This is a very important question.
When does evening even start?
You'll see someone greeting you "Good evening" at 4pm.

At 7pm, someone will tell you "goodnight"

At 8pm too, good evening.

Let's settle this once, and for all please.

Good evening - a greeting

Goodnight - a farewell

Therefore the difference is in the context the words are being used...

In Nigerian parlance,

goodnight is generally used to bade greetings when departing for the night.

Good afternoon is from midday to when the sun starts to set.

Once the sun starts to set, it's good evening. Say 5pm-sh. Earlier than that, at 4,4:30pm is not out of place.

In Nigerian parlance, good evening stretches well into the evening/night. People can be ing by at 10pm and greet each "Good evening".

Goodnight is not used in same way as good morning and good afternoon. When two people are meeting at 9pm, they don't see themselves and greet each 'goodnight'. No. It's a 'good evening '.

In fact, good night is only used to bade greetings when departing for the night, after earlier greeting themselves good evening when they met. Good morning starts again at midnight.

I can be sitting out at 9,10pm and say "I am having a nice evening". But by morning I can refer to that same time as "last night"

Just leave us alone in Nigeria.

Good evening: (normal greetings), starting from 4pm to 11: 59pm

Good night: (farewell greetings) starting as early as the night approach to 11: 59pm, especially when you are not meeting that person that night again.

The difference between "good evening" and "good night" lies in their usage, timing, and context:Good Evening:Used as a greeting to acknowledge someone in the evening, typically from late afternoon (around 5 or 6 PM) until night.Implies the interaction is happening during the evening hours and does not necessarily signal the end of a conversation or meeting.Example: You might say "Good evening" when meeting someone for dinner at 7 PM.Good Night:Used as a farewell or to wish someone a restful night, typically when parting ways or going to sleep.Implies the end of an interaction or that the day is winding down, often used late at night or when someone is retiring for the evening.Example: You might say "Good night" to family before going to bed.In summary, "good evening" is a greeting for the evening hours, while "good night" is a farewell associated with bedtime or leaving for the night.
