NIGERIAN international, Taye Taiwo says the costly equaliser conceded by the Super Eagles against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia in Abuja on September 6 in a 2010 World Cup qualifier showed that things were not working well with the team, insisting that the Eagles had all along lacked genuine team ethic.


The Olympique Marseille defender, however, believes that despite the dicey situation Nigeria finds itself in the qualifying series, the country’s World Cup bid is not over yet.


“We’ve lacked a genuine team ethic until now. That goal in the game against Tunisia was the perfect example of what’s not working,” Taiwo told FIFA.com in an exclusive chat. “We need to play together and defend together,” he explained. “The forwards have to help out more defensively and the defenders need to stay concentrated until the final minute.”


The Eagles were on the verge of claiming the maximum three points against the Tunisian Eagles in Abuja leading 2-1 until the 89th minute when the Tunisians equalised to end the game 2-2. The result has now put Nigeria’s qualification for the first World Cup to hold in Africa in the hands of others to decide.


“Everything is still possible. We need to win those two matches. Tunisia will be playing the same teams and we can hope that they ( Carthage Eagles) slip up. Whatever happens, if we don’t win these two games, then we have no chance.


“The World Cup isn’t over for us and the two games to come will be crucial, for the ers and the country. We need to be optimistic and not ask ourselves any questions.” Speaking against the insinuation that most of the Eagles are not patriotic enough, Taiwo said all the players were always proud of playing for Nigeria, submitting that, “We’re all immensely proud to play for the national team.”
