formidable and determined youth structure, connection at the state or national level which obviously are controlled by these same old political leaders. Unless these men decide to relinquish power(which I don't see happening any time soon), It would be almost impossible for the youths to takeover higher elective positions in the country.

Conclusively, power is taken, not given. I strongly advise the youths in the country, especially in Cross River State to come together, unite, chant one course and form a very strong and powerful youth political structure filled with the best brains, determined and focused to drive the “takeover mantra" to success. There, they will strategize, plan and gather resources to promote and their own candidates who will not only aspire but contest for elective positions such as Chairmanship, House of Representatives, Senate, Governorship and even the Presidency. The truth is, these men need the youths to succeed, without them, their political relevance will be relegated overtime. Unity and determination is key to achieving this goal. Together, a better Nigeria is possible.

Over the previous weeks and still counting, the Cross River State political sphere has been kept busy as a result of the defection of Governor Benedict Ayade to the national ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC). This move has caused serious political tension in the state, even as the 2023 General Elections draw closer. Some have followed the bold steps of the Governor by dumping the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the him in his new party All Progressives Congress (APC). And those who have refused to follow him in some quarters are regarded as "men of integrity", and others regarded as "hungry bootlickers" seeking financial benefits.

Howbeit, the question of loyalty comes in. What's is loyalty? Loyalty according to the English Dictionary is "faithfulness or devotion to some person, cause or nation." In politics, loyalty is one of the prerequisites to a successful political career. And this loyalty is tested when situations like defection among others set in. And one may ask, should followers be loyal to their political leaders or the political parties they belong at the time been? I guess the answer is relative. But, loyalty should be to a political party first, then to an individual politician. Because it is the Party that constitutionally gives one an elective office or position. Without a political party, there is no political leader.

Politics is a game of interest, and no one belongs to a place (party) where his political ambitions will not be achieved or sustained in a long run. I stand to be corrected, but I think there is no political figure in Cross River State that has remained in one Political Party since 1999 till date. Do not only celebrate those who refused to defect with their leaders, but criticize those who left. Both serve the same purpose; loyalty. The formers' loyalty lies to the party and the latter's to an individual, all in the name of interest. Let's learn to respect others decisions and actions provided it's legal. We should not regard ourselves as enemies because of our deviance in interest, ideas, decisions and ambitions. In politics, there are no permanent enemies, but permanent interests.

The provision of electricity for the citizens of any given country among other social amenities is a sole responsibility the Government owes her people. The availability of electricity is very essential to driving socio-economic growth, investment and rapid development in any society, and must be provided in areas where necessary. However, it has become a “normal" that the Government has failed to live up to her expectation in this area, and as a result, small, medium and large business establishments have continued to suffer serious setback in their respective busineses' growth.

Iyamitet is a community in Obubra Local Government Area of Cross River State. This community is one of the fastest growing communities in Cross River State in of socio-economic growth and infrastructural development. Iyamitet produces hundreds and thousand tons of cocoa yearly, and other agricultural produce, as well as the availability of some precious stones where mining takes place to generate revenue for the Government.

In 2007, during the early days of His Excellency Sen. Liyel Imoke's istration, the then Governor of Cross River State, a contract was awarded for the provision of electricity in Iyamitet Community from the Iyamoyong Community in Obubra Local Government Area, Cross River State. This development was welcomed with excitement and satisfaction, with the impression that it was a sign of many good things to come from the Government into the community.

Truly, the project was executed to about 80% completion level, with the provision and mounting of transformers at strategic points. Sadly, it's exactly 14 years and still counting, the project is yet to be completed. The Iyamitet Community is still in almost pepertual darkness. And only God knows how long this unfortunate situation will continue. The poles and wires have long fallen to the ground, with the transformers all damaged and some of its vital components stolen.

Therefore, I call on relevant Government authorities to look into this situation, and proffer immediate solution; especially the Governor of Cross River State, Senator, Central Senatorial District, Member Representing Obubra/Etung Federal Constituency, Member Representing Adun/Okum in the Cross River State House of Assembly, The Chairman of Obubra Local Government Council among others should please come to their rescue.

The media profession is a noble one, and as a result of its nobility, the profession must house individuals who are properly trained professionally to execute the three cardinal objectives of journalism or broadcasting which are “education", “information" and “entertainment." Any other practice devoid of the aforementioned, is completely unprofessional.

It is very unfortunate to have keenly observed and noticed the continued and overt social media rift, rivalry, bitterness and mockery of supposed media practitioners against one another in the Calabar Social Media Space. Although, I'm not surprised, because that is what you see in a profession where untrained individuals now parade themselves as Media Practitioners without the helpful knowlege of the tenets of the journalism practice.

Furthermore, it is very paramount to know that as Media Practitioners, you are expected to lead while others follow in the areas of good conduct, promotion of peaceful coexistence between one another and ensuring that the objectives of journalism are upheld. We don't need Journalists or media aids in Calabar or Cross River State at large who derive pleasure in ridiculing one another, and as a result deviating from their core responsibilities; or media practitioners whose journalistic exploits and achievements are only limited to promoting or singing praises for one politician or the other instead of focusing on the core values of the journalism profession. Instead of fighting one another, why not channel that same energy into playing the “Watch Dog” role of the media, in order to keep the Government of the day at her toes.

In conclusion, the essence of this piece is to onish all media Practitioners in Calabar or Cross River State at large to imbibe the spirit of oneness, see each other as colleagues, rather than rivals in the business. And the earlier this advice is taken seriously, the better for us all. Let's not allow political differences affect our common culture of peace. And together, we will live in harmony for the envy of many in other parts of the country.

A transcript or an academic transcript is an authentic and detailed documentation of a student's permanent academic records which usually means all courses taken, grades and honours received, and degree(s) conferred on the student. A transcript is also a proof of education one received from a particular institution.

Unfortunately, as important as this document is to an alumnus of any given institution, some institutions of learning still indirectly deny her students of it. The University of Calabar is not left out where most of her alumni have endured a hectic and delayed receipt of this invaluable document; especially those who desire post graduate education. Interactions with some of these alumni did not speak well of the Transcript Unit in the University of Calabar where they are often times frustrated when attempts are made to get their transcript document.

Sadly, the situation is not the same in other advanced and respected Universities in Nigeria, especially University of Ibadan(UI). And one may begin to wonder why the University of Calabar is arguably adjudged a digital university, yet has not followed the footsteps of other universities in Nigeria where the process is conveniently and completely done online.

I other alumni of the University of Calabar to call on relevant authorities in the University of Calabar to as a matter of utmost necessity look into this protracted ordeal, and possibly profer solutions to it.

The newly inaugurated Vice Chancellor of University of Calabar, Prof. Florence Obi should take up this matter as her first major assignment as Vice Chancellor which would certainly become a great achievement if addressed immediately, because the complaints are too numerous to ignore. And also see to it that the ICT Unit of the institution comes up with modalities of making the process completely online.

NIGERIA @ 60: SHOULD WE CELEBRATE OR WEEP?

BY

EDIM M. EDIM
1/10/2020

Nigeria is a nation blessed with enormous natural and human resources of which several countries of the world covet and wish they had these resources at their disposal in order to foster development in their respective countries. However, it is rather unfortunate to assert that Nigeria is still pitiably found among the leagues of underdeveloped Nations of the world even in the midst of all these resources and endowments found in her environment.

In 1st October, 1960 the Nigerian territory which was colonized and ofcourse under the rule of the British Government was granted Independence. The declaration of Independence caused frenzy celebration across the Nigerian territory over what some said was a dawn of a new era of massive development and progress for Nigerians. Arguably, Nigerians are yet to satisfactorily feel the development and progress they have eagerly anticipated for so long. This is a country that was plagued by successive military coups and dictatorship which spanned for several years before perhaps her final return to democratic rule in exactly two decades now. According to those who experienced these military regimes, some say Nigeria witnessed reasonable development and progress amidst brutality and cruelty, while others varied to say it was the worst thing to had happened to Nigeria. Although, those against the military governments had clamoured for a democratic government in order for Nigeria to also experience remarkable development and progress like other democracies of the world. As expected, their agitation was granted afterall by the then Military Head of State Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar. Hence, Nigeria's final return to democratic rule in the year 1999.

Subsequent upon this new development of a change in government from Military to Civilian Rule, Nigerians were very much optimistic of massive development and progress this time in every sector of the economy. But the question is " have Nigerians truly experienced this development and progress?" I guess the answer is "No" based on my opinion. Unfortunately, Nigerians have endured successive poor civilian istrations over the years and still counting, plagued by increasing rate of corruption, insecurity, harsh economic situation, unemployment among others. And we wonder when all that would end.

Sadly, Nigeria is 60 years old today by reason of Independence. And I ask, "Should We Celebrate or Weep?" I believe the general answer will be the latter, based on the present situation in our hands. Nigerians cannot afford celebrate her Independence Day in the midst of a seemingly failed State marred by unbearable insecurity in the country where even Chief Security Officers are now easily attacked, high level of corruption, unemployment, high cost of living and rise in cost of food where a bag of rice is now sold for about N31,000. Others are hike in the cost of fuel and electricity tarrif, low foreign reserve, high debt situation among others. And one would wonder where Nigeria is headed to; whether we are progressing or retrogressing? Meanwhile, other saner countries of the world mark their Independence Day Celebrations with incredible development, progress and attainment of new feats, whereas in Nigeria, the reverse is the case. Nigeria is in a pathetic situation that needs urgent intervention, if not things will deteriorate beyond remedy. I weep for Nigeria. Only God Almighty can help us.

Recommendably, as we mark yet another bitter Independence Day anniversary, let's reflect on our failures, even as those in position of authority, be it government or the private sector should go back to the drawing board, rewrite their wrongs to right, and credibly implement all her progressive policies and blueprints in order to make Nigeria a better place for us all. Nigeria is not completely wrecked, let's not lose hope. Something can still be done to help salvage her. The youths should rise up to the challenge and swing into reasonable and positive actions, hands with every relevant sector and make Nigeria of our dreams a reality. A new Nigeria is possible.

Happy Independence Day!

Long Live The Federal Republic of Nigeria!

God bless Nigeria!

Magnets of Success
By
Edim m. EDIM
15/5/2020

Success is something which happens as a consequence. Or an achievement of one's aim or goals. For an individual to declare that he/she has experienced success, it means an effort has paid off. Success requires target goals which are set to be achieved either in a short or long term basis.

Interestingly, success is arguably the most used word both in written and spoken forms by normal humans today and probably before time began. This expression - success never lacks in the lips of those who desire to experience it in their pecuilar life's endeavours. Every normal and reasonable individual living in this challenging world eagerly desires to experience success at all cost. Some even to the extend of obsession. A magnet is a piece of material that attracts some metallic objects.

However, magnets of success implies the qualities, characteristics or actions expected from an individual to experience unwavering success. I strongly believe that everyone keenly desires to succeed, but do you know what is required to experience success? Well, the following amongst other qualities are required:
Goals: A goal is a result that one is attempting to achieve. Your goals are your aims. You must have a goal in order to anticipate success.
Courage: Courage is the quality of a confident character not to be afraid or intimidated easily but without being incautious or inconsiderate. Be determined to succeed. Don't let failure cause you to frail.
Loyalty: Loyalty is a state of being faithful or devoted to someone, cause or nation. A man who lacks loyalty may experience little or no suucess. Because success is not a “one man" affair, it requires the help of one or more people to collectively achieve it. True loyalty enables one to access unhindered success.
Hardwork: A lazy individual cannot experience true and sustainable success. You must be hardworking in order to succeed. Most unsuccessful men you see today are products of laziness. In as much as hardwork is necessary, being smart is key too.
Sincerity: Sincerity is the quality of being honest, freedom from simulation, hypocrisy and false pretence. When you are sincere in what you do, success is definitely inevitable. Sincerity is key to achieving true and great success.
Knowledge/Skills: Knowledge is the fact of knowing about something: general, understanding or familiarity with a subject or place. Without knowledge, it is almost impossible to experience true and sustainable succes. You must know something to be able to do something. Knowledge and skills work hand in hand. A skill is the capacity to do something well; technique and ability. Knowledge and skills are usually acquired or learned as opposed to abilities which are often thought of as innate.
Generosity: This is the trait of being willing to donate more and/or time. A stingy individual cannot experience success. When you find it difficult to give, success will definitely elude you because it is only when you give, that you receive.
Humility: Humility is the characteristics of being humble in character and behavior. A proud individual cannot experience success in any way. Because you will be detested by people. People will not be comfortable working for/with you.
Discipline: Discipline is a controlled behavior, self-control, or a systematic method of obtaining obedience. It takes true discipline to attract success in all areas of life.
Wisdom: Wisdom is a personal character that enables one to distinguish the wise from the unwise. To succeed, you must be wise in your decisions because wrong decisions must surely lead to failure.

Theodore Roosevelt says “Do What You Can With All You Have, Wherever You Are.” A true optimist or one who desires to succeed believes in the value of always giving his all, no matter what he has or where he finds himself. These and other helpful qualities I could not mention above are invaluable for unwavering and all-round success.

THE REALITY OF PREDESTINATION
BY
EDIM M. EDIM
23/4/2020

“Man Know Thyself” is a famous philosophical expression or quote by Socrates, one of the greatest philosophers who ever lived. This quote has provoked many reasonable people to swing into actions in order to ascertain or determine who they really are, and the reason(s) for their existence here on earth. It indicates that man must stand and live according to his nature or destiny. Man has to look at his life and examine it.

Predestination is a theological doctrine which says everything has been foreordained by God or by fate. It means that God freely chooses some people to be the special object of His grace and by this receive eternal salvation. Also simply put, “Pre” meaning “before” and “destination” meaning “point of final arrival”. To predestine something is to determine beforehand where it will end up. That is, one's purpose in life.

Honestly, every man here on earth arguable lives according to his destiny. And as a matter of fact, every life's event unfolds based on how it has been predestined. Have you ever wondered why some people with little or no effort experience unprecedented success, while others struggle with little or no success? Obviously, it shows that the former has been predestined to succeed, while the latter continues to struggle without reasonable success.

The Holy Bible cited some cases of predestination: Prophet “Jeremiah" in Jeremiah 1:5 KJV, “Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.", “Abraham” in Genesis 17:4 KJV, “As for me, behold, my covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be a father of many nations.", and “Mary” in Luke 1:28, 30-31 KJV, “And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. And the angel said unto her, Fear not, Mary: for thou hast found favour with God. And, behold, thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a son, and shalt call his name JESUS.”

Consequently, the names mentioned above among others were not the only persons in existence in their time, but they were however predestined to become who they were through God's plan or fate. That is why there is a popular saying that “destiny can be delayed, but ccannot be denied.” People live and act based on their destiny here on earth. Some were created to be “good men", while others, “evil men”, some “poor" while others “rich”. Although, there are cases in the bible were some people changed their destiny. Especially the famous case of Jabez in 1 Chronicles 4:9-10. But, that pupported change of destiny was arguably part of his predestination.

Controversially, people's misfortune, stubbornness, sinfulness, good-fortune, success in all ramifications, salvation, mercy and grace, and even those who will die in accidents, and those who will survive these accidents are all a part of predestination. Because in Exodus 8:19, God hardened the heart of King “Pharaoh" in order to destroy him. And “Pharaoh's" stubbornness caused by God later led to his death. The question one should ask his/herself is, what is my destiny? Only God has the power to reveal one's destiny, whether good or bad. Just like in the cases of “Judas Iscariot” in Matthew 17:22, John 18:2(Jesus' Betrayal) “Peter" in Matthew 26:34, 75(denied Jesus) and “Samuel" in 1 Samuel 3:20-21 where he was predestined to be a prophet to Israelites.

The earlier one knows his destiny, the better for him. Because the bible says in Daniel 2:22,28 that He(God) reveals the deep and secret things of this world, He is the Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the end( Revelation 1:cool. And in Jeremiah 29:11, the bible also says “For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, saith the Lord , thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end." Inquire and ask God for the purpose of your existence, and you will fulfil your days happily here on earth.

Mother Tongue: Why It Should Be Encouraged In Nigeria

By

Edim M. Edim
21/02/2020

We live in a society where an individual's intelligence, exposure, level of education among other things is measured by his/her ability or competence in the use of English, French, Portuguese among other international languages. It is regrettably observed that our native languages have suffered serious negligence and relegation due to the utmost preference to international languages. Although, the knowledge and use of these languages have socio-economic benefits that cannot be overemphasized or overlooked. But there is need for our own native languages to be given the same attention and utmost priority.

The term "Mother Tongue" refers to a person's native language. That is, a language learned from birth. Also called a first language, dominant language, home language or native tongue. Contemporary linguists and educators commonly use the term L1 to refer to a first or native language (The Mother Tongue) and the term L2 to refer to a second language or a foreign language that is being studied or learnt.

Learning to speak in the mother tongue is very necessary for a child's overall development. Being fluent in the mother tongue, which is also known as the native language benefits the child in divers ways. It connects him/her to the culture and also eases communication in the home especially when surrounded by visitors.

It is estimated that over 400 languages are spoken in Nigeria with major languages like Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Efik/Ibibio among others. Language is the key to the heart of the people. Sadly, is it quite common to see young Nigerians who cannot have a simple correct conversation in their mother tongue. Most Nigerian parents, especially the educated ones prefer to expose their children to the use of foreign languages in their homes, schools and even in religious places. One is viewed as “local and untamed” when seen or heard speaking his native language. It is wrong!

Language is an integral part of one's culture, and if it is neglected as we do now, we lose it. Most of our native languages are dead and gone, while others are gradually going extinct because of the continuous negligence. Nigerians should rise up and tackle this issue quickly. If not, sooner or later, we may have no Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, Efik, Ibibio, Ejagham, Bekwara, Mbembe etc. to speak, and the future of our unborn children will be jeopardized.

The Federal Government as well as other levels of government should as a matter of urgency implement our dormant language policy; encouraging her citizens to use our indigenous languages both in spoken and written forms.
Your Mother Tongue is your pride and identity. Use it today.

Happy International Mother Tongue Day!
