It is not a secret that one of the major reasons some people weddings, child dedications, birthday parties and other events is because of souvenirs. This is because party souvenirs aren’t just mere gifts anymore, they are now statements. Society Plus takes a look at some of the “wildest” gifts that have been given at some events

iPhones and cars

Yes, Nigerians also gift guests iPhones and even cars at weddings. At the November 2017 wedding between socialite, businesswoman and CEO of Sayaveth Interiors and Hotels, Ehigozie ‘Ehi’ Ogbebor; and the Ijaw “big boy”, Kenneth Bramor, hosted in Benin, Edo State, guests were given iPhone Xs, while two guests won two cars via a raffle. 200 fabrics worth N150,000 each were also handed out

Similarly, at the wedding of Faith Osakwe, former President Goodluck Jonathan’s daughter, gold-plated iPhones were distributed.

Live chickens

At actor, Alesh Sanni’s party in Lagos, guests were given live chickens with pink ribbons as souvenirs.

Bags of pepper

Perhaps to tell guests “thank you and eat fresh”, Toyin Abraham shared packs of fresh pepper at the remembrance ceremony of Iyabo Ojo’s mother. The pepper were in custom bags with the deceased’s image. At another event, guests were given baskets of fresh red tomatoes and peppers.

Petrol

To show that there is nothing some Nigerians will not share to make a statement. At yet another party in Lagos, petrol was distributed in 10-litre kegs as souvenirs. The organiser of the event, Chidimma Ogbulu, who gave the gifts was later convicted for such a dangerous act. It is important to note that the fuel was distributed during a time of fuel scarcity in the country.

Herbal medicine

Some hosts go the extra mile to ensure their guests don’t go home sick, so they include bottles and kegs of herbal medicines to help them flush their system. This was distributed at a wedding in Ibadan, Oyo State.

Plantain, bread, yam and oil

Guests who are lucky to attend certain parties needn’t worry about going hungry for a long time, as foodstuffs of all kinds are shared at some parties. At one wedding, guests were given plantain, yam and vegetable oil.

At the wedding of content creator, Neekah, loaves of bread and eggs were shared as “thank you” gifts.

Among other things, guests also get spaghetti, toothpaste, toothpicks, noodles, salt, and sugar.

Some socialites have even upgraded to giving out electronic devices such as microwaves, blenders, rechargeable fans and lamps, and other items. These gifts are often branded with the photos of the celebrants.

These days, movie premieres are another avenue for gifts to be showered. Gifts such as human hair and other beauty items are circulated.

Very creative.

Sharing of petrol(PMS) at an owambe is a no no for me.

The gifts are actually souvenirs and engrained into the Yoruba culture. Our parties are incomplete if we don't share gifts.

The petrol souvenir is a risky move... I guess the celebrant was chasing clouts with people's life cos he/she knew that would be the talk in town due to the fuel scarcity at the time....

Souvenirs are good, at least they are now upgrading from the plastic bowl and detergent they do share back then, cos I could my mon bringing stuffs like that from parties she attended while we were young... grin

Although not a souvenir, I saw a party video where guests were offered wine (or smoothie) in that traditional lantern frame.

I was like: "Osalobua meh!"

Na so nah! Lol. Seun wants to use the antispam bot to clear the way for Tea-nu-boo in 2027, cos you won't be able to speak against him when the election is near.

In this country? And we complain of inflation on products, yet some people spend extra vagantly on just to oppress the poor, 🤔🤔🤔
