By-Election: I Have The Magic Wand To End Insecurity In Anambra South - LP Senatorial Hopeful, Barr. Amamgbo, Says Ihiala Remains Worst Hit

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Following the prevailing insecurity in Ihiala and by extension, Anambra South Senatorial District, the Labour Party Senatorial Aspirant for the Anambra South by-election, Barr. Donald Chidi Amamgbo has said he has the magic wand to end insecurity in the Zone if elected.

The Califonia based lawyer, with over thirty years who stated this during a press conference in Awka, Anambra State Capital, said the essence of the media engagement cum gathering was to bring to the fore the harrowing experiences of my people in Anambra South Senatorial District, especially in Ihiala and its environs, describing the area as worst hit by the raging insecurity in Anambra state.

According to him, the harsh realities of insecurity in Anambra South had crippled businesses, human and vehicular movements, stating that they have consistently witnessed unprovoked attacks on innocent citizens, kidnappings and demands for outrageous ransoms, adding that the destruction of businesses led to serious economic downturns in the entire area.

'We have consistently witnessed the displacement of families from their ancestral homes. Breakdown of law and order, with security agencies stretched beyond their limits. These realities are unacceptable. As a son of Anambra South, I feel the pain of my people, and I refuse to stand by while our homeland descends further into chaos.

'For years, Anambra South, particularly Ihiala, Nnewi South, Orumba South, and other parts of our district, have been under siege by non-state actors, kidnappers, and criminal elements who have turned our once-thriving communities into theatres of fear and bloodshed. Our people, who are predominantly traders, industrialists, farmers, and professionals, now live in perpetual anxiety, unable to go about their lawful businesses,' he said.

Speaking on his vision, which said, geared towards restoring security and stability, Barr. Amamgbo emphasized that it was about time they rise and take decisive actions against what he described as a marauding monster .

'It’s either we rise together or fall together. It’s either we provide security for everybody, or we can not have our own mini-army while everybody else dies. The security situation currently requires a law that will make it impossible for security agents to be assigned to wealthy people.

'All prominent personalities from governors to senators, House of Reps , and other notable public office holders need to be stripped of police protection. Knowing this, stakeholders would quickly show commitment to internal security by overhauling the system if they no longer have access to police escorts,' he stated.

The legal luminary emphatically said that security votes allocated to state governors should not be seen as pocket money but as monies meant to be used for the protection of life and property, even as he said the disbursement of the security votes must be reviewed, especially in areas where insecurity has become so pronounced that people now live in fear and hardly run their businesses or sleep in peace.

'A committee made up of well-meaning citizens who are professionals in their various fields of endeavour should be constituted to handle the funds, ensure compliance, and enforce ability. In that case, the governor will only be expected to submit his security priorities for funding and follow-up.

'I will call for the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and ask the international community to intervene and establish a truth and reconciliation committee that will address the agitations of the marginalized. But to the criminals who are riding on the back of Nnamdi Kanu's legitimate and ionate desire to uplift Ndigbo, I have one message for you: We will not succumb to your terror

'As a seasoned international lawyer, I understand that insecurity is not just a local problem; it is a national and international issue. Additionally, it is a socioeconomic problem as well as a governance and legal challenge that requires strategic local, state, national, and international intervention. If elected as the senator representing Anambra South, I will leverage my s as a U.S. lawyer and my position in the Nigerian Senate to drive legislative and policy solutions that will reclaim our communities from the grip of insecurity.

My Approach Will Include the Following: Economic Revitalization and Job Creation to Address Root Causes. Unemployment remains a key driver of crime. I will champion initiatives that empower youths with skills and capital to divert them from criminal tendencies.

'I will advocate for proper training and empowerment of our teeming youths in such a way that firms that train and employ them stand to get tax rebates for each of them. This means initiating economic incentives to train and hire.
Sponsoring Security Bills and Advocating for Special Federal Interventions

'I will push for laws that strengthen local policing structures, enabling community-based security frameworks.

'I will work to ensure that Anambra South gets a fair share of federal security deployment, including specialized task forces designated to address insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping.

'Collaboration with Security Agencies and Community Leaders. All security leaders will undergo rigorous background security checks, including psychological tests, and must be cleared by the DSS while declaring their assets before assuming office. We will establish an oversight committee comprising the EFCC, DSS, and NIA, where useful information about internal security will be shared regularly.

'I will facilitate stronger synergy between law enforcement agencies and traditional institutions to ensure intelligence gathering and swift response to threats. I will lobby for increased funding for security infrastructure, including surveillance technology and body cameras, to track and neutralize criminal elements. Judicial and Legislative Oversight for Swift Justice

'As a lawyer, I will ensure that those arrested for crimes are prosecuted swiftly and fairly. The culture of impunity must end. I will push for laws that empower security agencies to act decisively while respecting human rights.

'Insecurity is not just an Anambra South problem; it is a national and international emergency. I call on the federal and state governments to urgently deploy more resources to tackle this menace before it spirals further out of control. Our people have suffered enough, and the time to act is now.

'Recall that Boko Haram started off as a religious group, Maitatsine, before turning to violence and annexing territories. What Simon Ekpa is doing in Finland may seem like a small problem, but its adverse effects here in the Southeast are enormous. The individual in Louisiana who drove a truck into a gathering of people celebrating New Year was indoctrinated in Egypt. The strategic implication of this problem for America is clear. As a senator, I can leverage the American parliament to attract funds set aside for global security challenges.

'If we can not keep people safe, they will migrate because global migration is a reality. If we don’t nip terrorism in the bud, chances are that it will be exported by homegrown fanatics who now see the authorities as either indifferent to their local cause or hostile to their terrorist agenda.

'To my people of Anambra South, I assure you that better days are ahead. My aspiration is to call for a new era of security, prosperity, and governance that puts the interests of our people first. With your , we will take back our communities and build a safer, stronger Anambra South.Thank you,' he concluded.

Jubilation In Awka As Japanese Govt, UNOPS
Present Flood Detection Equipment, Vehicles, Truck To Anambra State

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The executive chamber of the Anambra State government, Awka, was a beehive of activities yesterday, 30th January 2025 as the government of Japan, through the initiative "Emergency to Climate Change" in partnership with the United Nations Office for Project Services, donated multi-million Naira flood detection equipment, vehicles, truck to Anambra State in response to the impact of the 2022 flood that ravaged many local government areas.

Handing over the emergency for climate disasters to the Anambra State government, the Chargé d’Affaires of the Embassy of Japan in Nigeria, Hitoshi Kozaki, said the exercise, funded by the Japanese government and implemented by UNOPS, was aimed at mitigating the devastating effects of climate disasters in Anambra State.

Hitoshi stated that the equipment, which includes operational vehicles, laptops, and other digital gadgets to detect rising flood levels in the state, was designed to provide necessary information about disasters and how to control them.

He noted that the Japanese government provided funding for the Anambra State government through SEMA in 2024 to strengthen its capacity and logistics. The includes vehicles, a truck, ICT equipment, GPS vehicle trackers, and flood detection devices.

Commending the Anambra State government for its persistence and determination in seeking assistance in climate disaster management, he expressed optimism that the emergency would help the state navigate the prevalence of flooding and other climate-related disasters

He said the equipment, which includes two Hilux vans, five Sports Utility Vehicles (SUVs), and flood detection gadgets, was provided to aid the state, particularly in the eight local government areas most affected by flooding and other disasters.

Appiah explained that the programme, which commenced in 2023, was designed to provide systematic to Anambra State in the proactive management of climate disasters by supplying logistics and operational vehicles for rapid disaster response.

Funded by the Government of Japan and implemented by UNOPS, he lamented the bottlenecks in fully executing the programme, particularly delays in clearing the vehicles.

In her remarks, the UNOPS Director, Ghana Multi-Country Office, Ifeoma Charles-Monwube, described the initiative as a significant project offering solutions to climate disasters in Anambra State.

She expressed concern over the effects of flooding in various local government areas and hoped that the emergency would help the state navigate the challenges posed by climate disasters.

Earlier, in her welcome address, Anambra State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Mrs Chiamaka Nnake, stated that the state government sought the help of the Japanese government through the UNOPS programme to assist in the early detection and proactive management of flooding.

She noted that the provision of operational logistics, especially vehicles and trucks, would enable the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to respond to disasters promptly before assistance from larger agencies.

Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represented by his deputy, Dr Onyekachukwu Ibezim, thanked the Japanese government and UNOPS for their assistance to the state.

Ibezim noted that Anambra is a small state in of landmass yet faces significant challenges due to erosion, with over 35% of its land affected.

'Because of climate change, we have issues with flooding, as it occurs frequently. We have eight to nine local government areas affected by floods, and these areas are crucial to our agricultural revolution. The flood devastates these agricultural regions. We have immediate, short-term, and long-term plans, with the immediate plan focused on evacuating people from affected areas.'

He further called on the federal government to expedite action in constructing new dams across the country to mitigate the impact of flooding, which, he said, continues to pose serious challenges for the state.

'It enables the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) to respond to disasters promptly before assistance from larger agencies.'

Alleged kidnap of Big Ben: Group calls on Security agencies to question Chukwudi Ezenma, other associates

The Awka Progressives Forum, APF, a forum of Awka Patriots and Professionals, has called on the Anambra State Police Command and the Department of State Security Services, DSS, in the state investigating the alleged kidnap on November 12, 2024 of one Ben Ezemma, aka Big Ben, who is the Vice Chairman of Durbai Estate, to a matter of urgency extend their investigation to the Chairman of Durbai Estate, one Chukwudi Ezenma and other associates of the missing person.

It would be recalled that the wife of Mr. Ezemma had in November 13, 2024, wrote a letter to the DSS, alleged that her husband, while staying at Maxbe hotel in Awka called about 6.25pm to tell her of a meeting he had with one Loco regarding land matters. Her husband, she said, had not been seen since then, alleging that on that day he disappeared, he had met with Ozo Jeff Nweke at his Mango and Lion Properties building in Awka.
The DSS had since filed a suit at the High Court of Justice, Awka against some people and another involving Ozo Jeff Nweke as an interested party after preliminary investigations.
But in a statement by APF in Awka on Wednesday, the forum said it had been following the saga studiously and would want a situation in which the investigating police and DSS officers should extend their searchlight to the associates of Mr. Ben Ezemma with a view to unraveling the mystery behind his disappearance on November 12, after speaking with his wife and some of his associates at Maxbe hotel on that day before leaving to meet with one Loco whom his wife mentioned in her petition.
This, the forum's statement signed by Ken Igwedimma and Chinwuko Ibeabuchi as Chairman and Secretary respectively, was for a proper and convincing investigation into the matter in avoidance of witch-hunt and miscarriage of justice.
The Forum said it decided to speak up after it's attention was drawn to some snide unsigned Facebook remarks made by faceless people aimed at denigrating the person of Ozo Jeff Nweke and or impugning his character before the right thinking public.
The statement said that such unsubstantiated Facebook remarks made before the matter is heard may be aimed at diverting attention, the more reason the security agencies should be more proactive and pursue their investigation diligently.
According to it's statement, " Such snide remarks in our view amounts to outright assassination of the character of Ozo Jeff Nweke, a media trial before the hearing and a ploy to denigrate and portray him in bad light in the eyes of undiscerning of the public.
" Our investigations after reading the unsigned Facebook post showed that every piece of the write up therein was doubtful and out of tune with the character of Ozo Jeff Nweke who we have known as a philanthropist, fighter for the oppressed and less privileged whose drive is to see to the development of Ezinano community and Awka in general with his hard earned resources.
" We recall that in December 2024, Ozo Nweke, a private security expert had pledged a #10million bounty on any information that could lead to the arrest by the police of those who murdered over 16 people in neighbouring Nibo community during their new yam festival.
" He had also donated on behalf of Ezinano community the sum of #100million to be shared among women and widows in Ezinano, to enable them engage in meaningful ventures and contribute their quota to the development of society because according to him, ' an idle mind is the devil's workshop '.
" We are honestly taken aback by this obvious campaign of calumny against Ozo Jeff Nweke and wondered why the writer chose to remain faceless if his intentions and motivations were not sinister.
" We advise that these faceless Facebook writers who indulge in this campaign of calumny to channel their energies toward unraveling the mystery behind the
disappearance of Benjamin Ezemma on November 12, 2024, as reported by his wife for positive results."

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The All Progressives Congress (APC) Anambra State Chapter has scheduled the gubernatorial primary election to hold on the 28th day of March 2025 in preparation for the gubernatorial election slated for 8th November 2025.

In a statement signed by the State Publicity Secretary APC Anambra State, Dr. Valentine Iyke-Oliobi said the information was communicated by the State Chairman Hon. Sir. Basil Ejidike who brokered the news to the of the State Working Committee yesterday, 23rd January 2025, after their meeting at Abuja.

According to the State Chairman, the decision was taken after the meeting of the National Working Committee held a few days ago at the APC National Secretariat. The meeting was in line with the meeting held with the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) boss Prof. Mahmood Yakubu with the heads of all the political parties a few days back.

The All Progressives Congress found it imperative to meet and design a program for the Anambra State Gubernatorial primary election and communicate to the INEC within the ambit of the Electoral Law.

According to the State Chairman, we are ready and determined to conduct a free, fair, and credible primary election that will be acceptable to all aspirants. Under my watch, I will do everything humanly possible to continue to keep Anambra APC as one indivisible family through guaranteeing them a free, fair, and credible primary election come March 29th. In achieving the above aim, the party will go for the election with an all-inclusive house, and victory will be assured.

Furthermore, it is pertinent to know that a total number of four Aspirants have declared their intentions to fly the party flag come November 8th. They are, Sir. Paul Chukwuma, Late Sen. Dr. Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, Chief Sir Azuka Okwuosa, Prof. Obiora Okonkwo and Hon. Evangelist Nicholas Ukochukwu. But unfortunately, we lost one of our best, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah to the cold hands of death on July 27th last year. May his soul continue to be at peace with his Maker. And arising from Sen. Ubah's death and vacancy, Chief Azuka Okwuosa decided to run the race for the replacement of Sen. Ubah in the Red Chambers with Chief Dozie Ikedife Jnr.

Consequently, news has it that in a few days' time, many will be declaring their intentions to the Guber position, having seen the primary election timetable provided by the APC National Secretariat. But as of today, APC Anambra State has, Sir. Paul Chukwuma, Professor Obiora Okonkwo, and Hon. Evangelist Nicholas Ukochukwu as the official Aspirants in the Governorship race. While Rt. Hon. Chukwuma Umeoji and High Chief Engr Johnbosco Onunkwo and two other persons may the guber race by next week.

The gesture was part of the activities lined up by the Council boss to mark his 100 days in office, having been sworn in as elected Executive Chairman of Idemili North on the 4th October 2024.

Flagging off the free health insurance scheme to mark the 100 anniversary yesterday at the Council's Headquarters, Ogidi, Nkwoka said the free health insurance programme would provide healthcare services coverage for out-patient and in-patient care, maternal and child healthcare, diagnostics tests and procedures, prescription medications and minor surgeries.

He said that the quality and affordable healthcare being pursued is part of Governor Chukwuma Soludo's good governance gesture that saw the State win the Best Health- care Delivery State in Nigeria.

The number one citizen of Idemili North pointed out that he capitalized on the loopholes he discovered in the health system, leading to invitation of Anambra State Health Insurance Scheme (ASHIA) to facilitate the mapping and registration of enrollees for the health insurance.

In addition to the healthcare insurance, he said his three months old istration has tackled zero pot hole and zero waste on the roads in the area.

According to him, the provision of an Ambulance vehicle would help the sick in critical condition to get quick access to healthcare and added that the hope of doubling the figure as soon as the internally-generated revenue increases in future, even as he said that they would intensify efforts towards making sure that Idemili North becomes the number one in Immunization exercise, saying that he would do everything within his powers to ensure that infants from all the towns were immunized and in a record time too.

Speaking during the event, the Managing Director of ASHIA, Dr. Simeon Onyemachi, represented by Dr. Adaeke Okechi appreciated the council boss for his thoughtful disposition to touch the lives of his subjects through adopting and providing free and quality health care to the 2,500 beneficiaries from the 12 wards in the Council Area.

The ASHIA boss noted that 2,500 boxes are being delivered to the beneficiaries as soon as they were enrolled and issued with identification cards, adding that the 90 percent of the enrollees who couldn't afford access to health have been adopted by the gesture of the Council boss.

Addressing the gathering, the Speaker of the Idemili North Council Legislature, Hon. Samuel Anikpe (Oyinatumba, Wester) and the Supervisor for Health who doubles as the Chairman of all the Supervisors in Anambra State, Dr. Nkem Okeke (Chinyelugo) lauded the chief servant of Idemili North, who they described as the most health-care friendly mayor for placing much value in the life of his people and healthy living.

The duo observed that the healthcare insurance that gives free access to 2,500 persons who lack access to healthcare, struggle to make ends meet, forced to choose between paying for medical treatment and putting good food on the table.

According to them, the enrollment of 2,500 persons into the health insurance scheme as part of the Council Chairman's dedication to the welfare of the people would help increase their life span.

In their separate speeches, the Commissioner for Health Anambra State, Dr Afam Obidike, the Commissioner for Information, Dr Law Mefor, Executive Secretary PHCs, Pharm. Chisom Uchem,.Director Health Idemili North, Lady Chinwe Okeke, the Assistant Public Health World Health Organisation (WHO), Uju Orjiagu extolled the Mayor and his team, saying that what he has done within this short period in office cannot be quantified, adding that Idemili North remains the number one in ASHIA enrolment with over 2,500.

'No local government in Anambra State has been able to do that. 2,500 persons is quite huge. The highest before now is 1000 enrollees. We must continue to appreciate and thank the Mayor for his kind disposition. Idemili North is really working, 'the Health Commissioner said.

Unveiling of unified signpost and front colour painting for all Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) in Idemili North by the Mayor's Wife, Lady Ebere Nkwoka (Mama Idemili North), speeches, eulogies and interactions formed the highpoints of the event

Operation Udo Ga-Achi: Soludo's Infrastructural Strides Costs Me My Multi-million Naira Building In Awka - Obi

....Says It didn't Stop Him from Calling for His Re-election

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

Human rights activist and Convener of the Recover Nigeria Project, Comrade Osita Obi, has cried out to Governor Soludo to look towards his direction and compensation him over his demolished building which, he said, cost him his lifetime savings, adding that his pitiable ordeal would not deter him from calling for the re-election of the Governor whom he described as wonder working leader.

Comrade Obi, who made the appeal while addressing journalists in Awka, the Anambra State capital, called on governorship aspirants in Anambra State to step down and allow Governor Charles Soludo to do his second term.

He stated that the governor should be allowed to continue his efforts in transforming the state. According to him, those aspiring to govern should instead contribute their resources to strengthening the state’s security architecture rather than pursuing fruitless ambitions.

He said that after visiting several of Governor Soludo’s projects in the state, he concluded that he must him.

'I want to urge those who are aspiring to contest the governorship against Soludo to withdraw and use their money to Soludo’s security fund. For now, Soludo is the best for the state. Let everyone drop their ambition to become governor. Soludo is doing great work,' he said.

On the issue of Ebube Muonso, coursing those that speak evil against him, Comrade Obi stated that no one could harm him because he is above human destruction, stating that only God has the power to take his life.

'I am not afraid of human destruction. It is God who can kill me,” he said.

He also called on Father Ebube Muonso to apologize to the governor for speaking to him in an indecent manner. 'There is nothing wrong if Ebube Muonso apologizes to the governor for his indecent remarks,'he said.

Comrade Obi itted that he had previously stated he would storm his church in protest, but he is now apologizing for that statement, as it was made out of anger.

Regarding why he is focusing on Ebube Muonso and not others, Comrade Obi explained that it was Muonso’s comment that caught his attention, noting that no one else had publicly labelled the governor as wicked. 'Everything should be done rightly and properly,' he said.

However, he acknowledged that as a citizen of Anambra State, Ebube Muonso has the right to raise issues but must do so respectfully, without insulting the governor.

He criticized Muonso for describing the governor as wicked, reprobate, and suggesting he was happy about the insecurity.
'Criticism should be done within the boundaries of decency. He should be more respectful when criticizing the governor. The governor is an institution's Comrade Obi said.

Oke-ite Money Rituals Allien to Ndigbo - Dr Ramas, Urges Soludo to Inaugurate Traditional Medicine Council, Native Doctors Board Now

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

A renowned traditional native doctor in Anambra State, Prophet Dr. Ramas Okoye-Asuzu (Ezeoba Akajiofor Ndigbo), has urged the governors of the Southeast, especially Governor Charles Soludo, to inaugurate the Traditional Medicine Council or Native Doctors Board, involving him and his colleagues, to help the government address what he called the evil practices of criminals and ritualists operating under the guise of traditional native doctors.

Addressing newsmen at his country home, Nri, in Anaocha Local GovernmentArea of Anambra State Dr Ramas also known as Eze-Oba, advised Soludo to assemble the true practitioners to help him get rid of the quacks and evil ones, saying that he would be will to work with the government if consulted.

'We have genuine practitioners like the late Rev. Fr. Arazu, Ifediomimi in Nnewi, Anyafulugo (Ilonze) in Agu Awka, and Awogu in Anaku, Ayamelum Local Government Area.

'Together, we can regulate and check the practices of bad eggs in the traditional and native doctors sector in Igbo land,' he stated.

The traditionalist raised a fresh alarm that the practice of money rituals, popularly known as Oke-Ite, has taken over the Southeast region, lamenting that it is the origin of ritual killings in Igboland.

It would be recalled that last year, Governor Charles Soludo, in an effort to curb the disturbing rise of ritual killings by alleged native doctors, announced the registration of practitioners as part of his fight against insecurity in the region.

Soludo stated that these native doctors had been accused of providing charms and protective amulets to gunmen involved in killings and kidnappings in the state.

Dr. Ramaz Okoye-Asuzu further stated that the Oke-Ite ritual is a taboo in Igbo land, emphasizing that the practice is neither the culture, religion, nor tradition of the Igbo people.

According to him, many people who claim to be native doctors or traditional medicine practitioners are fa. Hence, e he is calling for the establishment of a Traditional Medicine Council in the entire geopolitical zone.

Asuzu stated that, 'All the criminals hanging red, white, and black clothes in the bush, trying to pose as native doctors, are all fakes and quacks.

'They have made our young men and women lazy; they cannot engage in anything meaningful to earn a living. All they want is quick money, and the apprenticeship life of the Igbo people has been forgotten because of the pursuit of fast money.”

'Oke-Ite is not an Igbo tradition; in fact, it is a taboo. Most of these young men and women who claim they are involved in a business called Yahoo-Yahoo are ritualists, and there is no such ritual without human parts, which is evil.' he concluded..

Christmas is a Season to Celebrate Love of God for Humanity -NLC Anambra State Chairman, Sir Humphrey Nwafor

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Chairman of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Anambra State Chapter, Comrade (Sir) Humphrey Emeka Nwafor, has described Christmas as a season to celebrate the love of God for humanity.

In his Christmas Message, Comrade (Sir) Nwafor said 'On behalf of the State Executive Council (SEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress, I extend very warm Christmas greetings to all our Christian sisters and brothers in Anambra State, especially those of the working-class family and indeed to all women and men of goodwill all over the state.

'Christmas is a season to celebrate the love of God for humanity – a love that was profoundly expressed by the birth of the Saviour. The sights and sounds of the first Noel convey most powerfully the reason for the season.

'The appearance of the angels, the swathing of great lights of glory, the announcement of good tidings of great joy, the discovery of Baby Jesus wrapped in swaddling clothes and the outbreak of Hosanna from the heavenly host chorusing “Glory to God in the Highest and on earth peace and goodwill towards men” is the summary of Christmas which signifies the love of God that births the light of hope for all humanity.

'This Christmas, we urge Anambra State workers and people to resonate in the light of hope birthed by the love of God conveyed through the birth of His son Jesus Christ. It is the illumination of this hope that inspires confidence in our hearts that however turbulent the year might have been for you, light would certainly emerge and shine at the end of our tunnel.

'Christmas sublime message. It is only prudent that we take sinew from the knowledge that the darkest night usually births the brightest mornings. We believe that Anambra’s brightest morning is just ahead of us.

Again, I wish you all a memorable Christmas lighted with hope.

By Mmaduabuchi Onwumelu

The Government of Anambra State through the Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, says that there is no election of traditional ruler in Oba, in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State, warning that anyone caught parading himself as Igwe-Elect of the Community will be severely dealt with.

Addressing newsmen in his office domiciled inside the Government House, the Commissioner for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. TonyCollins Nwabunwanne (Ife Anam), stated that the people of Oba have been asked to ensure that there was no pending case in any court before proceeding to conduct the traditional ruler's election, stating that it is the prerogative of his office to monitor and supervise the entire process and make the needed recommendations to the Governor for the issuance of the certificate of recognition and return.

'They have started doing something before we came. Along the line they said the existing process will no longer be followed that they have a President General. Before then, three persons emerged from the previous exercise. The President General said they are now starting afresh.

'The reason he gave for halting the initial arrangement was that one of the three candidates cannot speak fluently. I inquired about the position of their constitution on that, he said the constitution says anyone who can read and write can contest. I told him that is not enough reason to disqualify the man.The matter was taken to court by a group who said the President General was playing out a card and that he annulled the previous process to pave way for his boss who is in overseas. They allegedly said that he was reserving the position for the man they said gave him his first job in Shell. We, the government, pleaded with those three to participate in the new process. They listened to us and participated.

'This time, they were four in number. That man they talked about eventually ed the race and contested. They told us that they have withdrew all the cases and they are going ahead to conduct the election. While we are still discussing a lawyer walked in and said there is a case pending in court. I asked them and they said there is no such thing. I communicated the Attorney General of the state who confirmed through our lawyers that there is an existing matter at the court. At this point we have to issue a circular asking them not to proceed with any election. You can see no one from my office attended. No security agent attended too. We communicated them on the position of the government and the court. As far as we are concern no election take place anywhere and anyone caught parading himself will be arrested and detained,' he concluded.
