Help! Help!! Help!!!

Hello Nairalanders,
I have a CGPA of 2.96/5.0 (psychology) graduated 2021.
I applied to UMassDarthmouth for research psychology and Wayne state for counseling psychology, I almost applied to southern Mississippi but they don’t accept unofficial transcripts and I didn’t know till the deadline was close.

UMassD denied me ission and I’m still waiting for a decision from Wayne state
I sent my application for both on February 13 and the deadline was February 15.

I want to reapply for spring or fall 2026 and I need advice on how to boost my chances of getting ission and funding.

I recently used the free WES calculator and it gave me 2.93/4.0, I don’t know how accurate it is so that I can just go ahead and pay for WES evaluation, I thought of writing GRE but seeing the past questions alone gives me anxiety. I’m also trying to see if I can publish my final year project in a journal, (UMassD told me that I don’t have a publication and my statistics grade is poor hence the ission denial)
I work in telecoms, and my job role isn’t directly related to psychology.

Considering my situation, please what is the way forward and how do I go about it?
What schools can I possibly apply to that’ll guarantee ission and funding for 2026?

Thank you 🙏

A friend of mine was suppose to have his interview today in Lagos. But during the document check before you are allowed to enter the hall for the interview he was told the system is not pulling out his name. The paper they use in checking names, his name was there but close to it, it was showing NO RECORDS. And he was giving a paper stating that the barcode of the DS-160 bla bla. however that was not the issue as the ID in his DS-160 matches that of his appointment letter. What do you think went wrong and how can he avoid such situation from repeating itself?

Your question is like a puzzle going forth 'n back. But what i can summarise is that your MRV payment was very likely not able to be confirmed by the embassy even after you must have booked an appointment.

This happens especially if you do card payment or transfer. Some card can be successful but retracted and some transfer might not get to the embassy while the owner is debited.

Hence my only choice of payment is physical bank deposit.

NOTE.
1. Fill another ds 160 and submit at a go, don't fill it half way
2. Pick the embassy location you have chosen in your ds 160 as your interview post.
3. Go and pay mrv physically in the bank.
4. Pay your SEVIS fee
5. Sign and date your I 20. 👍

To be more explicit, as regards Ds160 and visa application , I just applied for change of name on my Int’l port which I will be collecting the renewal before end of May, can we still use my current port to fill necessary informations or wait till the port comes

Yes. Go ahead and book your appointment with your current port . You will eventually fill another ds 160 and update it in your avits profile then attend the interview with both old and new ports. 👍

Pay another MRV and SEVIS fee Why?
When the old fees are still valid.

I believe it's just the normal system error that occurs, I don't think its related to the payment.

Hi Sir.
All F1 visa applicants can (85% of the time) secure an appointment dates before their resumptions. They have 5 (times) reschedule option and if that does not work they have the last joker of expedite (emergency) appointment which they can apply for .

F1 visa applicant also have the grace to look for appointment dates elsewhere (if there is strong proof of no available dates in their countries) but such countries has to be your familiar terrain (eg you have friends or relatives there or you have lived or worked there before or you are married to a citizen of that country etc). ** Otherwise you might be label as a forum/consulate shopping.

Note: Ghana is like a sister to Nigeria in your preference above and it is also an anglophone country. [b]But the best place to attend your US visa interview is in your country of origin. 👍

First Lady. Your question was not clear . Did they send the boy away ? Did they ask him to go and reschedule? If they did not ask you to reschedule he has missed the appointment. Cool down and tell us what really happened. That question was not clear i only used an idea based on NO RECORD found. 👍

NOTE:. My recommendation is for those who want to start afresh so pick your own from the answer. Every answer on Nairaland is not for one person.

thanks a lot chief. however, my situation is a bit dicey. I already applied for an emergency appointment and got a date last week but on getting there I was told my ds160 barcode did not match and I would have to reschedule. I am currently trying to reschedule but I can get any date closer and my start date is ending of this month. also. I cannot request for another emergency appointment since I've already done so once with my present application. what would you suggest?

VISA APPROVED ✅✅✅

My interview was at 3:30pm but Charle sakeov traffic jam I went early around 1:30pm. The driver understood the assignment so he used some lungulungu bi. Got there before like 2pm koraaa.
I just decided to stand outside a lil bit till 3pm before I enter. I almost missed my interview had it not been this police officer that asked what I’m standing here for. He was the one that told me they had already called in 3:30 people. I was kinda shocked cos how can 3:30 people be already in at 1:30pm ??
I checked in did all my stuffs then comes the interview proper. It was some slim white man. He talks very fast Charle. He will just be nodding to anything you say but he asks plenty questions 😂😂😂

Interview proper.

VO: so you studied Mathematics during undergraduate?

ME: sorry I ddnt study Mathematics, I studied Mathematics with Economics, it’s a combined major. I quickly added when I completed and what I have been doing so far.

VO : that’s strong. What are you going to study?

ME: I’m going to study Master of science Mathematics……he cuts in. There I knew the guy wants short answers.

VO: at where ?

ME: at the university of Texas at El Paso……….he cuts in again

VO: Why university of Texas at El Paso?

ME: because of the top ranked mathematics program…….. VO cuts in again

VO: Would you be doing research?

ME: yes. I would be conducting research in the area of mathematical biology. Math biology is the use of maths models and analysis to study biological systems. It’s applicable in Neuroscience and studying of infectious diseases….. VO cuts in

VO: epidemiology

ME: yes

VO: I can see you have funding how did you get it?

ME: after submitting my application, I was interviewed by A, B and my supervisor who researches in the area of maths biology, after the interview I came out as one of the students that qualified for this competitive funding.

VO: what are some of the papers your supervisor has published??

ME: come again please….😂😂 just to think of something. In my head I was like which American researcher didn’t publish a paper on COVID -19?? Thank God I had deep knowledge in Maths biology. Like I don die. The man seemed to know about epidemiology.
I quickly constructed something for COVID-19………he was nodding😂😂😂
I constructed another one for HIV………still nodding 😂😂😂
Charle lie with confidence ooo

VO: that congratulation thing 😂😂😂 didn’t hear anything till he asked
Have you been to the desert before??

ME: no, this is going to be my first time at the desert.

VO: well enjoy your stay and congratulation once again .

ME: thank you sir

Sometimes you need to be smart and think fast or should we attribute to luck? We it ended in praise for this applicant

Yes, he was not interviewed and asked to reschedule after 2 business day.
If you have gone to the Lagos embassy before, you know that the first process is to queue outside then you will be called inside based on your appointment time.
Next step: when your inside, you go through document check, where they check your documents and confirm your name on their list and system to know if your to be interviewed on that day, before you will be directed to the main interview hall.

That was were my friend had issue, they said his name was not reflecting on the system, and on their paper the name was there but it was showing NO RECORDS found. And I don't know if anyone else had face such before, I was just wondering what would be the cause and how to avoid such for next time sake?

I have been to the Lagos and Abuja embassies more than 20 times 😊. I got everything you have written there.

Okay he should to his avits profile and reschedule after 2 days based on what you said the embassy told him. No need to be worried then. 👍

** The only thing that could have caused it is unconfirmed payment or he missed the initial appointment but let us forget about that.

** It may also likely caused by mismatch ds-160 code.

Yes. By so doing the embassy knows your travel itinerary, departure/ arrival schedule and can shuffle availability of dates for you . The U.S embassy themselves mentioned it categorically on their website that " Do not initiate appointment schedule on avits if you have not completed your ds 160.

If need be for an update you can always fill another one and update. Even if you are undecided just complete your first ds 160 first with feasible information. 👍

I have my visa interview in few hours and not sure if I need to book the OIS pickup before or after the interview?

Also, are there still DHL pickups available? If I don’t book OIS will it be automatically sent to DHL? What are the typical pickup times for all pickup options. Thanks

Teen.
Pick free delivery in your post location (DHL/OIS ) and after the outcome of your visa interview you can wait for the delivery or change delivery option to (paid) If you want it faster or to another state.

Your major concern is for your visa to be delivered either OIS or DHL.. They both work in tandem but OIS is the major decision maker, they can bring it or send it to DHL . All you need is safe delivery. 👍
