The Lagos State Government announced that the Independence (McEwen) Bridge would be closed from from Wednesday, 19th March, to Monday, 26th May, 2025, but today is the first day that motorists have really felt the impact of the closure. Motorists used the Five Cowrie (Falomo) Bridge and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge as alternatives and the traffic from these bridges backed up to the Third Mainland Bridge. The most affected streets are Akin Adesola and Ozumba Mbadiwe Streets on Victoria Island, Alfred Rewane (Kingsway) Road, Awolowo Road, Alexander Avenue, Gerard Road and Bourdillon Roads in Ikoyi, iralty Way, Freedom Way and the Lekki-Epe Expressway in Lekki.
