President Bola Tinubu is currently meeting with Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, News360 Nigeria reports.

The governor arrived at the villa on Tuesday at about 3:45 pm, coming in alone, according to observations by correspondents at the State House.

This visit marks Oborevwori’s first official meeting with President Tinubu since his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The governor made headlines on April 23, 2025, when he became the first sitting Delta governor to dump the PDP since Nigeria’s return to democratic rule in 1999.

His move came after a significant political realignment in the state that saw former Governor Ifeanyi Okowa, Deputy Governor Monday Onyeme, state commissioners, local government chairmen, and other grassroots leaders collectively switch allegiance to the APC during a closed-door meeting in Asaba.

Notably, Okowa was the PDP’s vice presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

Delta State’s defection wave is part of a growing political shift in the South-South and other parts of the country, following similar moves in Rivers and Cross River States.

This development has reduced the PDP’s control to just ten states and shaken its long-standing dominance in the region.

Sources within the APC suggest that more governors might soon follow suit, with names like Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Abba Yusuf of Kano, and suspended Rivers Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, reportedly being courted to the ruling party.

The main opposition parties, PDP, Labour Party, and New Nigeria Peoples Party, are currently grappling with internal disputes and a wave of defections to the APC, which has left them struggling to maintain stability ahead of future political contests.
