A prosecution witness, John Adetola, on Monday told the Lagos Special Offences Court in Ikeja that he did not document the delivery of $400,000 in cash to the embattled former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Godwin Emefiele.
Adetola, the seventh prosecution witness, who served as executive assistant to Emefiele, said he provided no call logs, messages, or receipt to his claim during the investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.
Emefiele and his co-defendant, Henry Omoile, are facing 19 counts bordering on alleged bribery and corrupt demands totalling $4.5bn and ₦2.8bn, brought by the EFCC.
Testifying before Justice Rahman Oshodi, Adetola said he acted on instructions from Eric Odoh, who allegedly asked him via WhatsApp in 2018 to collect the money from former CBN Director of Information Technology, Mr. John Ayoh, and hand it to Emefiele in Lagos.
“In 2018, I can’t the date, Mr. Eric Odoh sent me a WhatsApp message that I should collect $400,000 from John Ayoh and give it to the former CBN Governor when he came to Lagos. I went to Ayoh’s house in Lekki, collected an envelope, and gave it to the governor,” Adetola told the court.
When asked why he did not document the transaction or provide any proof, he said“I did not see any need for it.”
Under cross-examination by Emefiele’s counsel, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), Adetola confirmed that he was not under prosecution and had not struck any immunity deal with the EFCC.
He also itted that in his statement to the EFCC, he did not mention any communication with Emefiele about the $400,000.
“I told the EFCC everything I knew in respect of the alleged financial crimes,” he said.
Adetola further revealed that he spent 11 days in EFCC custody, during which he was not brought face-to-face with either Emefiele or John Ayoh.
He acknowledged that the EFCC confronted him with WhatsApp printouts related to the alleged transaction, but he maintained that he had no evidence of with Emefiele about the money delivery.
He reiterated during re-examination by EFCC counsel Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN) that he saw no need to document the cash transaction.
“I did not see any need for it,” he restated.
Adetola, who holds a Higher National Diploma in Secretarial Studies and is a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, explained his duties as executive assistant.
“My direct boss is the 1st defendant. The 1st defendant is the head of the secretariat, and I report directly to him,” he said, referring to Emefiele.
During further cross-examination by Yinka Kotoye (SAN), counsel for the second defendant, Henry Omoile, Adetola itted he had no dealings whatsoever with Omoile in connection to the cash delivery.
At the close of the testimony, Justice Oshodi discharged the witness and adjourned the matter till today (Tuesday) for continuation of the trial.

Revelations from Emefiele’s court case shows the high level of corruption in high places in Nigeria.
Until embezzlement of public funds is punishable by death, we may still continue to wallow in this cesspit of corruption.
Imagine some civil servants having close to 1bil Naira in their savings from proceeds of corrupt practices 🙆

Corruption the bane of our society...imagine how many states and villages would have been impacted positively if the money was spent on infrastructure.
The corruption going on currently....Emeifele own would be a child's play.

Emefiele, it might be better to plead guilty, return everything you illegally acquired and return home or start serving your jail term.
It is almost two years, imagine going through trial for three years, getting jailed for 28 years. If you go to jail now, you'd spend 26 years instead by 2051, rather than spending 26 years by 2052 if you are jailed next year. It is always good to start serving your jail term early.
Plead guilty, and do a plea bargain. By the time they psychologically damage you, you might even lose the will to live.
You messed up by toying with people's lives and businesses while repainting the naira. All the revelations against you demonstrate you were an amateur in corruption. You wanted to collect money, didn't you have someone to send to collect it or ask them to drop it in the booth of a car in your village? Then you foolishly acquired more than 700 properties right at the heart of where you could easily be caught. You couldn't even cover your tracks. I do not you, but you messed up.

Anytime a case of stupendous corruption from the istration of Baba Buhari comes to light I wonder how he sleeps peacefully at night, I laugh when people used to call Jonathan clueless, please can anyone borrow me a word that's worse than clueless to describe corruption under the nose of Buhari? Meanwhile I understand that some of his ministers like Malami wealth is worse than emefiele

Exactly, I don't really know why people looking for the unthinkable when actually we will all die one day. So if he build 753 Mansion as CBN governor, so what will he acquired when he eventually won the presidency
The most painful part of Nigerians in our system of corruption is that they see emefele as being smart ( he no carry last) while anyone that refused to chop (embezzle) when in office or having the opportunity are seen to be fools (mumu)

If you don't know why ebilokan has failed in 26 years of high revenues and loans to do a tiny fraction of what Jakande did in just four years before he was overthrown and jailed by Buhari, how do you expect us not to continue wallowing in the cesspit of corruption? How is that possible
Splashme: The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.
Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.
The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.
Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”
The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.
Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.
He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

Why should the CBN office be political or acting like a political party?
