Good morning Nairalands

After my never ending fuel gulping battle with my Toyota Camry, I later ended up buying a 2012 Toyota Corolla.

I went with my mechanic to a car stand to get it, when we got there we saw different kinds/types of corolla. My mechanic told me some are 1.8l engine while others are 2.0l and a lot of the corolla uses venza engine.

I wanted to buy any of the corolla of 1.8L engine but my mechanic told me that they're old model, that I should get a recent corolla with Venza engine, but I refused when I heard the word "venza engine"

I told my mechanic that over my dead body will I jump from frying pan to fire, from Camry to Venza. I said so because since the corolla is using Venza engine, it'd surely gulp up fuel like Venza, which would be a lot worst than a camry.

But my mechanic assured me that what I said is very false, that it won't. That a corolla is a corolla and corollas doesn't eat fuel.

His words really calmed me down and I bought the 2012 corolla.

So I bought 8k fuel to test the fuel usage and see how long it'd last, I know I should have bought more, but I needed to get a faster result.

Well, it turns out that my mechanic tricked me and I'm in so much pains right now, my 8k fuel only went for 31km before the fuel got exhausted, I later realized that I was very much right and shouldn't have listened to my mechanic that a corolla is a corolla, venza engine or small 1.8L engine.

From my observation, it seems the 2012 corolla is gulping up fuel like a venza. Yesterday, I took it to a mechanic and asked them to fix anything that'd make the car to gulp up fuel, they changed the plugs, cleaned the filter, I will be testing it today with another 8k fuel, I pray and I hope that it won't be as bad as it was yesterday, because I'm so depressed right now, after what my camry did to me which made me went for a corolla, now I'm having same issue with my corolla. I'm really so down right now.
no corrola uses venza engine.

The 4 litre venze uses Camry's 2.5 or 2.4 litre engines and it gulps fuel due to the size of the car.

The V6 venzas use the same engine with a v Camry as well..

Corrolas use a smaller 1.8 litre or 2.0 litre engine and these engines are not installed in any venza.

Your mechanic is either a quack or a thief.

Very ok at the current price of fuel.
Well I don’t really know about corollas but even in this present dispensation @1100/ltr my Kia-rio 2013model covers minimum of 80km+ with 5k fuel. I live in kubwa and work in area 1, to and from my office covers over about 70km. Before now, @660 I was sure of at least going to work twice on 5k. Despite the fact that my engine have being ringed before. That car is indeed a savior in this economy.

Did you also include Catalyst after changing sensors? Or just sensors

highchief1:
my matrix almost killed me before I attended to it.car was consuming fuel more than a tundra. All I did was change the exhaust sensor and that’s it.the two cost me 30k.Car is so efficient now.

It has extremely dark soot, very dark.
Where can I locate the thermostat in a car?
That's the problem. In this Tinubu economy people are still removing thermostats from cars. Just take the car to a good mechanic and ask to put new thermostat. Watch them..

Tankio. No Venza engine can fit into a corolla 1ZZ engine compartment. Too many Naija quack mechanics are sucking car owners dry.

You can check fuel economy on https://www.fueleconomy.gov/

This is what the scanner man told me needs to be changed, my mechanic has gotten price from the seller and it's 93,000 naira, we're going to get it today. I'm going with him so I will confirm it myself at the shop, if it's truly 93,000.
Oga, some codes are thrown because something is faulty somewhere. It might not necessarily be the damaged part. You don't want to change parts and still end up with same problems?

It's venza engine sir, 100% venza engine.
You’re 100% incorrect. Venza engines dont fit into corolla engine compartment. 1.8l engine vs 2.7l engine no be mate

Did you check if the catalyst is intact?

Don't take hasty decision, I suggest you scan the car and check if the following sensors are working optimally
For a car to be fuel efficient the following should be working
All Oxygen sensors
Mass air flow sensors
Knock sensor and crankshaft sensor
Engine Thermostat
Clean air filter
Fuel pump filter
And lastly the pressure of your TYRES
Also put into consideration your speed and AC usage at the time you are driving.
I hope this helps

First, you should understand that every engine is identified by model number. Not street Mechanic slangs like Venza Engine. Use your car VIN to get detail of your car including engine model and trim online. That will also tell you if the engine has been swapped out, by crosschecking the physical engine.

2. Stop getting mechanics to fiddle with your car, yo will end up with badly tuned car.

3. Nothing wrong with your bank 1(front) and bank 2 (back) oxygen sensors. If your catalyst is missing, engine ECU or computer will be seeing it as faulty bank 2 oxygen sensor. This affects how much fuel your injector sprays into the engine. Infact, most mechanics will even cut the wires to bank 2 oxygen sensors once the catalyst is removed, leaving you ECU running in default setting.

There are several tables or guides stored in your ECU computer which tells it how much fuel to use based on reports from rear O2 sensor. Whenever it is not seeing sensible report from this sensor it assumes something is wrong and uses a default table which will run the engine in an inefficient fuel rich mode, but with enough power such that you may assume nothing is wrong. It's like operating your car with carburettors, and loosing the efficency brought by computer controlled injectors. The only way to fix this problem is to replace your catalyst. If you can't, drive the car as it is because the only other way is to re-programmed the ecu with your own tables which will not be efficient and cost way more than a catalyst. Note- that your scanner guy cannot reprogrammed ECUs. Yankee peeps who do sell them as costly custome ECUs on ebay. And it will still require a catalyst.

So go buy a replacement catalyst. No modern car using computer controlled injection and ignition can run fuel efficiently without catalyst, it is just impossible.
To scan your car yourself, buy a Bluetooth ELM 327 OBD2 scanner, the app on your smart phone and scan your car. Some guy based in a plaza in Ikeja Ogba sells it on Jiji.

You're very correct. You have a valid point.

Bros your mechanic is a quack Kazim, better one sef. The bay of a Corolla can not carry a 2.4l engine that the Venza or Camry has. There is simply no space in a Corolla or else its custom fitted by cutting out and welding stuff.

What you bought is a 2.0 Corolla that comes in the Asia, Dubai, South Africa Spec Corolla. Only USA spec doesnt come in 2.0. Take your car to a proper mechanic for diagnosis.

You didn't see where he said if there is?

Nonexisting1:
Venza is V6 and should be 3.5 engine, not 2.0. I'm not sure there is venza with 4 cylinder and even if there is, it should be around 2.5 engine.

And I am letting him there is actually.
So??

I would have bought the catalyst long ago, but some mechanic I have net told me that it doesn't matter on fuel consumption, while some said that it does matters.

Another reason I'm scared is that I don't know how it looks like, I really wish to get the original, but the mechanic and seller must surely combine to cheat me, that's my other fear. If not, I'll ready to get and fix it today.

Sir, is this scanner okay?
So I can place order right away.

Look for ELM 327 scanner

Get your catalyst from a reputable auto parts store with warranty.

Every car buyers believes whatever their mechanics say regarding the car they intend to buy is the final say. But in the end, most of them end up biting their fingers in regret for heeding to their advice...
Same with most Christians who heed to every thing their pastors tell them.

Look into yourself and listen to what's called your gut feelings.
It never fails... Except if you've disconnected from your inner man and need to be dependable on others for guidance

You have been asked to take the picture of the engine a few times. People can really add there opinions.

I met a man today at where I went to fix my car mirror, he made calls and told me the catalyst would be cost 70k

Is it possible for a Belgium catalyst to be that cheap?

This is a road side mechanic talk, I don't mean you are a mechanic, In Toyota Engines, it is differentiated by a number,I4 or V6 and engine capacity
