The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has released a former Minister of State for Power, Olu Agunloye, on bail one week after he was detained.

EFCC Spokesman, Dele Oyewale, told Channels Television that Agunloye was released on Wednesday.

The EFCC weeks ago declared Agulonye wanted over an alleged $6 billion fraud related to the controversial Mambilla hydropower project.

The anti-graft agency had urged anyone “with useful information as to his whereabouts” to the agency. The EFCC had in September questioned the former minister over the same issue.

Agunloye was a minister under President Olusegun Obasanjo’s government (1999-2003). He has been at the centre of the controversy about the Mambilla project.

Obasanjo had accused him of fraudulently awarding the contract for the project without the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval. But Agunloye denied the accusations and claimed the former president was distorting facts.

Nollywood actress, Iyabo Ojo, has reacted to the N500 million lawsuit threat against her by Nigerian singer, Azeez Fashola, aka Naira Marley.

In a statement posted on her Instagram handle, the actress declared she has no regrets fighting for justice for the late Ilerioluwa Aloba, aka Mohbad, and his family, despite the criticism she received.

Ojo, who said that she has never bullied anyone and strongly opposes bullying in any form, reiterated her unwavering commitment to achieving justice and fairness for Mohbad.

The actress who came into the limelight in 1998 for her role in the Satanic movie affirmed that justice for Mohbad is dear to her and millions of people around the world.

“I emphatically reject all forms of bullying and for me to bully, it is to continuously denigrate, hurt, and cause harm to others, and that is not me. Stepping on that dress on the show was a way to get talking points for the show for entertainment purposes, and we succeeded. No harm was meant.

“One of my main goals of starring on a reality TV show was to entertain everyone and give you all a show worthy of your time. I made sure that drama was the centrepiece of the show. In the midst of that drama, I may have offended some people and displayed some behaviours that are certain attributes to bullies. For that, I am truly sorry to all that I have offended,” she said.

Ojo maintained that she felt unfairly criticised and labelled a showoff actress for demanding justice for Mohbad.

The Lagos-born actress pointed out that those who know her are aware of her generosity, saying she consistently s people behind the scenes, takes care of them, nurtures them, and uplifts them.

She said reading her daughter [Priscilla Ojo’s] post criticising Naira Marley deeply saddened her heart, adding that she could only imagine the burden it must be for her and her brother to be targeted online simply because of her.

The actress stated that the post moved her as a mother, and she vowed to give the world to her wards. She also expressed appreciation to her husband for his unwavering during the storm.

The actress said, “When we agree, we can live together in peace. Even in our differences, we can learn to be cordial towards each other.”

Background
On December 14th, Priscilla Ojo, daughter of the actress, took to her Instagram handle to defend her mother against Naira Marley’s threat of a N500 million lawsuit over alleged defamation and libel.

She referred to the singer’s legal action as a ‘surprising move’ in light of existing evidence against him, without going into specifics to avoid potentially harmful or controversial details.

On December 15th, Naira Marley’s legal representative, Olalekan Ojo, a senior advocate, released a statement asking the actress to apologise publicly to the singer for her alleged defamatory comments against him.

The singer’s legal team threatened a potential N500 million lawsuit if Ojo did not apologise on Instagram and in a national daily newspaper within seven days.

On September 12th, Mohbad, a former artiste on Naira Marley’s record label, tragically ed away at the age of 27.

In the aftermath of his death, Naira Marley has faced allegations of either bullying Mohbad or orchestrating harassment against the late singer, claims he vehemently denies.

Before his untimely demise, Mohbad had expressed anxieties, pointing fingers at his former label head, Naira Marley, for potential repercussions if anything were to happen to him.

Since Mohbad’s ing, public focus has shifted to Naira Marley and his associate, Balogun Eletu, popularly known as Sam Larry.

Actress Ojo has taken the lead in advocating justice for the late singer.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has stated that the seats of the 27 lawmakers that left the party remained vacant as declared by the new speaker of the house, Rt. Hon. Edison Ehie.

The Public Relations Officer of the PDP in the state, Sidney Tambari Gbara, noted that the lawmakers failed to obey the law, adding that their seats remain vacant.

Gbara said: We are all aware of what is going on in the state and those who are alleging that there is crisis in PDP that led to their defection should prove it.

“I don’t know where the problem is. They are in better position to explain if there is problem in the party or not.

“Yes President Tinubu has done so well to appoint some Rivers sons into positions. Being that as it is, we should all be happy as Rivers people. We have seen appointments, FCT Minister, EDFA, NDDC, Federal Commissioner and other and we believe we will get more.

“On the issues of the decamped lawmakers talking on quorum and no quorum, well I am not a lawyer, but I know that everybody is trying to play to relevance.

“Who is at an advantage must make good use of the opportunity to place himself better. It is politics. It is a game of maneuvering. So any one who has better opportunity moves on.

“Those who defected, their seats have been declared vacant. The truth is that the state must move forward.

“The interest of the state should be paramount. As a party, we have a government in place that is PDP, we must perform so that we can have what to say in the next election.

“We will whatever thing that will make the state move forward. We are strongly giving our to the PDP istration in the state.”

Meanwhile, the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Joseph Johnson, said the lawmakers are caught up with law they failed to obey.

Johnson said: “The interpretation in Section 109 ( 1) (g) and form that every Parliamenterian signs clearly states that if you move form your party to another, you loss your seat. The law stands.

“The law you fail to obey cannot protect you. 27 lawmakers, elected by their constituents decided to walk out of their constitutional responsibility. They went out of their assignment on their own volution, they said they have finished. They took the flag of APC. They bid PDP bye. What are they doing in court?

“They have violated the law and left what they are supposed to do as law makers. They did what they shouldn’t do.

“They signed a form for Parliamenterians that when you leave your party, that you will never be a lawmaker. They violated it. Amaehwule and his co-travellers signed the form.

“Saying that they are still of the Rivers State House of Assembly is a wild goose chase. They are no longer lawmakers.”

Amid the festering political crisis in Rivers State, the National Coordinator, South-South Leadership Forum, Chief Anabs Sara-Igbe, on Saturday said Governor Siminalayi Fubara offered to resign his position before the crisis in the state escalated to the level it currently is.

He said it took the intervention of some Peoples Democratic Party leaders to prevail on him to shelve the idea.

Sara-Igbe, a former spokesperson for the Pan-Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF), said the governor opted to resign because apart from the way forces above him prevented him from asserting his independence, he didn’t have enough control over the state’s funds and had difficulty running his government.

Fubara and his political godfather, Nyesom Wike, who is the current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, have been at war over the control of the state, plunging the state into political crisis.

Speaking in an interview on Channels TV, Sara-Igbe, who is a former Security Adviser to former governor Peter Odili, predicted that more commissioners would leave Fubara’s cabinet because Wike’s loyalists dominated the cabinet, which he said was evident in the way the commissioners had resigned their positions.

He alleged that even after leaving office, Wike still had a say in government operations and how the governor was managing the affairs of the state.

He stated, “What is the problem? Wike has come to tell the world that he was fighting Sim because Sim wanted to take his structure. What is the structure six months after elections; we are not close to elections, so what has structure got to do?

“Let me tell you about the structure; before Wike left government, the state was making over N10bn internally generated revenue (monthly). When he left, the IGR came down to N6bn. And the governor, a former ant General of the state, asked questions and in the process he engaged somebody to look at the books, and the commissioner of finance reported to Wike and the former governor got angry. That is the structure.

“Secondly, the money coming from the federation , Wike tied the money to one project or the other. So, when the money comes, it goes to the banks and they collect theirs from it and pay the contractors. Of course, we didn’t even know the cost of the contracts, so when this governor felt, ‘how will I run a government when I don’t have the resources’, the minister became hostile to the governor and the governor said ‘okay, let me resign if that is the case’. The PDP elders prevailed on him not to resign, thinking it would be messy.

“As soon as that ended, I came on air and advised Nyesom Wike to leave this man alone to govern, allow him, even if he’s your son’. I even went as far as giving him references like the Sarakis. Dr Olusola Saraki brought the son, Bukola, to that seat but when their ideologies did not agree, the son told him to go and rest.”

Sara-Igbe said it was difficult to make a governor subservient in Nigeria, because of the huge influence and power available to the occupiers of the office.

He added, “You cannot make somebody a governor; a very important seat in Nigeria – that was the seat Odili sat and he almost became the president; that was the seat (former governor Rotimi) Amaechi sat and he connived with others to remove a sitting president; that is the seat Wike himself sat and became a superman – and you are asking somebody who is on that seat to be subservient. But the governor is still loyal.

He said the former governor knew about the defection of the 27 PDP Assembly lawmakers to the APC, “he (Wike) is a lawyer, he ought to know that such a move would cost the Assembly their seats”.

When reminded that the lawmakers had said openly that their defection was not engineered by the minister, Sara-Igbe noted, “I am a father to some of them. I know their personal grievances, but they cannot do what they did without the of their godfather. They believe Wike and Sim were having problems and because of that they leveraged that to get at him (Sim).

“Even before the impeachment saga, some were threatening the governor that if he did rubbish they would get him removed from office. But the governor is a calm person, and I believe strongly that this is one man who loves Wike so much and has sacrificed so much for him before he became governor and even after.

“Today, the governor is not disposed to making trouble with the minister. He still sees it as a father and son relationship, but the minister, because of greed, is someone who wants to get everything, trying to take over the two parties, APC and PDP. When somebody is in control and wants power at all cost, it’s not the best, and that is what is leading to some of his problems.”

Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo has sacked 33 directors under his ministry.

Aviation experts on Thursday described the development as a “clean sweep and reversal of the last-minute appointments” made by the immediate past istration of President Muhammadu Buhari when Senator Hadi Sirika was minister of Aviation.

Sirika, on May 23, 2023, a week before the expiration of the Buhari istration, appointed 33 directors and also appointed a new managing director for the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) and Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).

He also created directorates that were hitherto non-existent in all the agencies.

But six months later, all the appointees have been sacked in a major shake-up that caught even those affected unawares.

This came a few hours after chief executives of aviation agencies were relieved of their appointments without prior knowledge of their impending sack.

Daily Trust learnt that most of the Chief Executive Officers were outside the country when the announcement was made and read about their sack on newspaper pages or on social media. Two different events were held outside the country last week with the ministers and the agencies’ heads in attendance.

The first was the 15th International Civil Aviation Negotiation Event in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia and then the ICAO meeting in Canada.

President Tinubu on Wednesday, December 14, through a statement by the Presidential Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, approved the suspension, removal and replacement of the chief executive officers of the agencies under the aviation ministry.

The agencies are FAAN, Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), NAMA, Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET) and the College of Aviation Technology (NCAT).

Kabir Yusuf Mohammed of FAAN was replaced with Mrs Olubunmi Oluwaseun Kuku; NAMA’s Tayib Adetunji Odunowo was replaced with Engr. Umar Ahmed Farouk; NSIB’s Engr. Akinola Olateru was replaced by Mr. Alex Badeh Jr. as the substantive Director-General while NIMET’s DG, Prof. Mansur Bako Matazu, was replaced with Prof. Charles Anosike, and NCAT Rector, Capt. Alkali Mahmud Modibbo was replaced by Mr. Joseph Shaka Imalighwe as Acting Rector. The Director-General of NCAA, Capt. Musa Shuaibu Nuhu, was suspended from office while Capt. Chris Najomo assumes office as the Acting DG.

“Nobody saw it coming,” a source in one of the agencies said.

The Minister of Aviation, Mr. Festus Keyamo, was at a conference of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) along with all the agencies’ CEOs last week.

“None of them had the inkling that their sack would be this soon,” another source said.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court, yet again, adjourned the ex-parte case brought against the federal government of Nigeria by Kogi, Kaduna and Zamfara states.

This came after the apex court, on February 8, granted an interim injunction restraining the federal government from acting on the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)’s February 10 deadline for the use of old 200 naira, 500 naira, and 1,000 naira banknotes.

Godwin Emefiele, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), said, on Tuesday, that the old naira notes had ceased to be legal tender since Friday.

He disclosed this while discussing the apex bank’s currency redesign policy during a visit to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The CBN had extended its earlier set January 31 deadline for the use of old naira notes to February 5, and later to February 10.

Emefiele said that “the situation is substantially calming down since the commencement of over-the-counter payments to complement ATM disbursements and the use of super-agents”.

He added that “there is, therefore, no need to consider any shift from the deadline of February 10”.

The apex bank governor’s statement is in disregard of the Supreme Court’s interim injunction suspending the CBN’s February 10 deadline, but some lawyers think no offence was committed.

The CBN, according to O.O. Nwani, Chairman of Pegasus Legal, was not a party to the Supreme Court’s ruling. “Once you are not a party to a suit,” he said, “the ruling is not binding on you.”

Nwani told FIJ that he was not surprised by Emefiele’s decision. The All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government has a penchant for disobeying court orders, according to Nwani, how much more one that is not binding on it.

He further stated that Section 232 of the 1999 Constitution clearly defined the Supreme Court’s jurisdiction and that the court’s ex parte ruling was not one of those justifications.

Citing Section 20(3) of the CBN Act, Nwani said that the CBN was the autonomous body to decide on issues relating to Nigeria’s currency.

Confirming Nwani’s position, Leke Oyeniran, lawyer and founder of Learned Library Nigeria Ltd., told FIJ that “Emefiele did not run fowl of the Supreme Court’s decision because the CBN was not a party to the case”.

According to Oyenira, the position of the law is clear in that if you are not a party to a proceeding, you cannot be bound by its orders.

“If anybody breached the decision, it is the federal government and federal government has nothing to do with CBN duties,” he added.

According to Oyeniran, the CBN cash policy case does not fall within the original jurisdiction of the Supreme Court but the Federal High Court.

He said the order was not binding on the CBN as the apex bank was not a ministry under the federal government but an established statutory body with a governor and mode of operation.

A REBUTTAL

Re: Oba of Lagos: LP Courtesy Visit

My attention has been drawn to a fictitious “Press Release” purportedly released by me titled “Oba of Lagos : LP courtesy Visit”.

The said deceptive release claimed, among other things that “We informed Oba of Lagos that Peter Obi wanted to come and pay homage to him before our rally in Lagos but Oba said that we should not come”. The fictitious release further claimed that Oba’s reason for not wanting to meet with Peter Obi was that “Oba is not interested in seeing another presidential candidate except Bola Tinubu”.

I wish to clearly state that the fictitious release did not emanate from me, and I never had such a conversation with the revered Oba of Lagos or any of his representatives. Please disregard the release at whatever it represents. Henceforth, please disregard any other release that does not originate from our campaigns official communication channels.

May I once again assure Nigerians that we will continue to run a campaign that is devoid of calumny, and by the grace of God we shall overcome.

Thanks.

The New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP has asked the ruling All Progressive Congress, APC to stop playing the victim card, saying there will be no sympathy votes in the coming general elections.

The stakeholders and ers in Kano state noted that the NNPP remain peace-loving citizens and patriotic as they go about their peaceful campaign rallies across the state.

In a statement, the Chief Campaign Spokesperson of the NNPP in Kano, Sanusi Dawakin-Tofa

He expressed concern over what was described as the latest lies and smearing information allegedly propagated by the APC against NNPP.

The statement reads partly, “We read in some quarters of the media the latest threat from the APC, accusing Kano our party, the NNPP of violence. This is little more than playing victim card by the ruling party whose identity is synonymous to political thuggery and deadly violence against the unsuspecting of the opposition parties in the State.

The new attempt by the APC to deceive the electorates into believing that they are peace-loving failed at a point of planning as it remains fresh in our minds how some ranking leaders of the party and serving political office holders of the frustrated party, APC, snatched ballot box at Gama collation centre of Nasarawa local government in 2019 gubernatorial election that impose Governor Abdullahi Umar Ganduje on the people.”

According to the statement, the new grand plan by the APC is to use their thugs and urchins to impersonate of the NNPP and unleash violence on the people so that they can play victims is unthoughtful and sadistic as the masses contend with current economic hardship.

It further stated, “This is how they think they can win the elections since they have lost popularity with Kano masses and elites. These tactics cannot save them from imminent defeat at the polls in February and March 2023.

“The NNPP is immune to peace and will continue to expose all the sinister plans of the APC towards manipulating 2023 elections as the coming poll is a typical referendum again eight years of bad governance of Governor Ganduje-led istration in Kano.

“We are not surprised by this type of propaganda because APC has lost out already by compensating Nasiru Gawuna and Murtala Sule with the gubernatorial and deputy gubernatorial tickets for allegedly perpetrating illegal disruption of Gama collation center in 2019. Evidence of the incidence has been viral in the public domain through social media.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) to tighten security around the nation’s borders before and after the general elections.

Interior minister Rauf Aregbesola disclosed this in Katsina on Tuesday while inaugurating the Katsina State headquarters of the service.

“The order from President Muhammadu Buhari is that between now and the time we will conclude elections, you must make sure our borders are secured,” Mr Aregbesola said.

The minister charged officers to ensure that illegal immigrants do not create problems during and after the elections.

“The service should live up to the directives of Mr President,” he said.

The minister also tasked them on ensuring the documentation of all migrants.

Mr Aregbesola said that Katsina State had 400 kilometres of border lines and 14 border positions which the service needed to protect.

He said the government was upgrading the capacity of the NIS to control the nation’s borders effectively.

“We are deploying electronic digital technology to ensure 24/7 surveillance of the 5,000 kilometres border lines.

“We have already awarded the contract, so, very soon, the comptroller-general, from his office, will be able to see what is happening anytime at any border point,” he said.

In his remarks, Governor Aminu Masari, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Muntari Lawal, commended the NIS for the project and affirmed the istration’s readiness to the service to secure the nation’s borders.

Also speaking, the State controller, Bello Garba, who reiterated the commitment of officers and men to their responsibilities, said the service currently had 688 officers and men across the state.

The peace accord brokered between the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, and the federal government by the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, involves the payment of a part of the eight months’ salaries withheld by the government to the lecturers, investigation by Vanguard has shown.

A copy of the draft agreement endorsed by Gbajabiamila and the ASUU National President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, sighted by our correspondent, showed that after visiting President Muhammadu Buhari, the Speaker came to meet the national leadership of ASUU and agreed to the payment of a part of the salaries.

The document was dated October 12, 2022 and was titled “Resolution reached between the leadership of the House of Representatives led by the Honourable Speaker, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila and the Academic Staff Union of Universities on 12th October 2022 in the Office of the Speaker.”

The fifth item on the resolution was titled “Withheld salaries,” and it reads thus: The no work no pay policy of government remains a subsisting policy for all industrial actions, but government will on special grounds make a concession to the Academic Staff Union of Universities to pay a part of its salaries during the strike period.”

The grey areas are that it was not stated how many months of the salaries would be paid and when.

The issue of the payment of the salaries was part of the demands made by the union from the government to end the strike.

Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo has directed all staff of his office who are part of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Presidential Campaign Council, PCC, to give their best to the party’s presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu.

Osinbajo issued the directive during a meeting with his staff who are part of the PCC.

Disclosing this, an aide to President Muhammadu Buhari, Ajuri Ngelale, said Osinbajo stressed the importance of the assignment.

Ngelale, who is one of the spokesperson for the Tinubu-Shettima campaign organization, said the Vice President appealed to those concerned to carry out their duties without hindrance.

He also urged of the public to ignore any information stating otherwise.

In a tweet, he wrote: “It must be noted that in a meeting today, H.E. VP @ProfOsinbajo has encouraged all OVP staff — who were privileged to be appointed into the @officialABAT 2023 Presidential Campaign Council — to give their best to the important effort without hindrance. Kindly ignore anything contrary. ”

Recently, APC released its campaign council list

DAILY POST observed that Osinbajo’s name was noticeably missing from the list.

The council list, which comprises 422 , was released by the PCC Secretary, James Faleke, a federal lawmaker.

Osinbajo and Tinubu were said to be at loggerheads following the Vice President’s decision to run for the presidency.

The Vice President was then tagged a traitor for opting to contest the APC presidential primaries alongside Tinubu, who is believed to be his political godfather.

Ahead of the February 2023 presidential elections, five Governors elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Sunday, met in Enugu State.

Inside sources told DAILY POST that the discussion centred on how to deliver the Labour Party Presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi in 2023.

The Governors are: Samuel Ortom of Benue State, Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, Okezie Ikeazu of Abia State and the host Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

According to the insider, the five governors were moved to back Peter Obi’s candidacy because they are not comfortable with the PDP flagbearer, Atiku Abubakar.

DAILY POST reports that the decision of the governors may not be unconnected to the crisis rocking the main opposition party.

The crisis, which was birthed by the face-off between Wike and the former vice president, had degenerated despite efforts by party stakeholders to quell the cold war.

Former Secretary to Government of the Federation, Dr Babachir Lawal has said that the Northern Christian politicians remain steadfast on their stand for justice, equity and fair play in the 2023 political dispensation for the overall interest of the nation.

Lawal opined that any nation or political dispensation built on injustice would crumble because justice and equity settle all other disputes.

In a statement issued on Sunday, Lawal pleaded with Nigerians to understand the position of the Northern Christian politicians on the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Lawal explained that neither Bola Tinubu as APC Presidential candidate and APC as a political party has ever seen anything wrong in the choice of same faith for the 2023 Presidency to make peace or assuage the feelings of Northern Christian Politicians.

“Quite a number of Nigerians have reached out to Rt Hon Yakubu Dogara and I and to some of the leaders in our eminent group of Northern Christian politicians to sheath our swords and instead go for negotiations with the APC.

“I now want to respond to this. We have so far not taken the road to reconciliation because in the first instance, neither the APC as a party nor its presidential candidate has bothered to seek us out for reconciliation even though early on, our doors were left open for such.

“We only get to learn of their views through vile propaganda in the media courtesy of their rabid attack hogs whom they have procured in abundance.

There are of course some “Christian” turncoats and “Judases” who, driven either by moral turpitude, poverty or greed, have hired themselves out as agents and spoilers of this noble Christian course.

“To this group, I wish to recommend the study of the biographies of Judas Iscariot and Ahithophel in the Bible. Be careful to note how their lives ended.

“It seems that Bola/Kashima’s preferred approach is to attempt to counter our position through insults and sponsored fake Christian organizations in order to create the impression that there is a division within the Christendom on this matter.

“Needless to say, this tactic has failed woefully. They are now the but of jokes in church gatherings all over the country.
“Unknown to them Church history emphatically records that Christians are more united in of adversity and persecution as now being propelled by this Muslim-Muslim ticket of the APC.

“This approach has also portrayed the duo as arrogant and pitiable people whilst also exposing them to the public as people with unimaginable deficiencies of noble character.

The reality is that for each minute that this same-faith ticket duo have spent on their goebellsian propaganda, they have ended up spending several hours more trying to rebut the controversies that they create in the process.
