I woke up to hear my phone bleep, and when I scrolled through the message, I shook my head in disbelief. How far will these loan apps go? Attached is a screenshot of the message. To the commenter below, the message was sent to my phone and probably to others as well to defame the loan defaulter. I can't even recall where I met the person at the center of this mess, but she sure had my saved on her phone.

My prayer for you is that God will bless the work of your hands and fortune will smile on you so that you'll not have reasons to ever borrow from Loan sharks again...

Those people have no joy when they wanna recover their funds.

Sometimes it is hard to blame these people as it is the kind of environment prevalent in Nigeria. Over 95% of the average Nigerian borrow with intentions not to repay and these people are into business to make money.

I honestly do not blame these loan companies as they have to resort to whatever means to stay in business.

So after this, will she still pay the loan...

This defamation has an opposite effect. If the defaulter was having issues or doubts on repaying her loan before, having seen this degrading message, she will never repay.

These loan apps better find creative ways of recovering their money because I believe currently, many Nigerians are so broke (and shameless) that such messages mean nothing to them.

most people blame loan sharks, but why will someone borrow and refuse to pay back
make we dey tell ourselves truth ,
if the borrower had paid back , the lender will have no course to complain,
most of these borrowers are evil and wicked. the main motive is not to return the money
,
as u see me so, I hate borrowing money

I am currently owing
1. Okash
2. Branch
3. New credit
4. Xcross cash
5. Fairmoney

And they are all due... Not that I am not making efforts to pay them back, I am...

The country is too hard...

Though for now I only receive calls and constant reminders from anyone of them, that if I don't pay they will report my bvn to credit bureau... Sometimes branch and Fairmoney will tell me they will take legal action...

None of my s have called me yet to report any form of defamation yet...

I just hope and believe that these five loan apps I am owing are part of the ones that done defame... God go help me out to pay them all...

These types of loan apps are usually rubbish. They're not ed with CBN.

A ed loan app such as opay, etc won't do this rûbbish

So after this do you expect to get back your money, because you will be sued for deformation and not that your small money she borrowed

These loan apps should be avoided at all cost cos they've done more harm than good. Better to borrow money from family and friends than to use loan apps.

They are always tarnishing people's image once the person fails to pay back on the stipulated date. Even if the person is on the hospital bed, they don't care. Very callous set of people.

They should actually be banned cos those loans are just being used to exploit Nigerians. High interest rate, short repayment period... CBN isn't doing its job cos these people have violated a lot of ethical banking codes...

Nigeria is a lawless country that's why these loan companies behave however they like.

In saner climes, such companies would run down due to the kind of law suit they'll receive from the public.

The best is to stay away from them. Cos loan sharks can't give you any tangible money to use to your business. It's always peanuts with high interest rates.

I read one thread around last year where the op was lamenting how he was given 5k to pay back 8k after 6 days. And when he couldn't pay back, they started sending defaming messages to his s because of it. What can 5k solve in this economy? That money might not even last a day before you exhaust it. Just stay away from them.

There was a time I needed urgent 20k to sort out an emergency but I had about 15k . This loan app loaned me 1.5k just for seven days with interest rate of about 70% . They threatened to call and message all my numbers and tarnish my image on the particular date the loan was to expire .

Also , several strange numbers have been spamming my number and WhatsApp with loan offers since then .

I understand their loan has no collateral but other means of collection should be deployed . Like registration with CBN ,since they collect BVN before loan approval,CBN can authorise deduction from any bank the BVN is linked to .

Consumer right is important in business .

The truth is 90% of Nigerians borrow money without the intention of paying back...

The lenders themselves are not without faults either, why would you charge exorbitant interest rates?

Ringstonermask:
where ona dey get statistics from ?

From research and observations, e.g read the comments from this thread, you will see for yourself.

Most western world citizens have credit cards...credit system is part of the international banking system.
These Igbo àfia guys also take items on credits...to pay up later...infact, multinational corporations make you supply products to them on credit...and only pay after 30-45days.

These fintech loan apps should all sit together and find a way around loan defaults.
Once you defame, that's the end of the money.

Bring your interest low...and let customers sign a mandate authorising CBN to deduct the debts from any linked to your BVN.
