On Tuesday morning, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) detained socialite and entrepreneur Aisha Achimugu at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja. Achimugu was placed on the wanted list by the EFCC in March and was apprehended shortly after landing from London at approximately 5 a.m. Facing charges of criminal conspiracy and money laundering, Achimugu had been ordered by the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday to report to the EFCC on Tuesday and then to appear in court on Wednesday, April 30, 2025. Her attorney, Chief Chikaosolu Ojukwu, verified her detention, saying, "Aisha Achimugu, who willingly returned to Nigeria from London, was taken into custody by the EFCC around 5 a.m. on Tuesday." Ojukwu criticized the EFCC for a breach of a court order. He added that his client had returned to Nigeria in line with her pledge to comply with the court's instructions and the EFCC's request, not anticipating her arrest upon arrival. In light of what transpired in court on Monday, my client returned based on the undertaking before the court to honour the EFCC's invitation but was arrested at the airport," he said. Ojukwu also revealed that Achimugu had started a hunger strike in protest, calling herself a "prisoner of conscience" due to the alleged breach of her fundamental rights. An anonymous source within the EFCC confirmed Achimugu's arrest. "We had earlier declared her wanted, but we can't allow her to continue to walk freely. Secondly, the court said she must appear before us today. We were not restricted from arresting her; the court said she should not be detained if she came. "How are you sure she would appear before us today? Now that we have seen her, we have a course to ensure she appears," the source stated. As of the time of this report, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale had not replied to questions regarding the detention. Resource-Rich Country Like Nigeria To Record Highest Increase In Poverty By 2027- World Bank The World Bank has issued a warning regarding Nigeria's anticipated increase in poverty levels by 2027, attributing this trend to the country's ongoing economic instability and heavy reliance on natural resources. According to the latest Africa Pulse report, released during the IMF/World Bank Spring Meetings in Washington, DC, Nigeria is projected to see a 3.6 percentage point rise in poverty over the next five years. The report paints a concerning picture, suggesting that while Nigeria may experience unexpected economic growth in late 2024, mainly driven by advancements in non-oil sectors, deeper underlying issues stemming from its resource-dependent economy and ongoing political unrest could result in more Nigerians falling into poverty. “Resource-rich and fragile countries like Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo are expected to record the highest increase in poverty, with the average rate in such countries reaching 46 percent by 2024,” the report said. READ ALSO: ECOWAS Plans Relocation From Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso Offices It was noted that countries rich in resources but facing instability, such as Nigeria and the Democratic Republic of Congo, are likely to experience the most significant increases in poverty. The average poverty rate in these nations is expected to reach 46 percent by 2024. In comparison, the report highlights that countries lacking abundant resources have made more considerable strides in reducing poverty, aided by rising agricultural commodity prices and improved governance structures. Nigeria, on the other hand, grapples with declining oil revenues and ineffective fiscal management. As of 2024, Sub-Saharan Africa is home to 80 percent of the world's impoverished population, with Nigeria alone contributing to half of that figure and three other nations. The report underscores the urgent need for comprehensive reforms in Nigeria’s fiscal policies and encourages greater engagement from citizens to cultivate a more inclusive and resilient economy. The High Court in Ikeja on Tuesday, April 15, dismissed the defamation case brought by the Falanas against internet commentator Martins Otse, also known as VeryDarkMan (VDM). Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Femi Falana, along with his son, Folarin, who is widely recognized as Falz, had initiated the defamation lawsuit against VDM following comments and a video he shared on September 24, 2024, across his social media channels. The Falanas had taken legal action against the defendant in separate lawsuits, seeking N500 million each in damages over a video he published on his social media that alleged they received N10 million from Idris Okuneye, also known as Bobrisky, to corrupt the course of justice. When the case was called on Tuesday, April 15, Falana, his son, and VDM were not in court. However, the respondent's attorney, Niyi Alagbe, who was standing in for Marvin Omorogbe, notified the court that he had submitted a motion for a stay of proceedings before Justice Fimisola Azeez. In response, the Falanas' attorney, Omotayo Olatunbosun, stated that he received the motion around 4:15 p.m. on the previous day. Olatunbosun argued that the matter scheduled for the day was the preliminary objection, which he considered ready for hearing, and that the new motion was intended to delay proceedings. He urged the judge to move forward with the day's agenda. Justice Matthias Dawodu remarked that the application was not part of the file. He questioned why he had to deal with the case when the main lawsuit was under the jurisdiction of another judge. Dawodu dismissed the case, concluding that insisting on pursuing the suit would be a theoretical exercise since the main lawsuit was with a different judge. "As a result, this suit is struck out," he stated. Read More: https://femotech.com.ng/2025/04/lagos-court-dismisses-femi-falana-falzs-n1-billion-defamation-suit-against-verydarkman/ 1 Share |

Drama in court as a serial house breaker /burglar standing trial on two separate cases changes clothes so as to conceal identity. There was a shock at an Abeokuta Magistrate Court on Friday, 28th February 2025, when an alleged serial house breaker, burglar, robber, and thief using two different names was standing trial for separate cases, changed clothes before appearing for a second trial in the same court and before the same Magistrate. The man is an ex-convict who has always been breaking into people's houses and stealing properties belonging to other people. The culprit, at times, robbed people in a lone and deserted street by snatching bags and mobile phones or, at times, pretending to the POS operator that he wanted to withdraw money, and he would forcefully hijack the POS operator's purse and run away with the cash. This culprit knows a lot about dealing with burglary, stealing, and robbing people since he shuttles his name between Yusuf Salako and Gbenga Salako. At times, he uses Yusuf Gbenga, and whenever he is arrested for another crime, he twists the name to Gbenga Salako. The pattern in which he usually breaks into or burgles people's houses is always the same. He mostly targets houses where the occupants are not around at the time of his evil act. He claimed to be a Transformer operator and electrician. So, whenever he broke into any house and could not see any tangible things such as a Laptop Computer, money, jewelry, electronics, or clothes to steal, he would vandalize electric wires and steal the wires and electrical accessories. The report states that he is well known to many law enforcement officials, including the Police and So-Safe Corps, and he is always being defended by the same lawyer at the Isabo Magistrate Court whenever he is arrested and brought to court. The incident leading to the drama on Friday happened when he was granted bail for an offense of Housebreaking and Stealing, which he committed at Afaja, off Olorunsogo Ọba road, sometime in 2024, and he is still standing trial on the case. He used the name Gbenga Salako in the case. His lawyer is said to have always been asking for adjournment, giving different excuses. Meanwhile, on 23rd February 2025, he was caught in action after breaking into a house at Diamond Estate behind Laderin Abeokuta and stealing 2 laptops, clothes, and money. He was arrested by NSCDC personnel with the help of the community people. He gave his name as Yusuf Salako and was charged to court. As faith would have it, the case was assigned to the same Court 4, where he had a pending case. He pleaded not guilty as usual, and he was granted bail. His regular lawyer has also always been asking for adjournment. On 28th March 2025, two different cases he is standing trial for were fixed for hearing. He made the appearance for the case in which he was charged to court by NSCDC using the name Yusuf Salako, and his lawyer asked for adjournment on 2nd April 2025. When another case was called in which he bears Gbenga Salako, everyone in the courtroom was shocked as he appeared wearing new clothes and trying to conceal his identity. Immediately he entered the box, his lawyer, in his usual manner, asked for adjournment again. At this point, the NSCDC prosecutor called the attention of the court to know that it was the same person charged to court by NSCDC, so the one who had dramatically changed clothes and appeared for another case using another name. The court then adjourned the case to 4th April definitely for trial. Falitatu Amidu and her daughter Ayisatu were sentenced by a magistrates' court in Isabo, Abeokuta, Ogun State, on Friday for stealing a large sack that included stock fish, dry ponmo, and dry cow meat worth N1 million that belonged to a woman named Mrs. Kafayat Alao. The defendants were found guilty of two counts of conspiracy and theft. They live in the Abeokuta, Ogun, neighbourhood at No. 21 Ago-oko. Insp. Kehinde Fawunmi, the police prosecutor, told the court that the defendants committed the crime in the Lafenwa market sometime in August 2024. According to Fawunmi, Falilatu Amidu used to assist the complainant in carrying her goods from her Lafenwa store to the location where she sells them. "She was asked to assist the complainant in selecting items from the store, but after waiting for more than an hour without seeing the defendant, she had to visit the store to see how she was doing," he said. When she arrived at the store, she failed to locate Falilatu and observed that a large bag that contained dried meat, ponmo, and stock fish was gone, and the defendant was not present. Falilatu grabbed the commodities and handed them to the daughter (Ayisatu) to sell, Fawunmi added. He claimed that despite being aware that the items were stolen, Ayisatu's mother gave them to her. However, the prosecution pointed out that the offence violated sections 516, 390(9), and 127 of the Ogun 2006 Criminal Code Laws. The Magistrate of the Abeokuta Magistrates' Court in Isabo, Mrs O.O. Odumosu, rendered her decision on Friday, concluding that the prosecution's evidence proved the prisoners' guilt of the charge beyond a reasonable doubt. However, Odumosun condemned the mother and daughter to six months in prison each, with the possibility of receiving N5,000 as an alternative. Before they could access the N5,000 fine, she mandated that the prisoners return N100,000 to the complainant as reparations. In response to Atiku's claims, Murray-Bruce said on his X page on Wednesday night that Akpabio had been thoroughly inspected and had "come out clean as a whistle." He also said that "innuendo, hearsay, and dog whistles" should not be allowed to hide the facts. He stressed that the National Assembly should not be weakened for political reasons. He wrote in a long post: “I know Senator Godswill Akpabio personally and intimately. He is a man of unimpeachable good character, and both the South-South and Nigeria are fortunate to have him at the helm of affairs at the National Assembly at this delicate stage in our national growth. “On the issue of corruption, here we have a man who has been investigated in and out by independent investigative agencies and friends and foes alike, yet he has come out clean as a whistle. Nigeria needs stability and men of ability, and it behoves us as a nation to tread with caution at this critical time of our national life. Institutions such as the Legislature should not be trifled with because of partisan considerations. “I will not stand idly by while some persons try, both home and abroad, to destroy an institution I was once proudly a part of. I am a Nigerian, who is proud of Nigeria, and will give my all to protect and project my country to the world. “I give him my right hand of fellowship and stand firmly with him. Innuendo, hearsay, and dog whistles will always come. But they can never be so powerful that they will take preeminence over facts.” Source: https://femotech.com.ng/2025/03/akpabio-is-a-man-of-unimpeacheable-good-character-nigeria-is-fortunate-to-have-him-ben-murray-bruce/ 1 Share |
