The flooding situation in Nigeria, which has already seen thousands of people displaced from their homes and many lives lost, has shown no signs of improvement. Conversely, it recently took another turn when residents living in Makurdi, Agatu, Adoka, Logo and many other flood-ravaged communities in Central Nigeria claimed that several dangerous creatures including crocodiles and hippopotamuses have found their way into their homes. According to them, these aquatic animals were carried into their communities as several swollen rivers in the area, including the Niger and Benue, burst their banks and inundated large tracts of land in the process, forcing residents to flee for their dear lives. As a result, residents no longer have only the water to contend with, but also with what lives in it. Nigeria has been at the mercy of ravaging floods recently, with several states across the federation including Adamawa, Anambra, Benue, Kogi, Taraba, Edo, Plateau, Ebonyi, Delta, Rivers and Cross River affected by the natural disaster, with the attendant loss of lives, farmlands and properties worth hundreds of millions of naira. It is the worst humanitarian crisis the country has faced since the civil war which ended in 1970. The Red Cross estimates that at least 148 lives have been lost in the process, with hundreds of thousands of Nigerians now taking shelter in overcrowded makeshift refugee camps amid rising fears over the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. http://happeningnaija..com |
