‘She has been helpful to many, and especially to me.’ Romans 16:2

When it comes to life’s great achievers, the apostle Paul is in a league of his own. But he takes one entire chapter of the Bible, Romans 16, to acknowledge all the people who helped him to succeed in his calling. The chapter could be captioned ‘I couldn’t have done it without you!’ He starts by talking about Phoebe, ‘… who is worthy of honour … for she has been helpful to many, and especially to me’ (Romans 16:2 NLT). President Lyndon Johnson said, ‘There are no problems we cannot solve together, and very few that we can solve by ourselves.’

When God created Adam, He said, ‘... It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper …’ (Genesis 2:18 NKJV). And He created Eve. From the beginning of time, God teaches us that very little of significance is ever accomplished by an individual acting alone. Look below the surface, and you will invariably find that all the single-handed feats are really team efforts. Australian pioneer of the aviation industry, Charles Kingsford Smith, with his co-pilot Charles Ulm achieved a series of aviation firsts. Australian doctors Ken and Jocelyn Elliott were a formidible team, working in Burkina Faso. Even German-born physicist Albert Einstein acknowledged: ‘Many times a day I realise how much my own outer and inner life is built upon the labours of my fellow men, both living and dead, and how earnestly I must exert myself in order to give in return as much as I have received.’ The secret to success in any endeavour can be summed up in these three words: connect … commit … communicate.

Bearing spiritual fruit

Mon, 9 Jun 2025

‘So God created man in His own image … Then … said …“Be fruitful …”’ Genesis 1:27-28

A pastor writes: ‘When God created man, He made him “in His own image”. That was God’s original plan, and it has not changed. He wants to make us like Himself … godly. He does it by working on our character through His Word, through His Holy Spirit, and through circumstances. The Greek word for ‘character’ … means ‘tested and proven reliable’. It brings to mind the work of a blacksmith, describing something that has gone through the fire, has been beat on … but has stood the test.’

Notice, one of the first things God said to man was, ‘be fruitful.’ And Jesus tells us how: ‘"He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing”’ (John 15:5 NKJV). But fruit takes time to ripen. When you try to rush the process, it doesn’t taste as good. Have you ever tasted gassed tomatoes? You might buy them at the supermarket. If farmers pick ripe tomatoes and ship them, they could get smashed enroute to market. So, they may pick them green, spray them with ethylene gas before they go to market, and the gas quickly ripens green tomatoes into red. If you have ever tasted a vine-ripened tomato, you know there is no comparison to those that have been quickly ripened. Similarly, it takes time for spiritual fruit to grow in your life. You can’t take a crash course and graduate with spiritual maturity. It requires a lifetime of walking with God, leaning on Him, learning from Him, and loving Him with all your heart. God wants to produce the fruit of the Spirit in your life, so cooperate with Him.

‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come...’ 2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV

Every day, people ’read’ you. The question is: what kind of message are they getting? Here is what they’re supposed to get: ‘And we all, … are being transformed into His image …’ (2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV). ‘Rather, we have renounced secret and shameful ways; …’ (2 Corinthians 4:2 NIV). ‘Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: the old has gone, the new is here!’ (2 Corinthians 5:17 NIV). In other words, your letter should make it clear that you’re no longer the person you once were because:

1) Christ has changed you spiritually. Once you didn’t enjoy God’s Word or obey His commands. Now you hear, receive, love, and obey His Word and revel in it (see Psalm 119:97-106). 2) Christ has changed you morally. In 1 Corinthians 6, Paul lists many of the sins that once characterised our lives. He mentions those who are immoral, thieves, greedy, drunkards, slanderers, swindlers, etc. Then comes this wonderful verse: ‘And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified …’ (1 Corinthians 6:11 NIV), just as if you’d never sinned. In other words, God has transformed your character qualities. 3) Christ has changed you mentally. ‘… be transformed by the renewing of your mind. …’ (Romans 12:2 NIV). Now you look at life, yourself, others, your challenges, your options, and opportunities in the light of God’s thoughts instead of your own. You see possibilities where before you saw only problems. Your mind, which was once frazzled by worry, is now filled with confidence and peace. In essence, your letter should transmit this message to the people you meet: ‘Christ has changed my life for the better, and if you let Him, He will change yours too!’

The Silent Disaster of Lake Nyos: Nature’s Invisible Killer

On the night of August 21, 1986, a remote lake in northwestern Cameroon became the site of one of the most mysterious natural disasters in modern history. Without warning, Lake Nyos released a massive cloud of carbon dioxide (CO₂)—colorless, odorless, and deadly.

The gas silently rolled down into nearby villages while people slept. Within minutes, 1,746 people and over 3,500 animals were dead. Survivors described waking up to find entire communities lifeless, with no visible injuries—only silence.

This rare phenomenon, called a limnic eruption, occurs when volcanic gases build up in deep lake water and suddenly erupt. The CO₂ cloud displaces oxygen in the air, causing rapid suffocation.

In response, scientists installed degassing systems in Lake Nyos and similar lakes to prevent future tragedies. But the disaster remains a haunting reminder that not all threats are loud or visible.

---

🧠 Did You Know?
CO₂ is heavier than air. When released in large volumes, it can flow like water—silently filling valleys and suffocating everything in its path.

‘We … are being transformed into His image ...’ 2 Corinthians 3:18 NIV

You have probably heard the old saying about doctors and their prescriptions, ‘They can read writing, but they can’t write reading.’ A letter must be easily read and understood. Incomprehensible writing distorts the message and discourages the reader. The purpose of a letter is to convey the writer’s thoughts. When it doesn’t, the reader stops reading or fails to get the message. And since ‘You show that you are a letter from Christ,’ (2 Corinthians 3:3 NIV), here are some common distortions you need to avoid:

1) Dishonesty on the job. That includes things like inflating your expenses, stealing company time, and taking home items you think won’t be missed. 2) A bad attitude. For example, resentment when a friend, fellow worker, or boss asks you at an inconvenient time to help them and go the extra mile. 3) Substandard work reflected in shoddy products and services. 4) Unreliability and inconsistency. Can you be counted on to be where you’re supposed to be and to fulfil your obligations? 5) Being a killjoy. Christians who lack a sense of humour and act like they are joy impaired hurt the cause of Christ instead of helping it. 6) Touchiness. How do people ‘read’ you? Do you wear your feelings on your sleeve? Are you easily upset? Do you overreact to unintended offences? 7) Temper tantrums. Are you crabby, grumpy, and complaining when things don’t go your way? cool Self-righteousness. This can make you speak in supercilious, religious tones that turn people off. , you’re ‘known and read by everyone’, so make sure your attitude and conduct reflect well on your faith and your Lord.

‘You show that you are a letter from Christ,’ 2 Corinthians 3:3

Paul wrote to the Corinthian believers: ‘You yourselves are our letter, written on our hearts, known and read by everyone. You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, … on tablets of human hearts’ (2 Corinthians 3:2-3 NIV). Usually, when we get letters through the post, we sort it into two piles: important letters and junk mail. How do we make that determination? By answering these two questions:

1) Who is the letter from? The source determines your interest level. And you are a letter to the world from Christ, and about Christ, ‘For what we preach is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, …’ (2 Corinthians 4:5 NIV). Religious people often promote their denomination, but we’re called to promote Christ—and Him alone. Are people really interested? Yes, Jesus promised, ‘And I, when I am lifted up … will draw all people to myself’ (John 12:32 NIV). Nothing is more needed today than a living portrait of Jesus reflected in the lives of His redeemed people. So, deliver your love letter to whoever crosses your path. 2) Who is the letter addressed to? The Bible answers that question: ‘… that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life’ (John 3:16 NKJV). Dr David Yonggi Cho built the world’s largest church in Seoul, South Korea: almost a million people. That’s bigger than many towns and cities. But as a young Buddhist, he was led to Christ by a lady he only met once. What if she had decided to remain silent? Your life is a letter from Christ with the potential to change someone else’s life, so make sure you deliver it.

Don’t get ahead of God

Thu, 5 Jun 2025

‘Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it...’ Psalm 127:1

One Bible teacher writes: ‘Satan doesn’t mind when we build, as long as he’s the head contractor. He’ll make sure we smear God’s name all over our dreams, then when they fail, it’ll look like He failed. Romans 8:14 says, ‘For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God’ (KJV). It’s important to know God’s plan, as well as when, where, and through whom He wants it accomplished.

It’s easy to get caught up in the busyness of ministry and run ahead of Him. The key is to stay in constant communication and let Him lead you step by step so that everything is in place for a successful outcome. Like the military, the troops may be informed about the mission, but they must wait for their commander to tell them when and how to accomplish their assignment. A soldier doesn’t attend one briefing and then run off and accomplish the plan alone. He stays in with his commanding officer, who coordinates the mission and leads him and his fellow soldiers to victory. It’s vital to stay in touch with headquarters so you know the master plan, stay on course, and achieve victory.’ If you’re inclined to go it alone, make this your prayer: ‘God, it’s foolish to get ahead of You—but putting that into practice isn’t easy. Show me how I can spend more time with You and become more sensitive to Your voice. If I go off on my own, have Your Holy Spirit check and correct my spirit. I don’t want to build in vain. I want my ministry to be an extension of You, so You get the glory.’

‘No one puts new wine into old wineskins;’ Mark 2:22

As a new creation, you’re no longer controlled by your old behaviour but by your relationship with Christ. You may have been given a new uniform at work when they rebranded and remodelled the business, but if your sullen attitude remains the same, then it’s like putting new wine into old wineskin. Jesus says we’re bound to fail because ‘… the new wine bursts the wineskins, … and the wineskins are ruined …’ (Mark 2:22 NKJV).

But don’t we do the same when it comes to our Christian walk? The new wine of honesty-at-work, poured into the old wineskin of cutting corners. The new wine of unconditional love, poured into the old wineskin of hatred for the family two doors down. The new wine of worship, poured into the old wineskin of idolising money, power, music, or the latest video game. The new wine of Bible study, poured into the old wineskin of ‘gotta-go-pop-tart-for-breakfast' busyness. The new wine of humility, poured into the old wineskin of conceit. The new wine of forgiveness, poured into the old wineskin of bitterness. The new wine of others first, poured into the old wineskin of selfish ambition. The new wine of joy, poured into the old wineskin of jealousy and factions. The new wine of peace, poured into the old wineskin of discord.’ If any of this sounds familiar, it’s time to ditch the old wineskin and let God make you a powerful, new, clean vessel.

Today, use your God-given power

Tue, 3 Jun 2025

‘You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you;’ Acts 1:8

You say, ‘If Christ lives in me, why do I still think and act the way I do?’ A Christian leader explains: ‘The answer is illustrated in a story about a lady who had a small house … at the turn of the century. She was quite wealthy but also quite frugal … People were surprised, then, when she decided to be among the first to have electricity in her home. Several weeks after the installation, a meter reader appeared at her door. He asked her if her electricity was working well, and she assured him it was. “I’m wondering if you can explain something to me,” he said. “Your meter shows scarcely any usage. Are you using your power?” “Certainly,” she answered. “Each evening when the sun sets, I turn on my lights just long enough to light my candles; then I turn them off.”’ She’s tapped into the power but didn’t use it. Her house is connected but not altered.

Don’t we make the same mistake? We, too—with our souls saved but our hearts unchanged—are connected but not altered. Trusting Christ for salvation but resisting transformation. We occasionally flip the switch, but most of the time we settle for shadows. What would happen if we left the light on? What changes would occur if we set about the task of dwelling in the radiance of Christ? No doubt about it: God has ambitious plans for us. The same one who saved your soul longs to remake your heart. His plan is nothing short of a total transformation.’ ‘For those he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, …’ (Romans 8:29 CSB). Today, use your God-given power.

Be real

Mon, 2 Jun 2025

‘People judge by outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.’ 1 Samuel 16:7

Jesus was rough on Pharisees: ‘Outwardly you look like righteous people, but inwardly your hearts are filled with hypocrisy and lawlessness’ (Matthew 23:28 NLT). They put on a good front but were devoid of grace, mercy, and comion. And Jesus called them on it! Because we live in an appearance-focused society, Jesus warns us about the dangers that come from dwelling on the outer life at the cost of developing the inner life. So, how do you keep that from happening?

1) Follow Jesus’ example. He spent His life ministering to the hurting, the forgotten, the lost, and lonely. 2) Keep in mind that even though you’re a Christian, you will still struggle in certain areas, and don’t try to act like you ‘have it all together’. 3) Ask God to reveal behaviour patterns that are appearance oriented instead of heart oriented. 4) Surround yourself with transparent people who encourage you to be real and correct you when you need it. American author Marybeth Whalen writes: ‘The painters painted the wall leading downstairs … A week later I discovered, while the wall had been repainted, the habits hadn’t changed. The kids were still dragging their dirty hands behind them, making what was white and clean, grey, and dirty. Like that wall, if I’m not careful I can cover up what’s there … wear the Christian tee shirt, carry my Bible, smile like everything’s great, and talk a good game about my walk with the Lord. But deep inside the ugly habits are waiting to be revealed the moment life gets messy. I can become a modern-day Pharisee who focuses on the whitewash and ignores the dirty stuff underneath.’ So, be real.
