The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero said most governors of the 37-Member Tripartite Committee On Minimum Wage are not complying with the proposed base pay structure.

Ajaero stated this in an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Tuesday.

Recall that Vice President Kashim Shettima had inaugurated the committee in Abuja earlier on Tuesday, saying the decision was aimed at ensuring a decent living wage and in compliance with the existing National Minimum Wage Act of 2019 which will expire in a few months from now.

He said said, ”Most of the governors in the minimum wage committee are those who are not paying minimum wage or paying them in breaches.”

”The governors who are in full compliance with the minimum wage are not adequately represented, so whatever made the Federal Government bring in those who are not compliant or compliant in breaches to form the bulk of the hip of the minimum wage committee from the state government that will unfold with time,”
he added.

The House of Representatives’ move to amend the National Minimum Wage Act in 2017 for a compulsory review of workers’ remuneration every five years led to the Minimum Wage Act of 2019 signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari.

When sked to name certain states that have failed to implement the minimum wage, Ajaero said, “A state like Zamfara, I don’t know how much Borno and Bauchi are paying, there is a minimum wage law which criminalises the non-compliance of the minimum wage.”

”And the Nigerian state has not tried to enforce these laws, others are just enforcing them in breaches. Take Anambra State for instance, Anambra State pays N30,000 for the least paid. I challenge anybody from Anambra to prove that even a permanent secretary is earning up to N170,000 or N180,000,” he said.

The NLC president still speaking on economic matters as they relate to the country’s dependence on the dollar as its means of transaction said the Federal Government has turned a blind eye to it.

”The issue of the dollarization of the currency is clear and the FG is not doing anything about it.”

He also revealed that the Labour Congress is helpless in solving the issue as this is a policy of the federal government.

Why workers can’t have living wage —NECA
”We are worried about it but there is nothing we can do since the Nigerian government has chosen the dollar as a formal currency that will benchmark all they are doing.,” he said.

We went from importing petrol and subsidizing to Nigerians at low prices to Dangote buying the raw material to make petrol at 1500naira to a dollar. Petrol is about to get more expensive than now.

Name The states and the Governors.

Loud the speaker.

Pitch the Governors against their performing counterparts.......They want second term. They must pay reviewed minimum wage.

Governors are the real demons of Nigeria.

Seunpapa65:
Chop I chop government

This government is nothing close to a "chop I chop" government.

In a real chop I chop government like Sylva did when he was governor of Bayelsa state, the leaders steal their money but the people still get crumbs that fall of the table. But currently, we no dey even ive the aroma of the food, talk more of chopping it.

Joe Ajaero dey voice say dem wan run am street.

Nigerians are only ready for the betterment of the country when they start pressuring their governors to be transparent and able. The governors receive massive security votes from the FG, even more during this current istration, after the subsidy removal. But everyone would rather face the FG while forgetting their shares from the usual fuel subsidy are now in the hands of their state governors.

For context, Tinubu government now pays 2-3 times more FAAC to the state and local governments compared to previous istrations. The increments are yields from the subsidy removal. So, why tf can't state governments increase their minimum wages?

How can we have 36 states and only 2-3 are working? Lol. Since everyone has the liberty to run to Lagos to hustle the daily bread, let's keep deceiving ourselves.

Gosh! We are only smart on paper!

This statement coming from the NLC President may be laced with facts but it sets the newly inaugurated committee on a conflict course that may hinder smooth takeoff. Looking at it from another perspective, it's even good having majority of the defaulting governors in the committee as their refusal to implement agreed minimum wage (which they themselves represented their zones and arrived at the wage benchmark), it will be at least a shameful reference.

Nigeria's budget is in dollars, they usually peg it to dollars. They sell crude oil in dollars...

WHY IS THE SALARIES NOT PEGGED TO DOLLARS?

Why does salary not change with inflation?

Minimum wage is not supposed to be less than 200k in this EVIL economy.

This country needs to be seized from this useless, wasteful generation of wicked old fools.
The old generation 65-85 years people have failed this country.

From people like yahya Bello to Ọbasanjọ to Buhari, ibb etc

NLC is fighting it wrongly.

Please, if you can get to the president, tell him to leave this kind of strategy aside. It is not working. NLC needs to get their lawyers ready and face Yakubu. We must implement BVAS and direct the transmission of votes to the INEC server from the polling stations.

Govt is not ready to do it cos this is power for the people; hence, NLC should take it up. This is the tool NLC will use to fight the government. When governors know that the day of reckoning is coming, why won't they listen to us? The Senate must be forced to put it into law. This is where NLC should go on strike. Go on strike until the Senate stamps it into law. Then, you have the power.

It's better, let's see how they won't agree on time and people will start complaining hence mounting pressure on the Presidency to do the needful.

Interesting Parts:

”Most of the governors in the minimum wage committee are those who are not paying minimum wage or paying them in breaches.”

One word for Governance in Nigeria? INSINCERITY

"Anambra State pays N30,000 for the least paid. I challenge anybody from Anambra to prove that even a permanent secretary is earning up to N170,000 or N180,000,”

No wonder the Mr Man was able to save so much for impossible presidential attempt. Is this what we would have faced? Nigerians dodged bullet at close range, what an escape!
