The Federal Government has announced its plan to reform the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to make it a revenue-generating agency.

The Minister of Youth Development, Jamila Bio-Ibrahim, disclosed this while speaking on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics programme.

Asked if there were immediate plans to increase the monthly allowance of corps , the minister said the Federal Government was working on reforming the NYSC scheme to reflect the present realities of the nation.


“We all understand that resources are dwindling, even oil revenues are not as they used to be but we will find innovative ways of ensuring that corps ’ welfare is well-taken care of.

“When it comes to remuneration and looking totally at the holistic funding of the NYSC, we have announced a reform of the NYSC scheme itself. So, we want the scheme to go beyond that social programme of government to be that revenue-generating scheme and agency.

“The reforms which transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare the corps for the job market and to be decently and gainfully employed or to be employers of labour through entrepreneurship and of course, perfect matching into primary assignment and all the they need in that career path.”


She also disclosed that corps were no longer posted to states deemed unsafe in the wake of worsening security conditions in the country.


“As an immediate intervention of the government and the NYSC as an agency, we have actually stopped posting corps to the very unsafe states.

Long overdue they got these children to work, if you don’t want to do farm work, teaching, medicare, construction & engineering, or serve society don’t graduate from university.

In other countries with similar schemes like The NYSC, it is a 1 or 2 years compulsory military program.

In as much the northern people pay their taxes just like us we don't have any problem.

The quickest way to generate revenue from NYSC is to SCRAP it.

It's a total money pit.

The cost of feeding THOUSANDS of people for 3 weeks alone is ASTRONOMICAL. Multiply that by the number of streams in a year then include the padded parts that are embezzled and you'll quickly realize the cost is UNGODLY.

Add in a personnel costs and the 33k/month allowance and you'd see it's an UNSUSTAINABLE and ABSOLUTE waste of money.

SCRAP NYSC and it'll automatically become a revenue-generating agency due to money saved.

Advice from a concerned citizen, Nigeria should start a store chain across the country, and in these stores only Nigerian made goods should be sold, the quality might be less than imported goods, but the idea is to buy Nigerian and improve our production sector, Goods should be sold at retail quantity to end-s only, these should range from shoes made in Aba to semovita from corn grown in katsina, to other processed food sourced from other parts of the countries. Every state in Nigeria produces something thats nationally purchased.
Government should only create accommodating conditions and local producers. Everything produced in Nigeria should be studied and improved upon to replace and established foreign counterparts. Wheat substitute bread, locally textiled clothes,Local bathing soap,toothpaste, We should maximise producing everything in Nigeria. People earning "Nigerian" salaries should be able to procure locally made goods.

I also think we need to secure the "naira" a little bit more, i wont be surprised, people who looted billions on Buhari's exit are still changing that money to dollars. At this point your government doesn't know the amount of naira in circulation or amount of dollars in Nigeria.
Fix the Nigerian stock exchange, sanitize it, we have many Nigerians that went to Harvard and Wharton, who are very qualified. Give the looters somewhere to store their "stolen" wealth, so as not to cause these naira/dollar tsunami volatility.

Fresh graduates will gladly do these jobs you mentioned but would the FG give them a pay commensurable to the job and realities of life? Plus what then happenssl after their 1 yr service? Will the FG give them loans to start on their own? Hell no
