Tesla CEO Elon Musk said he would soon be spending less time with the Trump istration after first-quarter earnings fell short of expectations.

Net income for the quarter was down 71% after a decline in vehicle deliveries, with Tesla battling growing competition from foreign brands, shifting trade policies and growing backlash to the brand after Musk aligned himself with the Trump istration.

"There are some challenges, and I expect that this year will be, there will probably be some unexpected bumps this year," Musk said during a Tuesday earnings call. "But I remain extremely optimistic about the future of the company."

The slump comes as Tesla, along with other automakers, adjust to auto tariffs imposed by President Donald Trump. In a Tuesday financial report, Tesla said “rapidly evolving trade policy” has impacted the global supply chain and the company’s cost structure.

While Tesla assembles its vehicles in the U.S., the automaker is exposed to tariffs because it imports parts from other countries.

"I've been on the record many times saying that I believe lower tariffs are generally a good idea for prosperity, but this decision is fundamentally up to the elected representative of the people, being the president of the United States," Musk said. "I'll continue to advocate for lower tariffs rather than higher tariffs, but that's all I can do."

Tesla also noted that “changing political sentiment” could have an impact on product demand in the near term. The company has faced backlash after Musk began work with the Trump istration's DOGE, the initiative that has fired tens of thousands of federal workers.

Dealerships have suffered vandalism and protests, and polls from Pew Research and CNBC show roughly half of Americans have negative views of the billionaire tech mogul. Shares had plummeted, ending Tuesday about 50% down from their December peak. And first-quarter deliveries were down 13% from a year ago, although Tesla said that was due in part to the company losing production time as it updated factories to produce the new Model Y.

It serves him well

The arrogance with which he went about the whole DOGE thing, and his words harshly criticizing basically every government employee. The sledge hammer approach to downsizing. Did he think the people will not look for ways to get at him?

only God knows what will happen to him and his businesses when another istration comes in and start investigating him, Never mix business and politics

He will learn the hard way

Democrats want to punish him by spreading hate against them for shutting down their cash cows like USAID, VOA and big pharma vaccines and for not stifling free speech on Twitter

The biggest mistake Elon Musk made was publicly identifying with Donald Trump. Perhaps Elon Musk doesn't care about what happens to his companies anymore.

He needs to take a class from our own Dangote who cannot publicly identify with any politician because he knows that doing so comes with consequences. He works with every politician in power.

Because you are broke doesn't mean everyone is.

Based on your logic, only billionaires should be able to talk about Elon.
What a very shallow way of seeing world issues. All you see is money and nothing else.

Why are people angry that Elon is cutting down government waste? He has always been against government waste. Why should a Nigerian be happy, seeing the contributions of USAID to destabilising the country so far?

If the profit loss was strictly competition from other brands, then it's welcome because it will make him fix up his prices to compete. EV, just like Solar, is the future. Space Travel is the future. Robotics is the future. Seamless travels is the future. Fast Satellite Internet is the future.

Elon has his hands in all of these pies. If Tesla EVs are taking a hit, others are not as well. Nigeria, for example, is seeing more investment in Starlink Internet.

We saw on video, criminal elements defacing other people's cars, criminal elements vandalizing Tesla shops, and someone with decency is happy about that? Despite the billions they're saving the country, thereby generating revenue for other important schemes? That's just blue wall fighting back.

Nah. I refuse to be part of this as a Nigerian. We've seen government waste money with careless abandon and we certainly need a DOGE to sweep through our books.

We saw 10 billion naira earmarked for Solar installation. That is enough to assemble 10mW of uninterrupted power storage alone, absolutely all expenses covered. Is that a power substation or just for Aso Rock? Because Aso Rock cannot consume more than 500kW in an hour, so what's all that budget for 200 times more for? Armageddon?
