A brother of mine graduated with a 2:2 in Bsc and 4.11 gp in Msc Engineering. What are the chances of Phd scholarship in US?

Don't be discouraged. Just make your profile to be competitive. However, don't let people tell you that it is either STEM or first class. Rather, it is how best you can project your profile and fit for the school. That is where your extensive research comes in. You must comb for as many schools as possible ( I am not kidding). I have 2 siblings who fell for this STEM and First class misinformation but did not even get ission not to talk of scholarships until I format their brains. First class in Mathematics and Economics. Your SOP is the game changer. Don't get me wrong, your grade must be good but it won't just earn you ission based on that except you can bring it to perspective. SOP is what brings every aspect of your applications together. You must understand how to make sense of your transcript. They won't do it for you. The more relevant courses you can bring together to prove your case, the better.

What about his research experience? Let him include research experience even if it is just internship.

If you can raise 40 million naira, why travel abroad? Use your 40 million naira to hustle your way to the top. With God on your side very achievable.

Why most people for naija never blow is simply because there's no seed capital.

If you have a seed capital like 5 to 10 million as a graduate. Just start business forget about going abroad.

Nigeria is still a virgin land so many things to explore unlike abroad.

Things like what

Again, it depends on one's work experience in Nigeria, GMAT scores and how robust the funding is. Also, the calibre of the university matters. Every STEM gets it, provided the source of funding is robust. I recall a lass I met during NYSC who went for one Design kini kon program which resembles a branch of civil engineering. She was sponsored by a top university based on her projects and undergraduate degree. In fact, those general STEM courses are the ones which get the visas rather than Space Engineering and Robotics. How many universities in Nigeria offer Astronomy? Robotics? AI? Even getting ission would be hard as one is competing against Chinese, Indians, and American residents, who have more opportunities to intern and practice those disciplines before grad school. I know the kind profiles wey I read for reddit/Gradission. Our computer science grads have it tough, let alone AI kini kon.

You have said it all. Lots of people don’t understand this.
Someone who didn’t attend any of the Ivy Colleges in Nigeria or didn’t go on any international vacation or excursions nkw wants to study in the US.
The consular already knows such person dey try to japa. The person come wan go study . Haaaa.

Are you sure people are still getting US visa these days? Out of like 10,000 people that show up at the US embassy every week, only about 100 probably get issued. If you have been at their Lagos consulate before, you’ll understand what I’m saying

It’s really tough, my brother. That’s why I said it’s the under 18 prospective students that usually get it.
Most of them would have finished at any of those high-end secondary schools in Nigeria. They would have had travel experiences etc.

US visa is getting really hard to get. They should tell us if their government no wan give us visa again make we find somewhere else. You go hustle pay almost 1M in visa fee and SEVIS fee, yet they go deny u in 30seconds for Walter Carrington embassy Lagos

We need to have a round-table discussion with their consular.

You only need GRE fee, TOEFL fee, WES fee, SEVIS fee, visa application fee and flight ticket. Aside the UK, most countries' universities' offer scholarships, and as you stated, they are competitive. Why shouldn't they be? Everyone loves good things, and good things don't come easy or cheap. Yu must work hard for them. In order to compete, you need to have a competitive profile. I would outline the profile of folks I know one-on-one and from a distance:

- First class in Biotechnology from a private university and MSc from a federal university in the south east who is pursuing his PhD in the US. Source of funding: Graduate Fellowship (very competitive form of sponsorship by US' universities).
- First class in Biotechnology from a federal university who pursues his graduate studies in the US. His first class was even celebrated on the front page sef.
- First class in Chemistry from a federal university, and I think should be done with his PhD in the US. Prior to leaving Nigeria, he taught GRE/GMAT to job seekers in Nigeria.
- First class in Petrochemical engineering from a state university now in Canada pursuing his MSc, and as we discussed would move to the US for his PhD. He was a math teacher prior to leaving Nigeria.

While all are first class (including others too numerous to mention), there are also those with 2.1 who get scholarship to study abroad. I know one who did and would complete his PhD this year. I know another in who we communicated via Nairaland and should be done with his PhD sef. Had a 4.33 in Chemistry from a state university. Myself, I had a 2.1 and got scholarships when I arrived. My parents said either I get scholarships as 25 million would not be spent even though they had/have it. No be only me dem born.

To secure these scholarships, your profile must be competitive, as ission into grad school is very competitive. I thought competition would have reduced as Chinese students shy away from the US, but Indians don cover the gap. First class graduates are more likely to be sponsored because foreign universities judge us mainly based on our grades before other factors compared to how they would assess Americans, Europeans or Chinese. A Chinese grad with 2.1. from Fudan University has little to exhibit compared to a 2.1. from UNIBEN. To compete favourably against that Fudan grad, it is better to possess a first class.
Please can you give more insight into this.

Won't it be difficult to cope?
It won't make sense to get poor grades just cos I went to study what ed my power

It won't, education and learning here are different and resources are abound everywhere for you to exploit.
It's just my opinion, and it's out of my personal experience . Just research well so that you don't end up wasting your scarce resources. Special skills are required here not like those regular courses, don't get me wrong it all depends on you,am not here to scare or advise you wrongly

Nigeria is not favourable why?
1. Insecurity
2. Village people
3. Competition in business and not everyone is business oriented.
4. Nigerian economy fluctuation

I travelled to Russia by applying to a school that only accepts payment on arrival. That way all I had to do was send my documents, they sent my visa invite, I went to the embassy, got my visa (proof of funds not needed for Russia) booked my flight (280k to Moscow as of two years ago) and came to Russia. You can reach out. Will gladly offer more info. Russia is beautiful and the people are nice towards foreigners.

An important information is missing from my post so let me say it here. I already have B. Sc in a mgt science course. I'm looking to do M. Sc.

I think this puts me in an even more complex situation. Does your advice still hold? i.e doing Masters in those above courses(sounds somehow based on my background).

No it doesn't, you can go for MSc in information management, data science for example, but like I said my opinion is mine you can do more research on your own ,so that you don't end up as surplus, as the market is already Saturated.
Things are changing, more technology is being deployed for ease of doing business from soft to hard work For example traditionally 2 or more people are employed to drive a semi truck which is referred to as trailer in Naija, but here in the state it's 1 one person from start to finish, verse majority of the jobs available depends largely on technology and now AI is taking over the job market and you will be coming to compete with people who's have experience and education here in the state, In essence you need more than enough preparation to break into the market but not impossible, if I can do it you too can do it

Understood Sir, thank you!

But do you have an idea of what a competitive profile should be? Considering I'm going for Masters.
I understand I'll need to research but your input is just as valuable. And I may not get the chance to ask questions like I'm doing now.
