Let us tell ourselves the truth about local government istration.

I saw results of the local government elections in Edo state where PDP won all the 18 local government chairmanship seats but that was the only expectation and no other way for people who are sincere to themselves.

Has Obaseki performed in office to earn his party victory at the polls? No.

But is it only in Edo state that we all know the outcome of local government elections way ahead of time? No.

With the exception of Kaduna state where opposition party won a few seats, what we call local government election in Nigeria is the most embarrassing fraud I have seen in our democratic process.

But here is the background:

The sequence was the natural process of conducting elections in the local government council areas first, then the state and finally federal since pre-independence until PDP became the ruling party in 1999.

Let me not bore you with lengthy history but let us use the 1999 transition to civil rule as an example.

On Dec 5, 1998, elections were conducted all over Nigeria into the local government councils. On Jan, 9, 1999, elections took place for the state houses of assembly and governors and on Feb 27, 1999, the national assembly and the presidential elections was held.

But in an attempt to sustain PDP in power for as long as it is possible, this commonsensical process was stopped and Obasanjo with the National Assembly brought the cart before the horse and so presidential election was to be held first and then state and finally local government elections. 😆

The thought was that the party should only get to win the federal election and the 'victory' will trickle down to every state, local government area and ward as much as possible.

While I fully that INEC should not be the body that should continue to conduct local government elections, the conduct of the various state independent electoral commission has been a curse to our democracy and electoral process than a blessing.

Let me give you examples and without being partisan.

If local government elections are conducted in Kano state today, Ganduje's APC will not win his ward. Is he not still popular and accepted in his ward?

If today, local government elections are conducted in Ekiti state, Segun Oni's SDP will lose in Ifaki yet that was the party that gave us in APC a run for our money just last year.

And in Abia state where the party from heaven rules, if elections are conducted today to local councils, Orji Uzor Kalu will lose his ward even if LP presents a man or woman of no political value.

But if APC won at the court and NNPP governor is removed and local government elections are conducted, the same Kwankwaso that is a movement in Kano will not win his ward.

In Ekiti, if by any magic, SDP gets to power, Niyi Adebayo, Kayode Fayemi and Ayo Fayose , Biodun and Oyebanji will all not win in their respective ward talk less of Sunday Wale Adeniran winning his ward or even polling unit.

That is the deceit we all call local government election.

So those who argue that we are running a two-tier government are also right because as far as I know, local government councils are a mere extension of governor's office either the chairmen are "elected ' or chosen as caretaker chairmen.

That is why a chairman is sanctioned in Ogun state for asking for his local government fund but a governor can not be so treated if he did same to the president.

But until local government istration is given life, the Nigerian people will continue to live a life that does not measure up to our endowment and that it the truth.

Because in the not too far past, local government councils were constructing drainages, grading roads, running functional local health centers etc at the grassroot where people only see their councillors and chairmen while the big men stay in the various state capitals.

And for local government autonomy to come to play, at least 24 state houses of assembly must the Bill after it's been ed by the House of Representatives.

And that is where the problem lies. The state houses of assembly are also not free to take such important decision by themselves and so except the governor approves it, no state house of assembly will it and that is just the naked truth.

How then do we make local government istration functional for the benefit of Nigerians?

All thanks to Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi for pushing judiciary to this level of unprecedented.

Henceforth, every politician will now make sure they don’t have skeletons in their cupboard or at least get their asses together if they don’t want to face what Tinubu is facing now.

It’s a win-win for Nigeria 🇳🇬

Destroying Age Old Myths About The Nigerian Civil War

Myth one: Yorubas are betrayers

A lot of this angst, which has refused to fade away decades after the dramatis personae exited this world, is centred around a supposed betrayal of Emeka Ojukwu and the Igbos by the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo.

And sadly, this has now become an emotive issue, where fiction has been fed to many young people as fact.

The truth is that Chief Awolowo went on a peace meeting to Enugu, to try to persuade Igbo leaders to adopt a peaceful way out of the crisis that had unfolded in Nigeria after the January 15, 1966 coup and the July 29, 1966 counter coup.

Awolowo met with the leaders of the Eastern Region for two days between May 6-7, 1967. THERE IS A TRANSCRIPT OF THAT MEETING, WHICH WAS PUBLISHED WHEN BOTH AWOLOWO AND OJUKWU WERE ALIVE.

Please note that this transcript was taken from a tape recorded by then Colonel Ojukwu’s own recorder.

I encourage those who are still bitterly accusing Chief Awolowo, and by extension all Yorubas, of betrayal, to please read that transcript.

At the time Emeka Ojukwu wanted Chief Awolowo to follow his lead by announcing the secession of the Western Region after his own declaration of secession of the Southeast, there were tens of thousands of armed Northern troops all over the West. It does not take a genius to guess what would have happened if Awolowo had gone that route.

Moreover, unlike Ojukwu, Chief Awolowo had no control over any troops. He was also not the Governor of the Western Region (Adeyinka Adebayo was then the military Governor). As a result, he had no executive powers. Whatever powers he had were at best residual and persuasive.

Chief Awolowo had earlier called a meeting of Yoruba officers of the Nigerian army, and key officers of Yoruba stock refused to attend, with one of them sending a message to him that he was a Nigerian soldier, not a Yoruba soldier.

So given all of that, it was rather naive for anybody to have expected him to declare the secession of the Western Region from Nigeria.

It would have been like expecting Nnamdi Azikiwe to usurp Ojukwu’s powers as Governor of the Eastern Region, and announce the secession of Eastern Nigeria, and the creation of a new Biafran nation. The Ojukwu we know may have even arrested, and probably executed Zik if he had done that.

If the grudge against Chief Awolowo is founded on the £20 pounds payment to persons of Igbo origin, then I can understand it. But even that grudge is also not well founded. Because the £20 policy only affected those whose bank records could not be verified. I hazard a guess that if another person other than Awolowo was on that seat, the payment may have been £0.

But to hold a grudge against the Yorubas stemming from that Enugu meeting is in my view an injustice to a man who only went there to seek a way to avoid bloodletting.

In any case, have those who hold this view ever considered that the man, Emeka Ojukwu, for whom they hold this torch, after his return to Nigeria on May 18, 1982, ed the National Party of Nigeria, the very same party that was peopled, sponsored and ed by the very same people who prosecuted the Nigerian Civil War against him and Eastern Nigeria?

The NPN was a Northern Party that did not win a single state in Western, Midwestern (Bendel) and the Igbo states of Eastern Nigeria. The same people who founded the NPN were the very same people who advised and perhaps tele-guided Gowon.

In fact, the first National Leader of the NPN was Makaman Bida, a former member of the inner caucus of Ahmadu Bello’s Northern Peoples Congress.

This is the party that Ojukwu ed, contested for election into the Senate (and lost), and campaigned for during the 1983 Presidential election.

Taking all of this into consideration, there is no way the myth of Chief Awolowo, and all Yorubas being betrayers, can stand.
