Tears flowed freely on Saturday as grieving residents of Munga Lalau and Munga Doso communities in Karim-Lamido Local Government Area of Taraba State buried scores of villagers killed by suspected herdsmen.

The communities were thrown into mourning after the assailants stormed the villages around 2am on Friday. Eyewitnesses said the attackers, numbering over 50, invaded the villages on motorcycles and opened fire indiscriminately on sleeping residents.

“We have counted 42 bodies so far, with many still missing,” a soldier who participated in the rescue operation told Sunday PUNCH.

The Chairman of the Munga Youth Forum, Suleiman Joel, confirmed that many people were killed.

He said, “We are still recovering the dead bodies, but I can tell you that the casualty figure is high. These are not isolated killings. It is a calculated extermination. People who returned to their homes based on security assurances have now been killed. What do we tell their families?”

Residents, who spoke to Sunday PUNCH, said the attackers, armed with AK-47 rifles and machetes, moved from house to house, burning homes and killing anyone in sight.

“We didn’t know where to run to,” said Soja Emmanuel, a survivor. “They came around 2am, shooting sporadically. People jumped out of their homes into the bush. Some didn’t make it.”

Families express anger at burial

During the burial on Saturday, some of the victims’ families were filled with sorrow as they recounted the way their relatives were killed.
A community leader, who lost two of his brothers in the attack, Augustine Munga, called for swift government intervention to end the bloodshed and bring the perpetrators to justice.

“The mass burial took place here in Munga Lalau and was conducted by soldiers and other security personnel,” Munga added. Another resident, who lost four relatives, suggested that the attackers were hired by herders to unleash mayhem on the communities.

“We all slept in the bush yesterday. The sound of gunshots that rent the air was beyond conventional herdsmen. We fled to the mountains and returned home this morning to see our houses razed,” he sobbed, struggling to utter words during a phone interview with one of our correspondents.

Aas Kong as APC is in power, human lives means nothing to them. The most ruthless and selfish politicians in the world. Let the herdsmen kill one of their family member, you go we say, the herdsmen killing go stop.

I am a Muslim but seriously I do think a president of Fulani extraction in the future will embolden herdsmen to overrun this country, they are a serious menace to lives and property of all Nigerians even when a Fulani man is president or not.

How long shall we continue with this bloodshed in this country? Open grazing should be banned in Nigeria. These killers have wreaked too much havoc.

Why are you laughing na?

The Chief of Army Staff has found a new method of ending the insecurity in Nigeria by relocating to the biggest hotel in any state affected by insecurity.

He moved from Borno to Benue, now we have a new attack in Taraba, he needs to relocate to Jalingo hotel, from there I learnt there is a new terrorist group in Kwara, so Kwara state government should also book a big Presidential room for him at the best hotel in Ilorin, maybe from there he might be heading to Kaduna hotels....what a wonderful tactics, all hail Tinubu the joker in chief with his owambe appointees cheesy

Its all part of the game plan to relocate people of the sahelian savannah with their cattle and way of lives down South to the sudan savannah and, in the nearest future, the forest belt of Nigeria. But how is this to be done without clearing the natives from these regions? And when these ethnic cleansings commence, how can the game planners gaslight the general populace? How can the gaslighting be done in such a way that the game planners have complete political, religious, military control over the country? So that these cleansings commence without interruption and public outrage, nevermind reprisals.

Fulani intend to wipe out ethnic minorities in the middle belt so that their brothers and kin across West Africa can find a new home to resettle. This plan has the backing of every Fulani in Nigeria including the sultan of Sokoto.

What is this for crying out loud? What exactly is going on with these herdsmen rampage? This is more like an organized invasion of Christian spaces in the northern region. Maybe citizens should be armed to fight back if government is helpless

Bandits/Herders/Terrorists are mowing people down with AK-47 Riffles somewhere, some stupid folks are celebrating a collaboration of Soldiers, Police and DSS in impounding wades of Cartridges in the east, which they hurriedly claim was a supply to IPOB/ESN.
Cartridges which Hunters and Rich men in the East use with their Double Barrel Guns during celebrations.
While I detest the activities of ESN, pictures and videos you see about them, they don't use cartridges but bullets.

The kind of gun one can own in Nigeria with license are pump action rifles. They’re less effective against an assailant using automatic rifles.

Let’s legalize gun use in this country, I swear many people will sit up.

Hmmm. Baya-mulenges.

Tinubu is busy migrating opposition into his APC in prep for 2027. Fulani are being built schools in those settlements. Nigeria can bleed for cows to graze.

APC is a demonic party.

People returned to their homes following security assurances by security agencies, yet they, the security agencies that gave the so called assurances, couldn't protect the villagers from the attackers.

The government and the military are deliberately refusing to end this menace. There is a calculated attempt to exterminate and expel people from their ancestral land and the government is playing politics with the people's lives.
