The city of Engels in the Saratov region was hit by a Ukrainian drone strike during the night of June 6, Governor Roman Busargin reported. According to him, the attack caused a fire at “one of the industrial enterprises.” “Preliminary reports indicate no casualties. All relevant services are working on site. Specialists are taking all necessary measures to eliminate the consequences,” Busargin wrote on his Telegram channel.

According to Astra, the fire broke out at the Kristall oil depot of the State Reserve, which supplies fuel to the Engels-2 military airfield. The airfield hosts Tu-95MS and Tu-160 bombers. Earlier this year, Ukrainian drones attacked the oil depot twice. The first attack on January 8 destroyed three tanks of 120,000 cubic meters each and damaged six others, resulting in a loss of about 800,000 tons of fuel. During the drone strike on Engels on June 6, one of the drones hit a residential complex on Telman Street. Residents were evacuated, and by morning, the governor reported that there was no danger and the evacuated residents would soon be able to return to their apartments. No one was injured when the drone struck the building. However, footage published by the Telegram channel “Saratov Online” showed that a balcony on one of the upper floors of the residential complex caught fire after the strike.

Additionally, during the nighttime attack, Ukrainian drones struck a facility in Michurinsk, Tambov region, acting regional head Evgeny Pervyshov reported. “Unfortunately, three people were injured; two are currently hospitalized,” he noted. According to Astra, the strike targeted the “Progress” plant, which produces high-tech equipment for aviation and missile control systems, a wide range of civil electrical equipment, and equipment for gas and oil pipelines.

Explosions were also heard during the night near Bryansk airport, but what exactly exploded is unknown. Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin reported that 10 drones were destroyed approaching the capital. He did not provide information about ground damage or casualties.

Two Chinese nationals have been accused of smuggling a fungus into the US that officials describe as a "dangerous biological pathogen".

Yunqing Jian, 33, and Zunyong Liu, 34, have been charged with conspiracy, smuggling goods, false statements, and visa fraud, the US Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Michigan announced on Tuesday.

The complaint alleges Mr Liu tried to smuggle the fungus through Detroit airport so he could study it at a University of Michigan laboratory where his girlfriend, Ms Jian, worked.

The fungus called Fusarium graminearum can cause a disease in wheat, barley, maize and rice that can wipe out crops and lead to vomiting and liver damage if it gets into food.

The fungus is described in scientific literature as a "potential agroterrorism weapon", according to the US Attorney's Office, adding it is responsible for "billions of dollars in economic losses worldwide each year."

Officials further allege Ms Jian received funding from the Chinese government for her research on the pathogen in China. They also claim she is a member of the Chinese Communist Party.

United States Attorney Jerome F Gorgon Jr described the allegations as of the "gravest national security concerns".

"These two aliens have been charged with smuggling a fungus that has been described as a 'potential agroterrorism weapon' into in the [sic] heartland of America, where they apparently intended to use a University of Michigan laboratory to further their scheme."

The investigation was a t effort between the FBI and US Customs and Border Protection.

Ms Jian is due to appear in court in Detroit, Michigan on Tuesday.

The BBC has reached out to the University of Michigan and the Chinese embassy in Washington DC for comment.

The charges come amid strained relations between the US and China, and just days after the Trump istration vowed to "aggressively" revoke the visas of Chinese nationals studying in the US.

Beijing also said Washington "severely violated" a trade truce reached in Geneva last month, when both countries lowered tariffs on goods imported from each other.

Earlier this week, a Chinese student at the University of Michigan was charged for illegally voting in the October 2024 election.

Ukraine has launched what appears to be its largest drone-based operation to date, striking two key Russian air bases that house strategic bombers used in long-range attacks against Ukrainian cities.

The June 1 attack targeted the Olenya and Belaya airfields deep inside Russian territory, Ukrainian sources confirmed.

According to information released by Ukrainian officials, the operation involved swarms of FPV drones remotely launched from vehicles positioned near the airfields. These mobile platforms were reportedly parked within proximity of the targets, enabling direct line-of-sight control for precise navigation and terminal attack.

The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) is overseeing the effort as part of an ongoing special operation code-named “Pavutyna” — or “Web” — aimed at degrading Russia’s long-range strike capabilities.

“This is a coordinated effort to eliminate enemy aircraft that continue to attack our civilian infrastructure on a nightly basis,” [/b]a Ukrainian official familiar with the operation said.

Ukrainian sources claim the drone assault [b]damaged or destroyed over 40 aircraft, including Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers, as well as at least one A-50 airborne early warning aircraft. Publicly released footage shows burning Tu-95 bombers on airfield aprons, with secondary explosions visible in multiple locations.

Open-source videos filmed by local residents appear to confirm the timing and location of the strikes. Later in the day, Ukrainian defense channels released additional visual evidence showing smoldering Russian aircraft engulfed in flames.

The scale of the damage has not been independently verified, but estimates from Ukrainian sources put Russian losses above $2 billion. If confirmed, this would represent the most damaging strike on Russia’s strategic aviation assets since the full-scale invasion began in 2022.

The Tu-95 and Tu-22M3 bombers struck in the raid are among the primary platforms used by Russian Aerospace Forces to launch cruise missiles into Ukrainian cities. Their destruction could temporarily disrupt Russia’s ability to conduct deep strikes from standoff range.

Palestinian media reported that Dr. Zakariya Sinwar, a lecturer at the Islamic University and brother of Yahya and Mohammed Sinwar, was killed along with three of his sons in a strike on the tent where he was residing in Nuseirat, central Gaza Strip.

The reports come shortly after a Saudi outlet said that Muhammad Sinwar’s body has been found in a Khan Yonis tunnel targeted by Israeli airstrikes last week.
