Should he lie that he has experience when he doesn't have experience? That is how he will go and embarrass Himself or bungle things when it comes to executing. Why not just apply for internships or entry-level roles to start building experience?

I didnt say the person should lie. One thing you need to know about Job hunting is that you need to tailor your cv to the role in question. No one says you lie. It is possible that the person has gotten some skills in data analytics but the CV is not tailored to reflect that.

Why would anyone hire a data analyst when AI tools can do your job far better than you and almost for free?
Bossman(m): 3:31pm On Feb 18
Well said. I have been in this industry for a very long time and this is so true. People jump into tech for the financials primarily and that is a recipe for failure. You really have to love and understand problem solving in order to be successful in this field. While jobs may have dwindled a bit since the early 2000's, there are still tons of jobs out there for people with the right skillset.

MT:

Obviously you do not understand tech.

You have not worked with tech at an enterprise level.

You are still thinking of using code to develop a calculator solution. It is more and deep than that. So you expect a company like first bank to subject their code to chat gpt. Chat gpt simply make life a bit easier but most codes being churned out require refactoring and understanding of design principles and patterns.

The first step to failing in tech is to go into it for the financials alone. It’s a sure way to failure.

Companies in the US and Europe still recruit the best hands . There’s something lacking in your skill set if you are not getting interviewed.

Tech is an art and you need to learn the fundamentals. I get enough invites all over the world with relocation package that I even choose to ignore

Network with other techies and communities, like whatsapp groups. Lots of job opportunities are posted on there and you can get in easily through recommendations.

This is a very good topic and I commend the OP. Discussions of such topics should be promoted more on this platform. Well even abroad this seems to be the case. But try Project management and Business system Analysts roles. The story might be different.

85% of tech jobs in Nigeria is based on recommendations
Only few can be gotten via normal job applications process

That, exactly, is the point! Who knows you as an ICT person skilled enough to add value!

I want to ask, is writing also a tech job?

And i want to use this medium to ask this. How do one make some profits from writing? What way or process can one use writing to hustle?

The noise about tech got into my head and I quit my 8-5 job. Though the 8-5 job was becoming stressful and toxic, I couldn't cope and had to leave.

I had saved some funds and learned data analytics. Now here is where the issue lies.

I've applied to more than a thousand jobs and I keep getting rejections.

My hope was to get a remote job but I'm not seeing it coming.

Is tech all about noise or it's just saturated?

While learning , we were told a data analyst earns 30k USD annually. I'm just getting tired and frustrated

A lot of companies are begining to develop more efficient ways of solving their problems, there is also a rumoured financial crisis coming soon and with the entrance of AI, a lot is changing in the tech world, as a result of these changes a lot of companies are going to have to freeze employment. Data analysis of instant is something that AI can do a lot better than a human being. Research on how AI can help you do data analysis better and faster and rework your CV making it your core skill.

All jucy jobs are on recommendation
In short any employment opportunity in Nigeria is based on recommendation.

Even teaching , security nannyjob

Nigeria is not a country to seek employment without proper networking.

But the truth is,

Almost all tech jobs can be automated now with AI,
The speed with which it's application is increasing begs the question will there be jobs in the nearest future?

I WAS emphasis on was a graphic designer and web developer looking for paid gigs online,
Until I ed ChatGPT then realized my skill will become obsolete soon from what chat got could do as at the time,

Today AI is making videos, paintings, websites even cloning and maintenance,

Now who will pay for something that can be done almost free with AI

The question now is, are there tech jobs that'll always be beyond the capacity of AI and thus require human input?

Thanks for sharing. I thought I was doing some thing wrong. I can't wait to leave my job either but waiting to secure a lurative remote job before I do.
Seriously considering full time ministry, just not sure I have the calling and don't want to be a liability to the church.

My advise, don't give up, keep applying and also be sensitive to business opportunities too. All the best.

I feel your frustration. That's the same reason I've been sceptical about taking tech courses. I'll only enrol for one if I'm sure of relocating. I got a degree in Mathematics/Computer Scinece but I can confirm the guys that bagged Science Degrees from my school that are practicing what they read and are balling are the Engineering and Architecture guys. Most of the IT guys despite all their certifications are struggling. I'm shelfing my IT Certification plans for a PG in Finance so I can make significant progress.

Get your IT certifications first, especially the ones that have some bearing with Finance and then go into Finance or you combine them. You will have good prospects if you go into Finance with a strong IT background and certifications

You should have gone to invest in earning a trade and not to code.

Other than the most senior expertise 0.0000001% of programmers, every Tech job now is obsolete owing to AI.

I asked the DeepSeek and AI Chatgpt to write me a simple line code in JAVA that I can compare Amazon in-store prices across multiple vendors for a particular product and return the monthly sale figures plus the demographics of the average buyer from personal data gathered from Google and Microsoft. I also asked deep seek to write additional code seeking average credit score and monthly earnings .

It worked perfectly .

Truth is I guessed this would enter fp.

IT skillset is a good one to have.

I was reviewing one from a former crush on FB earlier hours of today.

#data analytics

Truth is...it's a mindset thingy and was impressed by her resolve despite the daunting experience to be data analytics certified.

Anyone who is good, does not beg for tech job. This year alone, I have made over 5k dollars on coding gigs. That is just between January to this February.
Starting another coding gig for 7k dollars in few weeks time.
What most people don't know is the IT market requires one to be really solid and good.
Building sophisticated applications no be beans. And no be wetin AI dey run.

It is hard because you most likely learned the elementary things and then you want to get a job abroad. Don't you know that everyone in Africa, Asia, South America, and most of Europe wants that remote job you also want? If four candidates from Africa, Asia, South America, and Europe apply for the same remote job and have the same credentials, don't you realize the African is least likely to get it? To get the job, you have to go beyond the bare minimum.

To use OP's data analysis example, being an average data cleaner and dashboard creator is no longer enough. You have to know Python and be good at statistical analysis.

Even at that, the competition is still so tough. The idea that remote jobs will fall into your laps is wrong. It's competitive everywhere.

Thanks

I am also in the same boat as well. I started my tech journey as an IT Engineer and later Systems about 7 years ago. I relocated to the UK under a COS but the job I got through this COS is a finance role. I have done numerous certifications in a bid to land a remote tech job and its been nothing rejection for the past 3 years in UK. I suddenly gave up and decided to be A gigolo.

I really pity the coming generation because AI is going to render millions unemployed. Not long ago, many Nigerians were earning hundreds to thousands of dollars monthly working remotely in platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, today it's almost entirely gone! It's same story of woes in several other sectors except those in health.

Almost every sector is becoming oversaturated with applicants with only few openings. It's a global problem now and people should be careful before enrolling to study just any course in the university.

Stop all this capping abeg. It is in abroad that you get the job based on merit.

Truth is they're few tech jobs out there, but the hype was much and alot of people like you blindly learnt tech skills, now applicants are more than the actual available tech jobs, goto remote work websites and see the thousands of people applying to one tech job, all over the world, it's crazy, now most tech jobs also exclude Africa, they reserve it for Europe and north America, the few available worldwide are crowded by hungry people especially Indians, they're practically everywhere like a pandemic, forget the dreams abeg, na only crypto and surveys be the sure thing now, atleast nobody go control wether I earn or not, it's all up to me, and before you rant, I was like you, I learnt UI and UX design, web design, and graphics design yet here I am, if no be survey and crypto my own for don finish.

Great piece, Mr. MT.

I think finance is the main motivation behind most people presently venturing, or wanting to venture into tech. Reason why we keep hearing about the desire of most, to "make it big" in the tech industry.

Not necessarily because they have the innate desire, requisite skills & relevant experience to solve problems & create value in the field, but because they are looking for a big break financially. Given the current state of things, I can't really blame them much.

I've got some questions I'd like to ask you, regarding tech within our current clime. Is there a way I can reach out to you privately, please? Perhaps on WhatsApp?

You have not been paying attention. 125,000 job loss in Tech in 2024. In 2025, META has laid off workers. Amazon and Google may do likewise. With Ai, the need for tech folks may actually diminish. So you need to add more skills to your CV and be able and willing to do more...remote work is also hard to get anymore.

Tech jobs are over rated in Nigeria. A country that can't boost of year round electricity supply can't be talking about tech.
Go outside Nigeria you will enjoy tech jobs.
If you see how AI is revolutionizing businesses in Asian countries like China,Japan,Korea and across Europe you will know better.
You are expressing this frustration cos you are still in Nigeria.

IT guys across the west dey ball big time.ask anyone close to you that lives abroad.

I met a guy at phone repair arena sometime last year. The guy brought a top notch Samsung phone for minor troubleshooting.(Just unlocking and restore)
He signed in and gave the guys in the repair dept the phone after telling them what the problem was.just to use an OEM software to unlock the phone then do factory restore.
The only solution the so called IT guys adopted was to flash the phone erasing all the vital files and information in the phone without telling the owner.

Meanwhile,The guy told me that he mistakenly locked the phone and it could not boot.He was in dubai then so he went to a repair outlet. He signed in at the outlet.
The guys simply plugged the phone to a device and in less than a minute the phone was unlocked and all factory settings restored without loosing a single file. All personal and phone files were intact. He took his phone, signed out and left.

It was the same thing that happened while in naiJa unfortunately our NaiJa backyard IT guys flash craze comot for d phone head grin grin
No be small matter that day oo

Tech guys are not balling big time abroad. They tend to live in cities where the cost of living has jumped such that they end up paying $2.5k a month to live in a simple 1 bedroom apartment, assuming they want to live in a part of town that has decent transport links and isn't overrun with crime and homelessness.

Add to that the tech companies have been scaling back on jobs over the past two years and the banks who might have absorbed some of that excess are also cutting back and you end up with a deluge of qualified labor.
