Lagos—Oba Rilwan Akiolu of Lagos, yesterday, ed the proposal by the state Assembly for the relocation of the popular Mile 12 market which witnessed misunderstanding between Hausa and Yoruba traders last week.

Oba Akiolu According to him, the relocation should however be embarked upon if it will bring peace and tranquillity to the communities. His view was also echoed by Oba Samuel Oloyede of Ikosi who noted that the call for the relocation of the market by the State House of Assembly was a step in the right direction.

Oba Akiolu also requested that Governor Akinwunmi Ambode should severely punish the perpetrators of the clash. Akiolu made the demands at a stakeholders forum organised at the Iga-Idugaran, Lagos Island for residents and stakeholders in the communities.

He lamented that the clash which further led to the destruction of property and displacement of residents was not acceptable. He described ethnic clashes in the state as one too many, urging residents to co-exist with one another, saying that Lagos is a melting pot of ethnic nationalities in the country and wondered why some people incessantly attempted to threaten the diversity of the state.

The monarch urged traditional rulers in the communities to give true leadership to their subjects and swiftly intervene in disputes before they escalate. Earlier, the Sarkin Hausawa of Lagos State, Alhaji Aminu Yaro, lamented that the incident was unfortunate and promised to constantly engage the leaders of Arewa communities on peaceful co-existence with their host.

His words “The incident was unfortunate. We will do our best to talk to everybody on how we can handle things better to avert this kind of problem.” Oba Samuel Oloyede of Ikosi on his part, thanked Akiolu for holding the meeting, saying it was an opportunity for stakeholders to strategise and find lasting peace at Mile 12.

When the market is relocated to Ikorodu, will it solve the issues of ethnic clashes or is it that Govt thinks it's better to attack Ikorodu residents.
This move while laudable does not tackle the main reason why there are clashes.

No sir, he isnt. The statement credited to him doesnt sound like a "king" who publicly gives fyck about his people being overtly slaughtered by visitors in their house.

All I see is a man whose house was invaded by masquerade, he runs in his ceiling, stays there and keeps asking his wife and children "have they gone, have they gone"? grin grin

While the relocation is a good idea, they should think of the pressure ikordu will have due to inflow of people especially in of traffic.

The traffic now sef na die, not to talk of having the whole state food market in ikorodu

despite the fact that freedom of speech is boldly written in our constitution we should learn how to control the ourselves while commenting on any issue, abusive word of this nature is a taboo in Yoruba land to his royal Highness, the younger one this days making use of online like nairaland to insult to elderly ones old enough to born your father, if you like you can call your own eze in your remote village ndi ara bt never say that to my King again (emi o ni ki gambari ma sun rara sugbon ko ma ki baba temi) learn to respect your host shikena.

Ur headache.

Host is respected only in parasitic relationship not mutualistic one existing between Igbo and Yorubas in no man's land and other Yoruba states.

Hmmm, relocation to where? Lagoon or island? Is that the lasting solution? Will Yoruba and Hausa will not cross path again with the relocation? Are they saying they forbid one tribe (either Hausa or Yoruba) to enter the market where the market will be reallocated to? Will the Hausa ppl be banned or denied from the market? Cos we know they are the core supplier of goods from the north.
