Sunshinelady:I am not vexing with the patient, I am only saying that if she does go ahead to have a vaginas delivery and things go wrong she should not blame any doctor if at the last minute she requires a CS and there are complications. An emergency CS by a doctor who does not know the patient has a higher chance of going wrong and I honestly will not blame any hospital for rejecting such a patient rushed in at the last minute because they will get the blame if something goes wrong however hard they try to help. 1 Like |

Many things can cause ear ache and the only way to differentiate is on examination, so take the above advice see an ENT.

Two possible complications of the fibroids in vaginal delivery , one is that they may block the birth canal and delay labour, by the time the patient is rushed to hospital for an emergency CS , the baby may not survive and being an unplanned surgery with no prior preparation the chances of major complications is higher. The chances of such a woman loosing her womb are also high. The other is that after delivery the uterus may not be able to contract around the fibroid and such women bleed profusely and may even die. The list goes on. If your sister does go ahead and has any complications please do not blame the unfortunate doctor that she runs to at the last minute for the outcome. I may sound harsh but it's really annoying when patients go against their doctors advice and at the end of the day the same group of doctors get blamed when anything goes wrong!

Every single ENT surgeon I know both home and abroad will tell you the same thing, fortunately many people disregard the advise so when they have problems they provide chop money for some lucky doc. ![]() |

People keep saying in the North the females are not handled by the male gynaecologist, do they also know the North also has the highest number of obstetric deaths and complications including perinatal mortality. And the funny thing is the husband who didn't want another male seeing his wife's unclothedness etc is the first to throw her out when she developed a VVF. Who even says many female doctors want to do gynaecologist, it is a very stressful specialty and is not very compatible with family life. I actually respect my collegues male and female in that specialty cos they try!

All Nigerian doctors according to Nairalanders are fake( INCLUDING ME), so next time any nairalander is ill please look for a hospital with Oyibo doctors. I hear there are plenty Indian, Egyptian and even Chinese doctors all over Nigeria. Please do not come to government hospitals like General hospital, irresponsible , useless Nigerian doctors work there. Better still there are many good pharmacists and experienced Nurses and laboratories around. It is better to be safe than sorry oh!

See as people are rejoicing because of the misfortune of a poor Nigerian who shares the same name with a political appointee and wishing him all kinds of evil. He is not the ministers brother or even a close relation. When her sister was kidnapped last year the police freed her in less than a 3 days, that was when I knew our police work if they want to.

See a urologist. It may be testicular torsion and if you leave it too late you may end up loosing both testicles. It's not too common so many doctors may miss it especially in the army stages. If it is something less sinister thank God. But the only way you will know by seeing the proper specialist.

I to interesting when I read comments of Nigerian-American medical personnel castigating their home based collegues. Let them come home and do the miracles. The Lakeshore Cancer Centre that treated DJ Fola that people have been cursing out doesn't have a single home based consultant. The two Nigerians are both American based while the other 8 are all foreigners based in the US. But now they are practicing in Nigeria and they have become useless Nigerrian doctors according to Nairalanders. I presently am working with a doctor that came for sabbatical from the UK and has been here for a year. When he sees patients privately he charges 3 x what the regular Nigierian collegue charges, for the same procedures done with the same equipment we use. And Nigerians are willing to pay because he is from the UK. He is already fustrated and getting ready to go back to the UK. He cannot understand how we function at all. He was supposed to spend two years but is going back after one year. Please all you perfect oversea doctors come back home and practice I am sure you can find perfect nurses and laboratory and othe staff like yourselves to come and set up state of the heart hospitals which will handle all emergencies without first asking for money or police reports and transform our health sector.

First Sorry about your losses. You however keep mentioning NMA in your post. First patient you repeatedly mentioned the nurses behaviour, NMA has absolutely no control over nurses. Second scenario you mentioned a pharmacist, again NMA has no business with pharmacist. Then you said NMA licenses hospitals once again wrong, NMA does not license hospitals. The only thing NMA has any control over is a doctor. Nurses, pharmacists, laboratories, ing hospitals is no business of NMA a. However if you have a grouse with any doctor, call a lawyer and make a formal report to NMA and he will be made to face a . NMA is a professional body that covers doctors and doctors behavior alone. Nursing council oversees nurses, pharmacist have their own council while hospitals are liscenced by state health boards not NMA. NMA can only discipline a doctor who has a case before its disciplinary council.

Omooba77: Surgery where appropriate and radiotherapy treat the tumour itself and the immediate surroundings. Chemotherapy treats any cancerous cells that have left the vicinity of the tumour and spread to other parts of the body. That is why it is added for most tumours that are more than stage 1. 1 Like |

Folake as I said radiotherapy is very hard on the body because of the way it works. The radio waves kill any fast growing tissue and the fasterthe tissue grows it grows the better it works. Cancer cells are growing extra fast and that is why they are killed off. Unfortunately the skin in your digestive tract (that is mouth , oesophagus stomach etc) are also fast growing but not as fast as the cancer, so many of these cells are being damaged but not as severely as the cancer cells Try to eat a balanced diet, since food is hard to chew and swallow add things like Complan milk to your diet, blend fresh fruits like banana with milk or youghort, or none citric fruits so you get adequate nutrition and vitamins, ask your doctor to prescribe something for the nausea and vomiting.Drink plenty of water, gargle regularly with mild salty water and if you can find it small baking soda. I recommend bone to be applied to sores in the mouth to soothe them before eating. Also be careful of what supplements you tak,e anything with folic acid should be avoided as these feed the tumour. Yes I have seen patients recover from NPC but unfortunately I have seen some reoccur too . You concentrate your energies on staying positive as we always get better results in patients who are not depressed. I know it's not easy but God is your strength. 8 Likes 1 Share |

I just went through the thread today so let me do my bit to educate a bit on Nasopharyngeal carcinoma NPC. NPC is a cancer arising from the skin in an area behind the nose known as the Nasopharynx. It is relatively rare and most doctors not in ENT may never have come across a case before and this makes the diagnosis to be delayed in many cases. Most patients present with a neck swelling first, others have symptoms that may easily be confused with cartarhh that refuses to go away, bulging eyes, difficulty in swallowing and deep headaches. Such cases are rarely diagnosed till they have advanced to the stage where they give other scary symptoms like nose bleed. Patients rarely loose weight at the beginning so this makes many people relax and not suspect something sinister. It affects any age group but in Nigeria is commonest amongst young adults in their 20s and 30s. The treatment is Radiotherapy alone for very early cases and then radiotherapy and chemotherapy for other stages from stage 2 upwards. There is very little surgery that can be done for these patients as the Nasopharynx is so closely related to many delicate structures in the head and the chances of removing the tumor without killing the patient is slim. I can't comment on this patient as I don't have all the details and I couldn't make a prognosis on a social blogsite even if I did. My advice for her is to make sure she completes her Radiotherapy and chemotherapy without a break and then 3 to 6 months later her doctor will need to reasses her. Both radio and chemotherapy are brutal. I tell my patients that at the end they will feel like a trailer ran over them and reversed . I hope my little explanation is of help. I'll keep praying for her. 9 Likes |

When I am going to see my gynecologist I go prepared for a Vaginal examination(VE), if he doesn't do one good, if he does one good. I trust his clinical judgement. The womanly equipment is hidden in the pelvis and the only way to examine them is a VE. Ultrasounds, Ct, MRIs are all investigations which are done after the gynaecologist has made a clinical diagnosis. My gynae is very professional and always has a nurse there when he has to examine any female (the guy is fine and is also afraid that some woman will pounce on him if they are left alone). If you know how many diagnosis of conditions like ovarian cancer, cervical cancer and ectopic pregnancy are missed because a doctor is being bashful, patients would be the ones begging to be thoroughly examined. Just insist there is a chaperon in the room every time your wife is being examined? As much as possible go with her for her antenatal visits. Also a Pap smear should be done once a woman is 21 and ever 3 years till age 65. More so if the female is sexually active. Here in Lagos I get a letter every year reminding me of my Pap smear and I do a complete gynae exam including a VE at the same visit.

See an ENT specialist, you most likely have allergic rhinitis but you may also have some of its complications like polyps or sinusitis compounding your problem. The problem i have with self medication is that by the time symptoms get so severe and patients come to hospital the problem is 10x more difficult to handle. And the typical patient will now expect that the doctor would do a miracle and sort out a now 3,4 year old problem in one visit. As you have been advised, try and avoid anything that triggers the episodes. Allergies are managed not cured but can have very unpleasant complications if managed poorly.

Go to UCH department of Surgery, it will be cheaper than most good private hospitals. It may be a lipoma or something more sinister and the only way to tell for sure is a biopsy. Good luck.

Thank you for your advice. Fortunately she is in boarding school so I beleieve the transition should be easier for her since she will still spend some holidays with us and some with her own family. She is an extremely intelligent child comes in the first 3 positions every term but her grades dropped this last term.I believe partly because she went from primary 5 (I usually frown at that but I didn't want her to be constantly much older than her classmates) but I also wondered if the adjustment also affected her. Sometimes you just need to hear from neutral people to clarify issues ![]() |

My post may be long just bear with me. I have a 12 year old niece who lived with me for 3 years until August last year. Her dad was a distant relative of mine who died some years back and I got to hear that the mum was struggling with 4 kids and not coping so had resorted to sharing her amongst relatives. So I took in this child then aged 8. She was not a house help. I have a set of twins who are still young and my job is unpredictable so I have always had a minimum of 2 househelps, adults paid more than minimum wage. She was in a private school, the kind where they do ballet lessons and learn to play the sax. We had our own share of spats in the house some I believe she was acting her age and some I believe we're as a result of earlier exposure to things like sex. But generally I thought all was well. This was until I came across her diary in May where she wrote about not feeling like part of the family and regretting the fact that she couldnt anything about her father, her mother or even her younger sisters name. I felt really bad for her and a bit upset myself. I then made sure she got ission into a school close to her mother and during the long vacation moved her back to her mums place. I am totally responsible for her upkeep, fees, allowances and all. She spent part of her Christmas holiday with me and will continue to spend some vacations with me. However I can't help feeling like I have abandoned her somehow. Had I known what I do now, when I heard of her mothers plight I would have looked for a bulk sum and given the mother to help her business and chipped in whenever I could. But now I feel like I have disrupted her life somewhat. In my house as the only girl she had her own room, she was allowed a phone and a tablet during holidays and I tried as much as possible to give her the best I could afford. Now her mum is complaining that she complains of everything, her mums house, the neighbors, her sisters accent, the food they eat, the lack of some forms of entertainment she was used too and her Mum is getting frustrated with her. My husband is of no help he just says she is your niece do anything you want I will you. I think this Isthe best for her to grow with her mum, but I can't stop wondering if returning her to her mum is the right thing to do. 1 Like |

At this stage they sleep in 3 hour cycles. During the day because you are awake it feels like she is always asleep and at night when you want to sleep it seems she follows her usual pattern sending you crazy. As she grows she starts sleeping longer stretches at night and staying awake longer in the day. It will . Just tell your wife to try and sleep anytime she sees baby asleep and not try to quickly do chores. Good luck!

Just put on weight, look constantly harassed and frown all the time. Nobody will need to be told you are a stressed married woman. I have been married for almost 15 years and it was just about a year ago I noticed that people were suddenly calling me madam and almost kneeling down whenever they see me. I took a good look at myself in the mirror and realized I had really added a lot of weight, so my next birthday gift to myself and my hubby is to loose weight and look good. He hasn't complained yet but when a guy agrees with you quick quick that you are reing the gym, you use your tongue and count your teeth.
