Nigerian telecommunications companies have submitted a proposed 100 per cent increase in their tariffs to the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).

During an interview with Arise TV on Thursday, the Chief Executive Officer of MTN Nigeria, Karl Toriola, stated that the increase is to address rising operational costs, including inflation and increased service delivery expenses.

Toriola, however, expressed uncertainty about the proposal being approved by telecom regulator NCC.

He said the hike became imperative to sustain the industry bedevilled by significant financial pressures due to rising operational costs.

“We’ve put forward requests of approximately 100 per cent tariff increases to regulators.

“I doubt they’re going to approve that quantum of increases because they are very, very sensitive to the current economic situation in the country,”
Toriola stated.

“I believe we’re all on the same side, the policymakers, the regulators, our Chairman of ALTON, Gbenga Adebayo, and the industry.

“We’re united because we share concerns about a few fundamental issues. First, human rights, are critical to driving any economy.

“Without a sustainable industry, the broader economy and the well-being of the people will be negatively impacted,”
he added.

Who does this news claim is sensitive to the economic situation of the country?

The tariff is already too expensive, even more expensive than when Nigerians were billed per minute and booster card was in use.

Soon, some people will begin to brag on social media for being able to make phone calls in Nigeria. E be like say we go go back to posting letters and using smoke to send messages. Or, using ravens as was done in Game of Thrones. But ravens can be shot down. Are ravens even available?

The energy being used to advocate for LGBTQ should have been used to advocate for free internet connection to be made a universal human right.

If they try it I'll just switch to starlink. Cos mtn and airtel are just crappy network which I'm managing because it's cheap and affordable. Early this month I recharged my airtel router, and the network has been going on and off. I can't even use it to work. That of mtn isn't even better. You keep wasting your money without getting any value for your money spent.

Anything that makes the price of their internet bundle start rubbing shoulderes with that of starlink, I'm ditching them for good.

Welcome to Neoliberalism. Service delivery from the Telcos is very poor yet they want to increase tariff to 100%. Apart from MTN which other Telco deserve this increase?

We can't blame them at all. It is the situation of things in the country. They are the only ones that haven't increased their rates. The rest of us have increased our rates in our various businesses. Na only them haven't so it is understable

I'm sure the ediot handling that ministry will approve it.

Telecoms want to return to era where they make ridiculous profits with little to no investments in the sector.

Their networks after more than 2 decades of operation is still shit. Yet they want to increase tariffs because the profit they made last year is not enough like it used to be.

Lol....it's gonno surprise people how all these organising and national bodies will go all out to increase their tariffs and services on the masses cus they have seen that no matter what, Nigerians instead of going all out to protest , are very docile people and easy to adjust and endure while in the face of hardship.......This is a fact!.....

100% is small they should jack it up to 250%. One pack of spaghetti and a bottle of oil will do the magic. Nigerians will understand

Omo,

All these that used to complain that people don't check on them.... With this proposed tariff increase.... Some people will only load their phone to call people that will help their life.

If you kiss someone, visit them and time with them.

Because gradually, we will start writing letters and making use of our mailbox...

Coz 100% increase no be anybody's mate😊😊😊

I won't blame them, the operating cost coupled with forex loss is dealing with them seriously.
How many times has government increase fuel price, yet regulator don't want them to increase tarrif.
I will suggest they should allow them to do the pricing, consumer will go for the one that suit them
