…says international firms leaving in droves, businesses collapsing, nation grinding to a halt

The Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP), has raised the alarm over what it described as President Bola Tinubu’s ill-conceived and hastily implemented economic policies which have imposed excruciating hardship on Nigerians and exacerbated the nation’s security problems.

The main opposition party equally alerted citizens that Nigeria is “asphyxiating, in dire straits and fast grinding to a halt under the Tinubu-led All Progressives Congress (APC), istration.”

National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, said this in a statement, in Abuja, on Monday.

He said, “The Party laments that Nigeria is at the edge of the precipice under the Tinubu-led APC hold which lacks the acceptability and followership of citizens; a situation that has created an atmosphere and feeling of absence of governance in the country.

“Our Party is alarmed that there is a serious disconnection between the government and the citizens arising from the ill-planned and hasty implementation of policies that have brought excruciating hardship, horrifying insecurity and a general sense of apprehension that is already threatening the peace, unity and corporate existence of our nation.

“The istration’s lack of ingenuity, tact and sensitivity towards the wellbeing of Nigerians in the removal of subsidy and floating of the Naira inflamed unbearable high cost of living, crippled our national productivity, crashed millions of businesses and sparked massive job loss with attendant escalated poverty, hunger, insecurity and hopelessness across the country.

“The situation has snowballed into a dangerous loss of investors’ confidence with international companies exiting our nation and leaving millions of Nigerians stranded in the labour market with crippling effect on Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) which are the real drivers of our national economy.

“It is horrifying that in the last two months, over 150 million Nigerians can no longer afford their daily meals with families now going to bed on empty stomachs.

“It is appalling that the APC government continues to tout their fraud-prone palliative program of a miserable average of 1,200 bags of rice to Nigerians in each State of the country.

“The APC has expanded its capacity to deceive and defraud Nigerians through phoney programmes; a situation that has heightened frustration across the country.

“Moreover, the PDP describes as distressing that the APC government had turned a blind eye to the plight of Nigerians with no concrete commitment towards the safety of lives of our citizens despite the killing of over 500 Nigerians in Plateau, Benue, Niger, Kaduna and other States of the federation, with many more abducted since May 29, 2023.”

The opposition party further said, “The failure of the APC government to decisively act since the abduction of eight corps who were on their way to Sokoto State for their one-year mandatory national service is another ugly testament of the APC government insensitivity towards the security, safety and wellbeing of citizens.

“More disturbing is the recent downing of a Nigerian military aircraft with attendant loss of lives of our brave and gallant military personnel without a corresponding reassuring statement from the APC government.

“Currently, under the APC, life expectancy in Nigeria has plummeted. Citizens and residents live in constant apprehension and cannot move freely across the country for fear of being killed or abducted.

“Instead of protecting Nigerians, the APC government is desperate to plunge our nation into a needless war in Niger Republic over a conflict in that nation that does not constitute any threat whatsoever to our National Interest.

“Our Party is concerned that the general sense of despondency, anxiety, distress and disconnection in the country, if not urgently addressed, could deteriorate into a serious crisis.

“The PDP charges Nigerians to remain calm, law-abiding and continue to one another in their quest for a secure and economically thriving nation.”

The contribution of the manufacturing sector to Nigeria’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in real declined to N1.5 trillion in the second Quarter ended June 2023 (Q2’230).

This represents a 17.24 percent Quarter-on-Quarter (Q-o-Q) decline compared to N1.8 trillion contribution recorded in the first quarter of the year (Q1’23).

The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics, NBS, had reported that the nation’s economy grew by 2.51% in Q2’23 compared to 2.31% in Q1’23.

The growth implies 11th consecutive quarter of economic growth, though lower than the 3.54% recorded in Q1’22.

The Bureau also reported that the real GDP for Q2’23 stood at N17.72 trillion, a 0.17 percent decrease from N17.75 trillion in Q1’23.

The manufacturing sector contribution to real GDP in percentage also fell to 8.40 percent from 10.13 percent in Q1’23.

Meanwhile, the real GDP growth in the manufacturing sector in the second quarter of 2023 was 2.20 percent, 0.81 percentage points higher than its growth level in the preceding quarter at 1.61 percent.

Comment on this development, Dr. Muda Yusuf, the chief executive of the Center for Promotion of Private Enterprise, PE, said: “The Nigerian economy is still going through corrective reforms to remove some fundamental distortions and restore the economy back to the path of recovery and growth.

But implementing the reforms is an arduous task.

“The trade offs are profound and the social impact has been devastating. “Given the inevitability of the reforms the implementation calls for a delicate balancing act and strategic sequencing to ensure an inclusive economic transition.

“The adverse impacts of the reforms were disproportionately higher than expected. However, a rebound of the economy is expected in the medium to long term as current distortions in the economy are corrected.”

LAGOS – The National Consultative Front (NCFront), the initiating platform of the Big Tent of Citizens and Stakeholders of Conscience working for a new Nigeria has said the imposition of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu and Kashim Shettima as president and vice president respectively is an invitation to self-help and anarchy by Buhari’s government.

The group in a press statement on Monday signed by Olubori Obafemi, media assistant to the director general, NCFront expressed disappointment in the way the Buhari government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), under the leadership of Mahmood Yakubu have mismanaged and discredited democracy in Nigeria by forcefully foisting an illegitimate government of Tinubu on Nigerians in spite the irregularities and malpractices that characterised the 2023 presidential election.

The statement reads, “We wish to warn the rulers of Nigeria that a situation, where they continually choose to ride roughshod on the will of the Nigerian people in flagrant breach of the country’s affirmation to run on constitutional democracy, is a blatant invitation to self-help and anarchy, where the people will be forced to ignore democratic norm and rule of law in enforcing their collective and popular will over growing clique rule in Nigeria.

MEDICAL CONSULTANTS REVEALED HOW MEN CAN NATURALLY AND PERMANENTLY CURE POOR ERECTION, SMALL AND SHAMEFUL MANHOOD, AND INFERTILITY ISSUES WITHOUT SIDE EFFECTS. STOP THE USE OF HARD DRUG FOR SEX! IT KILLS!!!..

“To this end, in saving Nigeria and defending our desecrated democracy, we have resolved to rise up in the succeeding days to mobilise and engage eminent citizens and stakeholders of conscience in Nigeria and the international community to rally immediate to defend and save our people from imminent anarchy and another round of “June 12 struggle” towards the restoration of credible elections in Nigeria.

“For us, the biggest culprits in the present massacre of democracy and justice in Nigeria is Muhammadu Buhari and his lackey, Prof Mamood Yakubu, the ignominious INEC chairman, who in a desperate gestapo manner hurriedly imposed Bola Tinubu on the country in spite of all evidences put before him by other contestants during the collation of the presidential election.

“He can therefore not be trusted by the Nigerian people to preside over any election again in Nigeria if such election must be respected by Nigerians.”

Suspended National Publicity Secretary of the Labour Party (LP), Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, has said it is curious that the Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi, cannot raise N1.5 million to secure the necessary documents from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to cross the hurdle of the pre-hearing matter in its suit against the President Elect Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Arabambi said the issue is suspicious and smack of ploy to deny the party from defending its matter before the Court on the mandate given to LP presidential candidate, Peter Obi, in the presidential election which was held in February.

According to him, the development which was revealed by the lead counsel to Obi, Professor Livy Uzuokwu, was deceptive and a ploy to deny Nigerians the mandate of the party in the presidential election tribunal hearing.

He said if the Labour Party led by Julius Abure, failed to comply with the court directive on pre-hearing, it may impact negatively on the case of its Presidential Candidate, Peter Obi.

His words: “Something happened at the election Tribunal yesterday, it is unfortunate that the lead lawyer will write letter to INEC that they do not have N1,500,000 to pay knowing fully well that the pre hearing session will terminate on Sunday.

“That means if we fail to do the needful, our petition would be dismissed.

“Now what will 13 SAN be doing till April 17 when they were asked to meet INEC, collect all necessary documents only for their lead counsel to say oh, I have just been able to get 30 percent of the documents requested for.

“The INEC led counsel said they invited him on Friday, he said he was at a party. A learned silk, Professor Ananaba went on behalf of them. They asked him to come on Monday, they did not show up, Tuesday, they did not show up, only for them to come to court on Wednesday, where Prof. Livy was asking the court for extension.

“Which the court ruled yesterday, that they will not extend it, in line with the electoral Act, that it will only take 14 days. And they told them the court will not sit on Saturday and Sunday, today is Thursday. We have Friday and Saturday.

“So how do we now work together, how do we get all these documents and so that we can now go to the hearing session because once we fail to cross the hurdle of the hearing session our petition will be dismissed.

“They know what they were doing, how can you say Obi cannot afford N1.5m. They are either working for PDP or working for APC.

“They just want to deceive the youth of Nigeria to be following their deceptive nature and this was evidence yesterday, they accused our executive of collecting money from APC.

“Yesterday, Akpabio and deputy Chairman of the APC, went to visit them and they accepted him,” Arabambi stated.

He said what is the Party leadership under Abure doing with Akpabio quest for the Senate President in the 10th Assembly?

The Budget Office of the Federation has said Nigeria now has a “limited borrowing space” due to its poor debt-to-revenue ratio, stressing that “trouble” looms for the country if it exceeds its limits.

The Director-General of the Budget Office, Ben Akabueze, while addressing -elect of the 10th National Assembly at their week-long induction ceremony in Abuja on Wednesday, pointed out that while Nigeria remains healthy with its debt-to-GDP ratio, the country is not with its debt-to-revenue ratio.

Akabueze was speaking to the newly elected and returning of the National Assembly, which is responsible for the consideration, amendment and age of annual budgets of the Federal Government as well as economic bills like the Finance Bill.

He said, “You may have heard that we have one of the lowest Gross Domestic Products-to-debt ratios in the world. While the size of the FG budget for 2023 created some excitement, the aggregate budget of all the governments in the country amount to about N30tn. That is less than 15 per cent in of ratio to GDP.

“Even on the African continent, the ratio of spending is about 20 per cent. South Africa is about 30 per cent; Morocco is about 40 per cent. And at 15 per cent, that is too small for our needs. That is why there is fierce competition for the limited resources.

“That can determine how much we can relatively borrow. We now have very limited borrowing space; not because our debt to GDP is high, but because our revenue is too small to sustain the size of our debt. That explains our high debt service ratio. Once a country’s debt service ratio exceeds 30 per cent, that country is in trouble and we are pushing towards 100 per cent, and that tells you how much trouble we are in.

“We have limited space to borrow. When you take how much you can generate in of revenue and what you can reasonably borrow, that establishes the size of the budget. The next thing would be to pay attention to the government’s priority regarding what project gets what.”

Akabueze also stated that Nigeria should not be classified as an oil-rich economy. “We are not even an oil-rich economy. To classify oil-rich economies, you talk of countries like Saudi Arabia where there are 34 million of them and pump 10 million barrels of crude per day, or Kuwait where there are 3 million of them and pump three million barrels per day,” he said

The Budget Office boss added that while Nigeria has a population of over 200 million, “we are currently pumping about 1.9million barrels per day.”

He stressed, “So, we are not a rich economy and must resist the temptation we are an oil-rich economy. Let me make it clear that we are potentially rich countries, but we are not.”

Akabueze noted that Nigerians often say the country is not short of development plans but has a problem with implementation. “I disagree because a plan that cannot speak to implementation is not a good plan,” he stated.

The DG pointed out that development plans in Nigeria date back to the early 90s. “But you can argue that it has not been successful in the desired manner. Annual budgets are essentially back sizes of development plans. They contain achievable objectives within a year. A budget that sits outside the development plan is not a good budget,” he said.

A chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former commissioner for works in Kano State, Mu’azu Magaji, has warned that the APC may lose its strong base of the North-west geological zone if the party did not zone the office of the senate president to the region.

Mr Magaji on Saturday called on the APC leadership to select the senate president from Kano to sustain its base for the party in the region in the face of other opposition parties wanting to take control.

Mr Magaji dismissed a call by the spokesperson of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Abdulmumin Jibrin, who protested against the zoning of the seat of the senate president to the northwest region.

The NNPP spokesperson told Channels Television on Wednesday that using the 1999 template, the next senate president should be from the South-east region and that a Muslim from the North-west region should not be allowed to assume the office of the next senate president

But Mr Magaji said such a comment from the NNPP was a disservice to the nation and an attempt by the NNPP to dominate the region in the absence of strong APC personalities from the region.

“The APC despite the votes it had contributed to the election of Bola Tinubu, has only one senator from Kano that is Barau Jibril, and any mistake of not making him the senate president would affect the strength and control of the region by the party.

“The NNPP’s call was deliberately geared towards seizing control of the region by disallowing the APC from having a strong political leadership like the senate president from the region under the APC.

“We are calling on the APC leadership to ensure that Senator Barau Jibrin becomes the next senate president to form a rallying point for the party in the North-west in particular and the North at large, Mr Magaji said.
