Living In The Uk-life Of An Immigrant (part 3) (976390 Views)

Resurgent2016: One thing I’m really glad about the pressure on NHS, not the usual noise from the media that it’s the immigrant use of nhs that is causing pressure within the service as they are not the primary cause of strain on the system, rather, other factors such as aging populations, chronic underfunding are more contributors 1 Like |

Hi everyone, I already applied for a dépendant graduate visa and yet to receive a decision. I currently have a COS for skilled work visa. can I vary the application or I have to withdraw the previous one that hasn’t been decided yet (2weeks now)? Student visa expires 29th and COS just came in today. I read on uk website that one can vary but will need to pay the new fees and then get a refund. Also can I apply with WAEC/proof of English as English ability or it’s compulsory to use the ecctis website to evaluate degree from Nigeria? Any advice is welcomed! |

This is rather interesting, having to obtain a letter from primary employer before engaging in supplementary 20 hours work.

Resurgent2016: I see your point and agree with some. There is still good room to go though. The NHS is fabulous but like any free service with an increasingly entitled populace, the expectation will keep rising exponentially. Its the reason why I'm cautious about the cliché of 'investment'. Not because its not needed but because that money has to come from somewhere which is all the more difficult in a slow growing economy. People talk about how UK productivity lags that of the US without factoring in underlying drivers of that. For the first time since the end of the world war, there is real danger that a generation of Brits could be worse off than their predecessors. Many times, the government has turned to immigration to spur growth. But it's now at loggerheads with the populace. The next decade would be interesting to live through. 3 Likes |

Lexusgs430: Hehe... na normal thing... The talk then may be how labour is unable to run an economy. Once a 'usual' face is leader of the torries, the populace would pander to them again. |

Good day all Please I need clarity on 2 issues 1: The £39k needed for COS, is it to be earned by one person or the family together (husband and wife). There was an argument today where I was so I want to be sure 2: If a fresh graduate gets a job that pays about £31k, would the person be eligible for COS? Considering the fact that the amount isn't up to the new UK govt threshold but it's up to the new graduate threshold Thanks |
AgentXxx(m): 4:35pm On May 28, 2024 |
1) The 39k must be earned by one person. 2) Yes Paxziano: |

ehizario2012: It appears optional not mandatory. Overall, I dont see much between this and the previous guidance on taking up extra work. Its still 20hrs and limited to select roles. I wonder if UKVI knows how many hours of supplementary work folks do without asking HMRC (with consent) as I've heard about a good number of folks who exceeded the 20hr treshold quite a few times got their ILR smoothly. I can't recollect coming across anyone on a work visa (not students) who didn't get ILR cos they exceeded the limit. Obviously, things might change in future. |

Not UK related but definitely similar from the topics i see in this group as it is for a different country. So apologies to derail a bit. I and my gf are not planning on getting married yet officially but in 2026 we will. However I need to provide one of the below requirements so we can move from uk to another country. One of the following: -A photocopy of your common law certificate -A notarised affidavit from you confirming that you and your spouse are in a common-law relationship under your home country’s laws -Letter .from the embassy which confirmed that you and your partner are considered to be in a common-law relationship under their law What kind of doc can I provide in this regard that says common law relationship. |

jedisco: There is a HUGE difference. The previous shortage occupation list contained 48 roles or so in total IIRC, and now that has been extended to being able to take on jobs in close to 600 SOC codes covering thousands of job types. Before, if you were sponsored, say as an ant, you would be hard-pressed to find another ancy job that would allow you work only weekends (since you can't do it during your normal working hours), so your only option was to work one of the shortage jobs which allow weekend-only work, and the most obvious is care work. Now you can be sponsored as an ant and work in everything from IT, retail, building, social media, project management etc as your supplementary job. It's a massive difference and I hope more people become aware so they can maximise the opportunity. 8 Likes |

Yes you read it right. Not sure if you are relying on the refund but even if you withdraw (which I wouldn't advise due to expiry on 29th), refund would take up to 28 days. Graduate visas usually take up to 8 weeks for a decision so will suggest you vary your application as soon as you can and hopefully will get a refund as stated on the guidance. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/vary-your-immigration-application Trendytessy: |

Mamatukwas: Unfortunately, one of the downsides of an anonymous forum. If it was twitter/Facebook /IG etc….its very likely a family member or friend would have given us an update in the event something terrible has happened (God forbid). A bit unsettling to think about. It is well. 1 Like |

Schoolhike: Pressure on the NHS comes from it having to cater for a larger population than it was planned for, which is due to increased life expectancies as well as immigration. All the focus is always on the NHS but the bigger ticking time bomb is actually the growing unaffordability of pensions, not just in the UK but in the west. Neither party has a detailed strategy to address this issue e.g. by tweaking the triple lock, so as not to alienate older voters; however pensions are a huge and growing cost to the state. The pension age is already 66 and is set to rise even higher - soon the expectation will be to work well into your 70s and then what? |

Mamatukwas: We should be ashamed of ourselves if this is the likes of facebook, twitter, WhatsApp, LinkedIn etc. Don't juxtapose them. The much anyone can do in a faceless forum is to shout out or send a dm, which really has little to no impact. Justwise is quite known (anonymously) and that's it. Chitty-chattying doesn't really mean we know ourselves personally. Even if you feel you know someone, you don't really know them enough to be privy to certain info. We can only but hope he's alright wherever he may be. 1 Like |

missjekyll: thanks for the reply. Is @ the bolded not what the shortage occupations list, global talent visa and related visas are there for? I havent seen or heard anyone who met the criteria denied visas. Has the present government blocked immigration of any sorts? 1 Like |

deept: Exactly! The country needs scientists and engineers: the govt introduced HSMP visa which metamorphosed into Global Talent Visa. The country need(ed) Care Workers: A care worker visa was introduced (with care worker CoS subsequently sold on eBay & Temu @ Harrods prices. The country needed Tech talent: Global talent (Technation) Visa was introduced. The country needed Nurses: The NHS agents & recruiters set up tents in Abuja & Manilla & imported hundreds, nay, tens of thousands of Nurses from Phils & Naija … The country needed masons & bricklayers: These were added to the shortage occupation list. The country needed fresh graduates, they reintroduced 2 year post study visa. The country needed Teachers in STEM subjects: They opened up a route. The country needed medical doctors: We now all hear & know about PLAB 1, PLAB 2. An NHS trust/GP practice is never complete if there is no Dr Patel or Dr Singh or Dr Oluwole or Dr Ademola or Dr Gurung or Dr Thapa or Dr Rajakpase or Dr Ganeshwaran. I think the country has tried, and is trying. 5 Likes |

ReesheesuKnack: To reply to Tech Nation, Graduate visa and the engineers you talk about. I know a few rising tech stars from Naija wey don japa come dey live slightly quieter here. Many graduates MSc. and PhD that won't be employed in professional roles because of the graduate visa. Engineers, even person wey been dey work with shell for Naija dey manage warehouse work for here now. Omo, from my small experience here so far, so much more can be gotten from talented immigrants if anyone is willing to take a chance on them. 1 Like |
